ok, i love LYL. the best stones live album. what a fat sound. but what makes the sound so excellent? does keith use a tele all along, it looks like he played a lot on a gibson.

Any idea?

The total outcome is the result of many parts: not just guitars ans amps, but also the microphones, pre-amps for the mics, the recorder, the mixing desk, the halls they recorded in, the performance etc. And everything in those days was analogue offcourse. I think what's really important is the balance between ambience (the mikes recording the sound in the hall) and close miking (the mikes just a few inches from the amps). I think Ya Ya's and LYL have a nice balance.

They were using a lot of Mesa amps on stage at the time...with a thicker and smoother cascading gain sound than the traditional [now vintage] Fenders used before and after that period.

It was a good tour yes.... but it's not nearly as good as the 72-73 shows.

Mick looked, sounded and acted like the poster boy for coke on this tour. Can't think of another time period where Mick looked so messed up. I think this might have played a part in his bad singing.

that (and 76) was also Keith's Zemaitis-heavy tour of course - at least the photos are full of Keith's Zemaitis ...
but yeah: in addition to the Zemaitis, he had assorted Teles, that pretty dark-red LP Junior and a Travis Bean on at least one occasion.
a nice shot of (among other things) some of the stage gear:

No lip synching.

I love the sound on LYL. It's just great. Listen to Keiths opening riffs on Honky Tonk Woman, or Woodys sound on can't always get...., og both of them on You gotta move.... Splendid!!!

Maybe in isolated moments it sounds good, but the album overall is horribly produced. The overdubs are so apparent, and there's a kind of haze over the whole sound.
