Stones DSD Remasters (Not SACD's)
Posted by: RustNeverSleeps ()

Hi I am new on here. Can anybody tell me from where in the UK I can obtain the Stones DSD Remasters (Not SACD's). I know that normal CD's versions were made available in Europe around the same time as the SACD's were issued in 2002. However these appear to be hard to come by in the UK. Can anybody help. Thanks.

The SACD's also have the regular DSD cd layer so,I would say that's the way to go before they go out of print.

I don't like the digipacks. I purchased the Dylan SACD's and some of the card sleeves are wearing a little now. Thanks for reply.

I have heard this problem before. I think you'll find that the remastered series of 22 digipacks in all (UK) only come as SACD. The term DSD refers to the encoding. Hence you can only find this series on SACD.

As for the digipacks wearing, and you will hate me for saying this, it all depends on how one looks after them. Sorry!

Not sure about the UK, but in Canada I'm starting to see the ABCKO albums coming out as regular CD's again in the jewel packs. They're not the hybrid SACD's but still benefit from the Sony DSD.

OK. I just found a copy of the series. I bought it in Spain. It has a regular plastic case. And the wording is slightly different inside cover. Abkco utilized DSD encoding (the same conversion technology used for SACD).

So if that's what you had in mind it appears to be the same issue as in UK. SACD and DSD seem to go hand in hand. Confused? I am.

Before I get carted off to the nut house, what you're looking for is SACD. They are the same thing. Only that outside UK the covers have DSD on them.

No am not looking for SACD's. I actually have a copy of "Throught The Past Darkly" in my hand now. Its a DSD remastered rebook (ie CD layer only) edition of the 2002 reissues. The sound is fantastic. As for my Bob Dylan digipacks, I do look after them but as I am a huge fan of his Bobness I tend to play them 10 times as much as anything else I have, including the Stones. So to be fair you should not really judge me as not looking after my collection. The SACD's should have been issued in jewel cases its as simple as that.

I think they were issued as digipacks as an added "gimmick" for nostalgia. I've seen Zeppelin's catalog reissued in the small cardboard LP style. I've got all the Zeppelin CD's and bought most when they were reissued "remastered" back in the 90's. I'm tempted to buy them again in the LP style covers but I haven't yet. AC/DC also did this when Sony took them over a couple years ago.

What I have started doing when I only want to listen to the regular cd layer is that I just make a cdr copy so that the original is never in danger of being damaged. This helps when listening in the car etc..It's too bad that they never took SACDs further. How cool would it be to trade SACD-r's?

Which post Abko releases have the best sound quality? Anything from Virgin? How about those "USA collection" --those are the most recent releases.

And don't get me wrong here. I appreciated your suggestions, and thanks. However the one about me taking care of my stuff was a little unfair of you.

RustNeverSleeps,

If you can ever find the "Singles Collection" dsd version on vinyl, you should grab it quickly! I've only seen it once and that was in a Virgin megastore in Marseille in early 2004. I should have shelled out the 49 euros and bought it...

I take care of my SACD digipaks also but I listen to the discs alot too. I ended up putting the CD's in slim cases to reduce touching the sucky digipak itself. It didn't answer your question but it should give your Dylan digipaks a break from further wear.

The DSD encoded CD versions were released back in 2002 at least here in Spain. In fact I think I've never seen the SACD reissues, but those regular CDs with that DSD encoding system are still available on many shops.

Has anyone bought SACD on vinyl? I think they are 180g. Or are they on vinyl DSD also?

those "country-specific collections" are the same as the previous Virgin releases -
they weren't remastered again, i mean, just have those useless slipcase things.
