Fillmore (SF)

I don't like amphitheaters as a rule, but the Gorge (George, WA) is sublime....

i like a place with a sense of history - i don't think there's another still-active venue that comes close in that regard. beyond that, it's intimate with decent acoustics and a couple of nice bars - what more could you want?

Fillmore (SF), The Roxy (LA), Spreckles (San Diego), Copley (San Diego), BB Kings (LA), The Warfield (SF), Vredenburg (Holland) are all great places. Others like the Wiltern or even the Sun (Anaheim...now called something else) are really good venues, but a stop down from the others. Shep. Bush is good too...but seems a bit cramped...and the extra balcony seems too much.

The Whiskey has history, but the place is a dump. Best overall...probably Spreckles or the Fillmore. Best for sound...gotta be Vredenburg.

I used to live right down the road from the Wiltern and saw a few concerts there. Great venue, but you're right it's not as good as the Roxy. Only went there once but I was really impressed.

Massey Hall - Toronto!

The stones have never played there but Keith and the Winos did in 92 and Keith mentioned it was one of the best "rooms" he'd ever played. I was at that show and it was one of my all time faves. Man I wish he still played with those guys on occasion. I've been to numerous shows there and am anxious to try and score tickets to see the Black Crowes there I believe in May. Seats 2800 or so and is very old. Great acoustics and views from anywhere.

As far as larger U.S. Arenas are concerned the Ice Palace in Tampa seems to have pretty good sound as compared to other large Arenas where I have attended concerts. Sound is not so good but MSG in NYC is old/historic and always a fun place to see a show.

As for smaller places, the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. is a fun place. I also really like the Beacon Theater in NYC.

Albert Hall in London - great place to SEE a show but the sound echoes a bit too much for me although they have improved the sound the last few years.

Budokan in Tokyo is another old great place to see a show. Rock acts though sometimes over power the smaller Budokan with their modern sound systems.

Another good thing about the Budokan is that you don't have to put up with any drunken rowdies. Audience is very respectful of others.

I haven't been there in about a decade, but I've always loved the Orpheum in Boston.

For NYC, the Beacon is really nice; the Bowery Ballroom is my favorite small venue (600 cap., I think).

I gotta side with tat2you... Red Rocks all the way. Just amazing. The Gorge is verye special too, but overzealous security and the fact that you can only get beer away from the stage / seating area kind of put a damper on things a bit for me.

With indoor venues, I've always had a soft spot for MSG. Filmore in SF is nice too for a small venue. The Warfield, in my opinion, can get way too crowded. Saw Clapton once at the Royal Albert Hall. It was a wonderful experience... so much history.

How about The Roundhouse, Chalk Farm, London. It used to be a great venue in the late 60's early 70's.They held all nighters there back then and it was called Middle Earth. All the great bands of those days played there, including The Rolling Stones.
I heard on the radio today that they are gonna open it up again as a music venue!
Did anybody else on here ever go and get drugged up at the Middle Earth?!!?

It's in Washington State, about 2 or 3 hours east of Seattle. Stunningly beautiful place...

looks out over the Columbia River Gorge - it's practically in the middle of nowhere - drive from Portland is about 5 hours - through nothing but wilderness....

Tattoo: Red Rocks has aged well. I'll add to your list The Beatles first tour and Led Zepplin's first time around, opening for Jethro Tull.

Dead on, I do believe. Nothing beats an open dance floor with a balcony running around the edges of the room. Add the bar/lounge areas and the joy of coming in from/exiting to, Irving Place and Manhattan and you've got as good as concert venue as I can imagine. Capacity is, what, 1200?

Saw Petty & The Heartbreakers tear that place up. "Exile" was playing over the PA when I walked in and they did a mean "Heart of Stone" during the show.
