Great bangers: Jon Bonham, Tommy Lee, Chad Smith, Kenny Aronoff

In-Betweens: Keith Moon, Bill Kreutzmann, Ginger Baker, Frank Beard

Jazzy guys: Charlie Watts, Max Weinberg, Ringo Starr, Cos Clifford

Super Percussionists, NEC: Ray Cooper - looks like he's from outer space and plays like it to, very rare talent.

Right now, Chad Smith of the Chili Peppers is about as good as any drummer on the stage, and with Flea he's half of THE gold standard rhythm section in music today.

Overall all-time greatest drummer who ever picked up the sticks, could play anything, soft touch, heavy touch, gongs, u-name-it, energy to spare: I gotta go with Keith Moon, RIP.

Drummer Trivia: Did anyone happen to catch the Moody Blues Tour a few years ago that featured a "guest drummer"... the guy had like 2 or 3 large gongs behind him besides a major drum kit... I think it was the tour with the orchestral backing but saw 'em 3 times in past 10 years, can't be sure... anyway, WHOEVER that cat is deserves some major kudos, can he ever play. Best drum performance by an "unknown" guy I ever saw, including Cooper and Aronoff.

"It's just that demon life has got me in it's sway..."

Zak Starkey: Rock's No.1 current drummer IMHO.

Charlie Watts & Mick Fleetwood = Lifetime achievement award.

John Bonham: No longer with us but perhaps the greatest drummer ever.

Ronnie Tutt was fantastic - that whole band is just killer. For a good look at the TCB band, nothing beats Elvis:That's The Way It Is.

I seem to be the only one to mention Billy Cobham. No one comes near him. Check him out on Spectrum and Magic.

Beat me to it with Tutt - also check him out on "An Afternoon At The Garden".

Bill Berry is another one of my favorites - very sublte, and in the pocket yet propulsive as hell.

Benny Benjamin, Pistol Allen, and all the Motown session men are pretty damn amazing, too.

Yeah - Topper is like a much much better version of Stewart Copeland.

BB, I know you love the Jamaican music, so (if you haven't already) get your hands on Big Youth's Dreadlocks Dread album. A bunch of the stuff sounds exactly like "Straight To Hell" era Topper.
The album also has Lightning Flash (Weak Heart Drop), which is a beast of a song. The Clash were going to name the band "The Weak Heart Drops" after this number.

Favorites as opposed to who I think are the best, although most would fit both categories:

Alex Van Halen - VH
John Bonham - Zeppelin
Phil Rudd - AC/DC
Neil Smith - original Alice Cooper band
Tommy Aldridge - Black Oak Arkansas, Ozzy, Whitesnake
Cozy Powell - Rainbow, Whitesnake
Ian Paice - Purple

Phil Rudd - effortless power, pioneer of the "DUNK" finish to a song

Peter Criss - rat a tat. Jazzy and swinging (no seriously) on the early Kiss albums

Levon Helm - so lazy he makes it seem effortless. Leads the music by being at the back of the sound!

John Bonham/Keith Moon - wonderful for all the trashed hotel rooms and better appraised by others than I could ever do
