Have the Stones ever canceled a performance in their careers?
Posted by: RankOutsider ()

As I was talking to a friend tonight and he informed me of Keith's mishap I wondered if they might have to cancel some shows, then I thought about the fact that to my knowldge they have never canceled a performance in their careers, is that correct?

I ain't stupid, I'm just guitarded.

Some shows in Asia were cancelled in 2003 because of Sars.

I'm a bit fuzzy on this (someone will come on and have every little detail sooner or later) but on the European leg of the 1995(?) tour (UK I think) they had to postpone some shows because Keith's finger (or a couple fingers) became infected badly after he cut it/them on a guitar string. I also know they postponed some UK dates over taxes, had to play them the following year or Mick's taxes would have been MUCH higher. They posponed MTV's 10 spot show for a week (Bowie filled in the original spot) because Mick had the flu or a bad sore throat.I think in 1973 their Japanese dates were canceled due to Visa problems...someone will come on and elaborate.....

There are several, if I try to make a list, I'm guarranteed to miss some shows.
So, I'll only mention one, the famous Berlin show from 1998. The tour opened in Nüremberg instead, remember?
That must be the only tour-premiere-cancellation.

Read the IORR news and you will see they have cancelled quite a few times. Most times because Mick lost his voice, like tour opening Europe 1998, Jan 1998 ice storm and Mick's voice, tour start 1999 Jan Mick's voice, Keith breaking rib tour start Europe 1998, SARS 2003 and Mick once more loosing his voice same tour, all in the IORR news. But most times the shows were re-scheduled, except Bangkok. But they will do it anyway, so it is hard to find a show they really cancelled, i.e. never made eventually.

The tour start in 1999, as BV mentioned, wasn't the opening show, but show number 3 and 4 in San Jose.
One more "important" cancellation, was the Wales/Cardiff tour in Sept. 1973.

They talk about it on the fanclub dvd. The bit about the Hong Kong shows Ronnie says that they always make up for cancelled shows if they can. Of course it's not always possible, the China and Thailand gigs weren't rescheduled because of SARS, but i think the have some of the highest percentage of played shows over all those years.

Cheers,
Wuudy

In 1998, due to Keith broken ribs, some shows were postponed, other were cancelled, including two in France (Lyon and Marseille).

It was 1990 they cancelled UK dates (just Wembley?). Cut his finger on a broken string but i didn't mind because I got an extra ticket for the re-arranged date which ended up on the IMAX film

Actualy, they had an amazing run especailly when you consider the, shall we say, excesses of the road, until the late 90s...a few notoriously late shows but I don't believe an cancellations in 69 (depends how you categorize Altamont), 70, 72, 73, 75, 76, 78, 81, 82, 94 and 95...correct me if I'm wrong...

>> depends how you categorize Altamont <<

... what do you mean?

apparently the Stones did miss one show in 1964 (or was it 65) due to a miscommunication about the booking,
but i believe up to at least 73 that was the only one.

>> I think in 1973 their Japanese dates were canceled <<

i think in 1973 their Japanese dates were never even scheduled.

Anybody know the story on the 73 South Pacific tour? I remember when they did the Earthquake Benefit Concert at the LA Forum in January 73 there was some kinda talk about Japan not allowing the band to play there due to visa problems because of earlier drug arrests in England. Also what about the canceled shows in the UK due to Jagger's tax situation - that was only a few years ago I believe. Anyone?

>> Also what about the canceled shows in the UK due to Jagger's tax situation - that was only a few years ago I believe. Anyone? <<

the tax situation wasn't just Jagger's, it was the whole crew's. the shows were postponed, not cancelled. a tour by the name of No Security ensued.

>> Anybody know the story on the 73 South Pacific tour? <<

not much, but this is from [www.timeisonourside.com]:
January 4, 1973: Mick and Bianca Jagger return to Jamaica from Nicaragua.
The Rolling Stones learn they are denied work permits in Australia, jeopardizing their upcoming Australasian tour.
January 9, 1973: Japan bans Mick Jagger from entering the country because of his past drug conviction,
causing a cancellation of plans for concerts there. Australia lifts its ban.

so maybe concerts in Japan *were* announced and then cancelled - i don't know, sorry.

Theres a significant difference between a cancellation and a postponement. Many of the shows listed above were just rescheduled for later dates

In 1990 they cancelled a show on 16.7.90 in Dublin due to poor ticket sales (although with typical Stones spin they gave the reason as transportation difficulties). I actually was first in the queue to buy tickets for that one!

A few French shows in 1998 were cancelled due to poor ticket sales (not helped by the World Cup) and other shows cancelled earlier in that tour due to Mick's throat problems could not be rescheduled - Monza and Bilbao, I think.

In 1982 they had to cancel a few dates in Italy because they couldnt get licences to perform - Rome, Florence and Milan, if I remember right. They played Turin and Naples instead. Not sure if these shows ever went on sale, though (which means they're not actual cancellations) - however theyre listed on the tour t-shirts! I think a Barcelona show was cancelled for similar reasons.

As stated above, the Japanese tour was cancelled in 1973. The band were also scheduled to play Hong Kong on that tour, but didnt do so

Another major show that was cancelled was an outdoor performance at Pembroke Castle in Wales in September 1973 (if you got the 'Beggars Banquet' fan club package that was available after the issue of 'Undercover' you may remember the collection of commemorative postcards for several tours and concerts, one of which was this one). The band couldnt get a licence for this show.

Regarding Altamont, I was under the impression they only did a few songs...true, false?

Nah Altamont was a full concert, in fact with 2 BONUS songs!!

Isn't there speculation that there was meant to be a 1969 show (can't remember what city) which was cancelled ??

What about the South American shows initially advertised as being part of the "Tour Of The Americas" in '75. I think it wa Rio, Caracas, and one other (not Buenos Aires). Those dates are listed on that famous pic of the billboard w/the eagle & the entire tour schedule - were they ever booked or was it just wishful thinking/premature ejaculation on the Stones' part?

>> Regarding Altamont, I was under the impression they only did a few songs...true, false? <<

yikes, totally false - isn't it fine that this site can be so educational!
the way the Maysles brothers edited their film it looks like they played about three numbers,
but as Luke33's already noted, the Stones played their whole show and then some.
another reason to slap the next Maysles brother i meet ...

>> Theres a significant difference between a cancellation and a postponement. <<

thanks Gazza, i agree - but of course without you sayin it it doesn't sound real. :E
and: were tickets actually sold to those 1973 shows in Japan, Hong Kong and at Pembroke Castle?

Isn't it 2 recordings, with sssoul?
I didn't bother to get the DAC release, which was a bit worse than VGP, and recorded from radio,
but I thought that was from a different source....

I remember seeing a photo of Stones on the stage in Altamont,
and you can actually see a recorder placed on the stage.
It looks so eeeeh non-proffesional,
so I can't believe it's the Stones' recorder. It has to be a bootleger.
