i was just listening to voodoo lounge and its been a while seince ive heard any of those songs- i really really would like to hear love is strong and sparks will fly played live on this tour - sparks will fly has that classic " keith" guitar groove to it but i realize that thats not gonna happen- it seems like they are loced on the same 20-22 songs a night with a few minor varations- anyway what do u think of voodoo lounge as compared to other stones albums-

They have only played a 22 song set three times this tour.I think that Voodoo Lounge is a strong album for the most part but, that it could have been better.I am going to side with Sparks Will Fly over You Got Me Rocking. If they do another album,I think that it would be time to bring in a different producer.

lessee 15 song studio album; 5 more than "UNDERCOVER" from the 80's...

peeps will vary on which cuts they think make the grade, or even,
really important cuts... any way, as i conservatively (and subjectively)
figure it,
there are AT LEAST 8 things here are really good, interesting,
well written and performed...and engaging...
some coasting and posturing along the way of course...

that, for me, easily makes VL the most consistent and interesting and
involving studio album from them since and including
UNDERCOVER, SW...to ABB...
all of which have a strong number or two, worthy of the stones rep...

i think they were really trying on this one and it shows. have always
thought it under-rated and underappreciated...and can not, to this day,
understand (unless it's young fans just coming to the magnificence of the
whole exciting live stones thing) why people would ever prefer SW, or especially B2B to VL!?

my faves here would be

i go wild
brand new car
sweethearts together
the worst
new faces
blinded by rainbows
moon is up

AND at least 5 more i find artful and rockin' and fun.
whadda YOUSE think? think this makes VL their most consistently good album since Undercover...as far as quantity of good stuff...
tho there are killer cuts on those other albums...

there would be ONE amazingly great cumulative studio album from '90 to now...
HIGHWIRE would be my first track on that imiginary beauty...

i'd even go back to mid-late 80's as i think VL stronger than Undercover and SW also...

here's the lineup; whadda YOU think...

Love Is Strong
I Go Wild Song
You Got Me Rocking
Brand New Car
Sparks Will Fly
Sweethearts Together
The Worst
Suck on the Jugular
New Faces
Blinded By Rainbows
Moon Is Up
Baby Break It Down
Out of Tears
Thru and Thru
Mean Disposition

Great album and great tour! Ahh 1994/1995!!!!!

hasn't aged well....more or less agree with Mathijs take on this being something of a "fake" Stones album. Songs that work for me:

I Go Wild
Suck on the Jugular
The Worst
Mean Disposition
Moon is Up
Brand New Car

...the rest I could take or leave...

the biggest disappointment with this album came after hearing all the discarded tracks on the Brew/Stew/Residue boots....coulda been SOOOOOOO much better.

I think I've posted this on here before....but here goes the rerun:

True Story:

A good buddy of mine has a daughter (now 18) who has been a HUGE Stones fan since she was about 2. Anyway - around 1995 she's listening to Stones VL practically non-stop. It's "show and tell" day at school (2nd or 3rd grade) and she asks if she can bring a song to share....you guessed it....Sparks Will Fly. The dad was summoned to the principal's office the next day, as you also probably guessed.....

Voodoo Lounge is a fairly average album. There are a few good songs, but far too much filler. It fit in the same category as albums like Undercover, Emotional Recue, Black And Blue and It's Only Rock 'n' Roll. In other words, Stones albums that I don't particulary care about.

VL in the same category of Black & Blue, IORR, Emotional rescue... gimme a break!
Agree with stonestod, could have been a great album if only they had chosen to release what they did not and put on the album the bsides of the single
suck is funny
mean is too
moon is up the only gem
imho

Mean Disposition and Moon Is Up is my favourites too.
Neverthless, I love Black&Blue and IORR.

I agree it hasn't aged well. There are some good songs on there, but a lot of them have a forced, superficial quality, like they are screaming at us "look, this rocks hard and/or sounds like our old stuff, doesn't it? DOESN'T IT?" I'm thinking of songs like You Got Me Rockin', Sparks Will Fly, Out of Tears, New Faces and a few others. They are pretty good songs, but they just seem so ... plastic. And some of Jagger's lyrics are so over the top macho (even more than usual) that it starts to cross over into Spinal Tap territory.

To me there's only one truly outstanding song on the album, Love Is Strong. I love that riff and the harp playing. The only others I still listen to on a regular basis are Moon Is Up, Thru and Thru and Mean Disposition. And once in a while, The Worst and I Go Wild.

You're right about Love Is Strong!

LIS just never did it for me. The riff was used to much better effect on Keith's Wicked as it Seems. The bridge on LIS just plain blows, folks.

I liked Wicked As It Seems but think of Love Is Strong as a better version of it, mostly because I like Mick's vocal better than Keith's. And there's Mick's harp playing as well.

they're strongest album of recent times... i rate it above ABB and B2B.

LIS is one of my favorites. Suck on the Jugular belongs on Goddess in the Doorway. Horrible song. VL was Keith's baby. Just listen to the Voodoo Brew/Stew/Residue set. VL would have been a better CD with songs like Honest Man and Zip mouth Angel. Left off SOTJ and MD. IMO.

Okay then!

When I stated that I considered Voodoo Lounge to be in the same category as the other albums I mentioned, I did literary mean that they're just albums I don't particularly care about. I wasn’t STATING that I necessarily thought Voodoo was as good as, or as bad as these releases. Just that, like the others, I COULDN'T GIVE A DAMN! I own them, but never play them!

I love this album very much. Very cool vibe. Songs like Love is Strong, Out of Tears, and Baby Break It Down are classics.

i would have to say it's better than those albums. IMO, IORR isn't really their best work, and ER and B&B are great but not as great as VL. However, I do agree that it hasn't aged that well. Which sort of adds to my theory that B2B is their best album Some Girls and that it will always sound new, fresh and exciting, whereas Steel Wheels, VL and ABB will sound dated.

Thru and Thru is my favorite

The Worst, You Got Me Rockin' and Love is Strong are also great.

A totally underated album! listen to the way Keith and Ron weave their guitars. personal favourites are:

out of tears - so emotional!
keefs the worst and thru and thru are astounding
also its got classic stones tracks which take pride of place in gigs alongside brown sugar and honky tonk woman such as you got me rocking and sparks will fly!
a minor masterpiece??????

It's not underrated at all. It was greeted with a lot of fanfare from classic rock types, and it still has ardent supporters here and elsewhere. Which I can't understand. Their worst album.

Yeah, I don't feel like it has carried over well. I actually think that BTB is a better album than VL. I mean, I like about four songs on VL - Love Is Strong, You Got Me Rocking, Moon Is Up, and Blinded By Rainbows. I think this was the time when we see the Stones as we know them, so that's why the sound seems a little forced and unsure

What, Anybody Seen My Baby is a timeless classic? Come on, songs like Love is Strong, New Faces, and Brand New Car (an absolute gem) have aged far more gracefully than most of BTB.

Re: Opinions on Voodoo Lounge

I'm not saying BTB songs are classics by any measure. I think pound for pound BTB has a better emphasis on rockers than VL - it's more nonstop. I don't really like Anybody Seen My Baby, but stuff like Flip The Switch, Low Down, Saint Of Me, Out Of Control, Too Tight are nice rockers. Maybe I spoke to soon, which is easy to do. It also happens to be the case that on my iTunes shuffle, only the songs from VL that I don't like come up, which probably has a lot to do with my resentment.

BUT

I think the album deserves another listen-through on my part
