As time provides more perspective..this album gets better.
What is most disturbing to me is those outtakes and B-sides are stronger tunes than some that made it onto the CD.

the shoot 'em dead, brainbell jangler!

yeah, I agree, I liked it when it first came out, was into how different it was, and then got a bit tired by it, but now like it. But what gives with some of those B sides not being on it! I am mean god, those idiot critics who got a hard on for Back of My Hand when there was Storm, which is a fantastic track. And the other B sides as well much stronger than some of the weaker tracks on the disc. But as a whole a cool album.

VL was my favorite post 81 album for years.
It took me years to appreciate BtB.
VL songs are great, but I think the production is getting a little bit outdated IMO.

Pretty dated.

Love is Strong was (IS) such a strong opener, that is is hard to believe how quickly the songs went backwards from then on to....Thru and Thru (another ripper). But everything in the middle, except Out of Tears and maybe I Go Wild and Mean Disposition, is pretty damn awful.

Good songs but produced in a boring way. No surprises at all.
I expected more after Micks great solowork with Rick Rubin. Never been a big fan of Don Was.

One of their all-time best IMO. For me, it's right after the big 4.

I say Voodoo Lounge is way more inspired than a Bigger Bang. It's way better. Can't even compare.

you try

Rough Justice An average rocker, nowhere near Love is Strong or YGMR
Let Me Down Slow Acceptable for Jagger solo, not for the stones
It Won.t Take Long Yeah, whatever.....
Rain Fall Down Ok, it's true that one is really good
Streets Of Love AH AH AH AH AH ! No comment.
Back Of My Hand OK, True again that one could be on Exile
She Saw Me Coming Hey Look at us we're Aerosmith !
Biggest Mistake Indeed...
This Place Is Empty (Keith) That one is good
Oh No, Not You Again Average rocker, nothing special really. Just as Rough Justice, the song is saved by Mr Watts.
Dangerous Beauty Pathetic...
Laugh, I Nearly Died That one really kicks ass, it's as good as Worried about you
Sweet Neo Con Could have been Funny if those guys were 16
Look What The Cat Dragged In So Keith needs to listen for INXS for inspiration ? Ouch...
Driving Too Fast That or nothing ? Eeer... Nothing.
Infamy (Keith) Please see above.

Love Is Strong Great groove !
You Got Me Rocking A classic
Sparks Will Fly Nothing great, but still more ispired than Rough Justice
The Worst A true Keith Classic along with You got the Silver
New Faces Very good ballad, smart lyrics
Moon Is Up Ok that one sucks...
Out Of Tears Classic Stones Ballad, way above Streets of Love ! How can you even compare ???
I Go Wild In the same league as Oh No Not You again
Brand New Car Groovy !
Sweethearts Together Nice experimentation. Love the accordion
Suck On The Jugular Groovy ! This is charlie's song
Blinded By Rainbows Ok, not soooo good
Baby Break It Down Please see above
Thru And Thru A great Keith song. The KR pair on VL is miles away from the KR pair on ABB.
Mean Disposition Good ol'Boogie, way more convincing than Dangerous Beauty IMHO

I love Voodoo Lounge. Was so excited when it came out and the tour behind it was great. I like just about all the songs, You Got Me Rocking is now one of my least favorites however because they have played it into the ground. I also think Out of Tears can be a little boring, the song seems to be missing something.

Someone says no surprises. I was pretty surprised when I heard them doing songs like Moon is Up, sounds like nothing they have done before. And yes the b-sides were great. I think this album is generally underrated among fans and critics. You also have to remember when the album came out, when alternative was huge.

now - was that so hard? I'm not a big ABB fan, so I'm in general agreement with many of those comments. VL? hasn't held up that well - B2B is holding up much better, I think.

You Got Me Rocking....a classic????????

Moon Is Up .....sucks????????

Moon Is Up is in my opinion top 3 on the album while ygmr really is average....nowhere close to oh no not you again.....

but for sure voodoo lounge is good...

Moon Is Up is probably the best Stones song of the post-Tattoo You era. (although a strong case could be made for Almost Hear You Sigh)

Yeah turns out they are really comparable actually... Don't know why but VL left a much stronger general impression on me than ABB.

Strongly agree on B2B, Flip the Switch, Out of Control, Saint of me, Always Suffering are real diamonds to me.

Interesting... I respect your opinion, but for me the best post Tattoo You song would be Out of Control... God !!! These horns and wah wah ! The energy in that song ! It was a killer in T.O. last september. And the lyrics are really inspired too.

love OOC too - but Moon Is Up is as close to INSPIRED as the Stones have been in the past 25 or so years.

It's a very good album but it has a few weak songs that really hurt the thing as whole. I would have would have cut a few songs out and changed the tracklist. It would have made the album stronger I think. I like the production, it's discreet but effective, the whole album has an old school feel to it. I love the acoustic guitars on the rockers, they really add something I think. Some strong riffs and melodies. They weren't trying to do nothing too different, just display some good old songwriting and I think it worked. Here's how I would have the album:

01. You Got Me Rocking
02. Sparks Will Fly
03. Suck On The Jugular
04. Out Of Tears
05. New Faces
06. Moon Is Up
07. Love Is Strong
08. I Go Wild
09. Brand New Car
10. Blinded By Rainbows
11. Thru And Thru

I think that VL is a really strong album. Good songs on it - Out Of Tears, Love Is Strong, Moon Is Up, Mean Disposition and everyone's fave that they can't get enough of - You Got Me Rocking. lol Just kiddin' people. It still holds up well IMO. smiling smiley

Having only recently discovered the volumes of outtakes from these sessions I think that period was very inspired. The actual album is pretty good but could have been great w/ diferent final cut choices and if it had more of that raw quality from the sessions intact. Many of the raw cuts have a real Beggars Banquet quality. This says to me that Don Was is holding them back from greatness.

Jump On Top Of Me is one of the best Voodoo songs. It's from Scrodoo Hounge or Voodoo Stew or Voodoo Brew or Stripped Companion bootlegs.

I heard Love is Strong (the web vote song) at Oslo Valle Hovin 98, and Thru And Thru at Stockholm Globen 03. Thru & Thru were nothing but fantastic!!! Much better than the version on Four Flicks DVD set.

I'd like to hear Out Of Tears live this summer. And I won't be sad if the play 'You Got Me Rockin'' too.

For me VL is a very strong album, which i like much more than SW or B2B! My absolute favourites: Love is strong and YGMR! But Thru And Thru, I Go Wild, Sparks Will Fly, Moon Is Up, Mean Disposition and Blinded By Rainbows are very good too!

VL is a very good album. I like so many songs on it. New Faces is a great tune. It reminds me Jagger's Angel in My Heart, or Lady Jane. But I've never liked Brand New Car and Mean Disposition. The second one I treat as a kind of bonus track. To me the album ends on Thru and Thru.
BTW: Has VL been released on a vynil? I've never seen it on a vinyl.

For me it is not aging well with time. I think its got some very average stuff on it.
Love is strong is great. Brand new car, Blinded by Rainnbows and Through and through I like a lot too. But the rest I can take or leave and out of 15 thats a poor return. Better tracks left off (same with Bcool smiley.

Bridges, which I at first didnt much care for, has gone the opposite way, and gets better with age, much stronger album than VL I think. Maybe they got the productionand pace of songs right with Bridges as well.

And Sparks will Fly..sharks will cry..blimey thats bad.

they're not even among the worst stones albums, let alone the worst stones albums ever.
