JJF - Blondie
Posted by: Wuudy ()
Date: May 20, 2006 22:58

A question:

What does Blondie play during JJF. He is playing a acoustic guitar. Is he playing just the chords of the song or some riff or is he just playing too much ;-)

I was playing with my band today. In the end of the session we were just jamming and i started JJF. We had three people on guitar and it became a bit of a mess. Now because the Stones play it live with three guitars there must be a good way to make it sound goooooood.

Thanks!!!

Cheers,
Wuudy

Basically, if you wanna play Jumping Jack Flash like they play it nowadays, what you need is:

One rhythm guitarist just playing the riff in open G.. one lead guitarist that adds those high notes through the whole song.. the third isn't really neccesary, but if you do, you should indeed take an acoustic and just play the chords.

I guess..

Blondie is completely unnecessary.

I like the sound of the three guitars, Blondies guitar is fine in my opinion. I think the Rio 2006 version just rocks like hell - you can also watch it on the Stones website. Some songs get stronger from tour to tour, some weaker. JJF has grown in my opinion. Also what Darryl plays is just amazing.

Part of the classic Stones sound is having an acoustic guitar humming away somewhere in the mix. On many songs it's audible at little above a subconscious level... but it adds to the swing and texture of the whole groove.

That's very true.

A third guitar is off course not necessary but i agree with Erik and Spud. An acoustic guitar can always give a nice ring to a song!

I do completely agree. 3rd guitar tasks should be fulfilled only by Mick Jagger.
I can take the back-up singers, the keyboards and the horns, but guitars should be left to the guys that have always played them.
When I saw Blondie play acoustics on the Licks Tour I was horrified, seriously.

That's another story. I wouldn't want ANYBODY playing 3rd guitar in the Stones if it's not Mick Jagger, no matter how a good musician he may be.

I don't "get" Blondie. Incredible guitarist or not. It's okay when he's shaking maracas or being out front and playing rhythm along with Satisfaction, but when he's OUT OF VIEW behind Chuck and adding acoustic to It's Only Rock 'n Roll, I take a different view.

Why in the world should the Stones even need Blondie on guitar? This is only a further indication of the deterioration of Keith's and Ron's guitar abilities that they feel that they need a session player on third guitar. If tha is had occured in 1972, harcore fans would have had a fit!

Nothing meant toward you, ryanpow. Blondie sang the song "Sail On Sailor" with the Beach Boys. Maybe he should give Mike Love a call about a job. Let Captain Coconut and Woodsy the Owl play guitar for the Stones.

Blondie really doesn't bother me much, though. Good to have an acoustic on "Satisfaction".

I'm aware of that. I'm just curious as to why he's visible on the stage strumming along to Satisfaction, but hiding away during numbers like, It's Only Rock 'n Roll?

that I DONT know.

I don't care what the originals are with.
If they played Tumblin Dice for almost 20 years with no back-up singers, and as they played JJF and IORR with no acoustico for the same amount of time, why do they need Blondie on guitar?

I feel bad the same way whem I look at the Who with a 2nd guitar player.

I'll confess that I never noticed Blondie’s acoustic during It's Only Rock 'n' Roll 'till Keith arsed up the intro during the Rio show from this year. You could hear the acoustic and it's actually quite prominent during the mix. I forgot about it again 'till I watched the audience-shot Radio City DVD and the camera man zooms in on Blondie sitting down and quite sneakily strumming along to the song behind Chuck. It's so BLATANT that he's not supposed to be visible during this number. I can only presume that the boys perhaps view the song as a BAND moment and that it's not appropriate to have a back up guy out at the front with them. Otherwise maybe they'd have him visible like with Satisfaction.

perhaps the reason he either decides or agrees to stays back is becasue he's humble. HEs there to add a particular dimension of sound to the song, but he doesnt want to share the spot light. I guess that echoes what Big Al says.

i can't believe it - you guys have been to many stones shows, but you don't realize that the Stones hide their backup musicans for the first 4 or 5 numbers of the show . . .

if you cant see them, how do you know they're there?

If a tree falls in the woods with no one around to hear it does it make any noise?

Where is the tyleonol?

Why cant we get a modified 78 lineup back?? Jagger/Richards/Wood/D.Jones/Watts/Leavell Those six would rock the place. And if they want to bring up someone special Bobby Keys can make an appearance. Mick n Keith can do a duet on Night Time.

love the idea, but they don't have the confidence for it.

I dont mind the backup personel they have. The only complaint i have is on the BTB dvd. Lisa walks around too much during the songs. its kind of annoying, except miss you, thats diffeent.

1989 - damn backup singers dancing
1994 - damn backup singers dancing
1997 - damn backup singers dancing
1998 - damn backup singers dancing
1999 - damn backup singers dancing
2002 - damn backup singers dancing
2003 - damn backup singers dancing
2005 - damn backup singers dancing
2006 - damn backup singers dancing
2007 - i'm not holding my breath for any changes.

I can deal with the spectacle of seeing a Stones show but I honestly detest backup singers/backup musicians. I can deal with Bobby Keys and Chuck but I think it'd be alot more fun to see Ronnie and Keith sharing a mike again.

I'd like to see Mick and Keith sharing a mic, but from what I've read on this site it's more likely that I'll see Lisa expose a nipple before that will ever happen. And ryanpow, I saw that dvd, too and know where you're coming from, about Lisa walking around. I liked it, but that's just my opinion. I've always loved Gimme Shelter and Tumbling Dice with Lisa.
