OT(or is it..): Bob Marley
Posted by: Reptile ()
Date: May 11, 2006 15:01

I just saw this on Wikipedia(interessting to see what happens on a day) and read it on our fellow board Stonesforum.nl reported by the almighty Bart. He died of cancer 25 years ago on this day.. a singer, guitarist, songwriter, Rastafarian and activist all in one. Hell, we've got him to thank for reggae music outside of Jamaica. It's not really my style, but still, seeing as Keith and many on this board love it, it's worth remembering him.

As I grew tired of "classic rock" radio (you know, Stairway, Free Bird, Layla, etc.), country became too slick, and the unholy trinity of rap, grunge, and MTV ruined modern music, I got heavily into reggae. I had always thought of it as a background music. When I started playing it loud is when I really got it. Like blues, it is a deep well with many variations. I think Marley is the starting point (and a damn good one) for most. Then one can explore and discover to suit their own taste.

Bob was certainly my entree into Jamaican music.

Rasta don't work for no C.I.A.

Ok, I'm not into Bob or any reggea.. what 10 songs do I HAVE to hear to get into it? If Keith likes it I MUST like it too.

I admire you willingness to try it out - I also agree with your logic (Keith knows best).

Here's 11:

Sun Is Shining
Small Axe
Concrete Jungle
Stay With Me
Burnin' & Lootin'
Rastaman Live Up
Talking Blues
Slave Driver
Put It On
Turn Me Loose
Trenchtown Rock

When possible, go weith the tougher (Perry produced) versions found here:

A few others that I like :

Punky Reggae
Stir It Up
No Woman No Cry
One Love/People Get Ready
On the box set, there's a long medley with Bob on an acoustic that is sonic beauty.

Reptile - You might want to start with "Legend", a hits collection. The first one "Catch A Fire" is very good, too. Like the Stones or the blues, it's hard to name just a few.

Yeah, early Wailers with the Barretts were no joke.
Those performances should be shown to every punk in a bullshit band (famous or not) who thinks they've got it.

10 must songs by Bobba Marley:

No woman No Cry
Kaya
Comin' In From The Cold
Pimpers Paradise
Could You Be Loved
Is This Love
Natural Mystic
Three Little Birds
Soul Almighty
Put It On

A great first step is to get Uprising.
It's easy-listening-reggae mixed up with pop & little rock.

The second time I saw Black Crowes, they played a great version of Pimper's Paradise.

high reptile, high everyone!

irie! The STONES played a cover version of Bob' s and Peter Tosh's

ALL TIME CLASSIC: GET UP - STAND UP

on their ABB tour opening in Canada.
On Keiths homepage you can find some hints to his - ah, what should I call it? - "beeing together" with some rastafarian musicians in Jamaica.

Check out the homepage of the german reggae magazin "riddim.de" which also sold in England.
Greetings! Rock on. yeager

Bouncy and relaxed at the same time, the original.
Nice back and forth changing pace too.

you're right, baboon bro,

this morning I listened to some classic Marley songs like

is this love
could you be loved
three little birds
one love

maybe you remember keith occasionally saying on the stage "one love".

He is a bedrim, which means a brother to the rastas on jamaica.
not my religion, I'm more into indian myths, but in fact all life comes from the same HIGHEST BEEING.

high reptile,and everyone

if you like to discover a new soulfull landscape, reggae could be it, I suppose.

the STONES got a lot of reggae songs, too.

remember "feel on baby" & "cherry oh baby?" on - which album was it?

can't remember, but ... the song is great, especially in this industrialised,

feeling fearing society.
anothe collaboration was mick' s duett with Peter Tosh. a single. Forgotten the title, but I' sure some others can refresh this memory.

Marley is the 2nd greatest "Bob" in the history of popular music

amazed how many people seem to oblivious to his music (maybe its because music radio in the US seems more 'fragmented' by genres than it was in the UK, I dont know).

I remember his death and watching his funeral procession on TV like it was yesterday - talk about giving him a send-off to be proud by celebrating his life.

For music and cultural impact, the man really was an absolute giant - no exaggeration when he was called the "Third World's First Superstar"

If anyone wants to start listening to Reggae then apart from any Bob Marley album I would recommend The Harder They Come soundtrack album.

He's my second favorite (Stones are first, obviously). I've been listening to him since I was just a little kid- it was always playing in my brother's room. I my opinion, Marley and the Stones have a special "thing" found no where else in music.

But, I'm disapointed no one recomended Redemption Song...
