Question for the Stones Historians here
Date: April 30, 2006 07:16

What was the most number of songs ever played at a Stones concert? And, where and when? I thought it was 26 songs, but it's not too clear now. I need the answer please, if anyone keeps track it's usually the IORR people so please post.

thanks

i count IYCRM and GOOMC as two songs, which they are - it's 30.

By my reckoning, it was the opening show of the Steel Wheels tour in Philly on 31.8.89

Yes I agree. Those SW shows were loooong; especially early on.

Brown Sugar in 1975 on the back of that flatbed truck in NYC - went on forever...

that one went on even longer because there was a power failure which lasted for about 10 minutes during "Shattered" early in the show

Here's hoping for a power failure at the Stade de France so the show can be over 2 hours!

thanks~~but is it 29 or 30? Does the medley count as 1 or 2? A medley is technically one song, so I'd say 29 is the correct answer.

It's 2 songs. If it was a "medley", where the play small pieces of several songs, then that is One song. But IYCRM/GOOMC are 2 songs that are performed complete, without skipping from one song to another and then back again.

Listen to If You Can't Rock Me / Get Off My Cloud. It sounds like one song to me.

a medley is technically one song.

what's with this technicality bullshite - it's not really a medley, TECHNICALLY. It's what's known in the dj trade as a segue...it's two songs. End of TECHNICAL discussion.

So then the correct answer is 30! Thank you for clearing this up! ABB the most played was 22 in Boston and lowest in China was 18. Most shows were 20 but I wonder if the European leg will be at 22 20 or 18. 21 would be a good number, or 22, the more the better!

As a Stones historian I'd like to remind you of the lingest versions of Midnight Rambler ever played in Los Angeles (CHARLIE WATTS AND HIS ROLLING STONES bootleg) which clocked in at over 14 minutes!

It's ok for me to consider Rock me and Cloud two different songs, but I have some problems to count in the two Billy Preston's numbers.

Kneb was 28 for me.

you should count the 2 Billy Preston songs as theyre performed by the Stones (without Mick, who's still onstage anyway although not on vocals). They just happen to have Preston on lead vocals and keyboards, instead of backing vocals and keyboards

theyre as much a Stones performance as a song sung by Keith, but with Mick offstage, is since 1981

You are right. The stones were performing those songs, they were in the set list and that makes 30. Still, it was a quite unique situation. It was Preston's spot: his own songs, he was the frontman, etc. I mean, one thing is Keith performing stones songs, another would be if he sang a couple from his solo albums.

See it how you like, but for me those songs were an addition that didn't really mash in well with the rest of the show and don't taste like 100% stones.

true - if you count an "intermission" as part of a concert!!

So I got another question: what was the longest song Stones ever played live? To my recognition it was Sympathy for the Devil at Hyde Park in 1969. It lasted over 18 minutes. Am I correct? Were there any longer songs?

On that note I've heard that Cologne in 1990 (I think) had a 30 minute power on Mick's mic during Sympathy For The Devil. I also heard it was only 5 minutes.

Sorry, my Danish dude, it was the second Hannover show (May 24th, 1990);-)
Mick on top of the tower, no voice, that synth congas and the whoo-whoo´s
of the crowd. 5 minutes max.

Unbelievable for a 1976 show...the band would have done a great jam then.
