as the meters played langerado yesterday, i asked myself
if there were several stones connections.
i think they opened for the stones in the 70s.
wasn't the drummer in the new barbarians?
there are connections to the nevilles and there was a
neville in the whinos.
any further informations?

The Meters opened in 75 and 76 (maybe also in 81?).

they are openig tonight!
just read it while checking the next tour dates.
i couldn't see them yesterday, cause they performed at
the same time as the flaming lips, but in the moments
between the lips-songs, i could hear them play.
i think they kick ass.
i will check out a record.

Last I heard Ziggy isn't in the current lineup known as "The Funky Meters"...Anybody know if he's back??
A couple years ago Sundazed reissued all the original (Josie and Warner Bros.) albums on CD, w/ bonus tracks (their website has a cool interview w/ guitarist Leo Nocentelli). A terrific catalog - my faves:
Struttin' ('70)
Rejuvenation ('74)
The Meters ('69)
Zony Mash ('68-71 singles & outtakes, nicely bridges the instrumental Josie era w/ the more rock-influenced vocal-era on Warners)
Look-Ka Py Py ('69)
Cabbage Alley ('72)

"The Meters are Art Neville, organ; Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste, drums; George Porter Jr., bass; and Leo Nocentelli, guitar."

Well thanks, that's great news - I'm a drummer & Ziggy's one of my all time favorites!

I first saw the Stones in 1975 - in SF - and the "Funky Meters" opened the show - great performance - never forgot the last name "Neville" since then - and of course now both Aaron Neville & The Neville Brothers are quite well known, regarded and respected (Dylan heard their Daniel Lanois produced version of his song, "With God on Our Side" and liked the sound so much he brought in Lanois to produce his 1989 breakthrough record, "Oh Mercy").

There's a bit about The Meters in the "Make it Funky" dvd, which was produced by Aaron Neville, and also has KR in it.

The Meters did a great cover of Honky Tonk Women on the cd "Satisfaction: Covers & Cookies of the Stones" [various artists]
