What songs were recorded for Black and Blue?
Posted by: Koschi ()

I read that there were 11 songs recorded for Black and Blue. I know that Slave and Worried about you have been recorded back then. But does anybody what the 11 song was?

Almost everything is available on the new Exile DoCD "Play It Rough" which unfortunately misses Never Stop (early slow version of Start Me Up) and Fool To Cry I (early lyrics) as well as some Rotterdam 75 rehearsal tracks, both also from these sessions.

That's because that wasn't recorded in 1975 for Black & Blue, but in 1977/1978 Paris.

You're wrong. Never Stop was recorded during the Black And Blue sessions. That's maybe the reason that it's sort of Reggae style.

No, I think I'm not wrong. It was played, rehearsed, but probably never recorded. And if it was recorded, it never surfaced. The version out on boot is from Paris, not 1975.

According to Hoffmann and Zentgraf Never Stop is from Munich 1975. But you could be right too. Nevertheless it sounds very much like mid Seventies, not 1977-79!

750325A 25th March - 4th April: Munich, Germany Musicland Studios. Producer: The Glimmer
Twins. Sound engineer: Keith Harwood.
Additional musicians: Billy Preston (p, org)/Ollie Brown (perc, cowbell)/Wayne Perkins
(gtr)/Harvey Mandel (gtr)/RW (gtr, bvoc; 30.3. - 4.4.75)
- Cellophane Trousers I (MJ/KR) -instrumental (uses Too Tough-riff)
- Cellophane Trousers II (MJ/KR) -version I with additional lead guitar
- Crazy Mama III (MJ/KR) -RW on guitar and backing vocals, Billy Preston on piano
and backing vocals, Ollie Brown on cowbell; backing track recorded on the 29th
March, Black And Blue-version
- Crazy Mama IV (MJ/KR) -RW on guitar and backing vocals, Billy Preston on piano
and backing vocals, Ollie Brown on cowbell; edited Sucking In The 70’s-version
- Hand Of Fate I (MJ/KR) -Wayne Perkins on guitar, Ollie Brown on percussion; early
version with partly different lyrics
- Hand Of Fate II (MJ/KR) - RW on backing vocals, Wayne Perkins on guitar, Billy
Preston on piano, Ollie Brown on percussion; backing track recorded on the 25th
March, Black And Blue-version
- Hey Negrita I (MJ/KR) -RW on guitar; early version
- Hey Negrita II (MJ/KR) - RW on guitar and backing vocals, Billy Preston on organ,
piano and backing vocals; recorded on the 2nd April, Black And Blue-version
- Hot Stuff I (MJ/KR) -; STU and Ollie Brown on percussion, Harvey Mandel on
guitar, Billy Preston on piano; instrumental backing track
- Hot Stuff II (MJ/KR) - RW on backing vocals, STU and Ollie Brown on percussion,
Harvey Mandel on guitar, Billy Preston on piano; backing track recorded on the
30th March, Black And Blue-version
- I Love Ladies (MJ/KR)
- Memory Motel I (MJ/KR) - Wayne Perkins and Harvey Mandel on guitars,
Billy Preston on synthesizer; instrumental, lacking some overdubs
- Memory Motel II (MJ/KR) - RW on backing vocals, Wayne Perkins and Harvey
Mandel on guitars, Billy Preston on synthesizer and backing vocals; backing track
recorded on the 31st March, Black And Blue-version
- Munich Reggae (MJ/KR)
- Start Me Up I (MJ/KR) -Reggae-version, under title Never Stop
Note: Some overdubs by RW were done in December 1975, some overdubs by Billy
Preston and Ollie E. Brown were done in October 1975.

That's not the well known version on the boots IMO.

I talk about the embryonic slow reggaeish version called Never Stop. It's so different from the familiar takes that it got an own name from Hoffmann.

It's available complete (!) on an LA 1975 VGP as bonus and on Tattoo Too 2CD aka Early Stitches.

Yep, that's the one from Paris, like all the other Start me Up outtakes.

Ok, I wasn't there (but where you Potted Shrimp?) - but i remember the day (nearly 25 years ago, oh God...) when I first received a tape with so called "Musicland outtakes" in brilliant quality (said to be 2nd generation) with 4 songs on it - Munich Reggae, Cellophane Trousers (called Cellophane Trouts back then), I Love Ladies (a.k.a. "I Love The Lady") and Start Me Up.

This version of Start Me Up is exactly the same version as the "Reggae"-version we're talkin' about.

Because of my source and the noticeable low generation on this killer-tape I had and have no doubts that ALL 4 songs/versions comes from the very same session - Munich 75.

Does any of Jeff Beck's work from these sessions exist or did Keith wipe them out completely?

I thought there was a version of Slave with KB on it but I've never been able to get it.

Place Pigalle is really good, but only contains a few tracks from B&B sessions. I got that one myself. To get more tracks from these sessions, you'll have to buy some CDs with worse quality. Black & Blue Sessions (IMP), Outtakes 1974/75, Reggae'n Roll or Play It Rough. Anyway, all of these CDs are in muddy quality, compared to Place Pigalle. It's stil interesting, like the first try on Hand Of Fate or Let's Do It Right.

Keith was in studio with Stones when they recorded B&B, it was made about 20 songs and some of them was released on Tattoo you, Jeff plays on Worried about you.

No he doesn't. It's Ron Wood (joke, it's MOST LIKELY W. Perkins)

Amazing that it took 22 years (I think "Never Stop" finally surfaced in 2003) for it to make it to a wider public ? How the heck could that happen? Is there more stuff you have that hasn't been booted? Like the 1989/SW version of "Gangster's Moll" ?
