Hyde Park '69......a unique & great show
Posted by: Leonard Keringer ()

yes, it has flaws......mistakes here & there.....some tuning problems...now the good news: the setlist!....Lemon Squeezer, J.J. Flash, No Expectations, Love In Vain, Stray Cat Blues, I'm Free, Loving Cup, Mercy Mercy, Midnight Rambler (a unique version), Satisfaction, Honky Tonk Woman, Street Fighting Man, Sympathy For The Devil (a 17:47 version - never played that way again).......what we have here is the early ya-yas sound being worked on.......very rough, very raw.....breakin in this new kid M.Taylor in front of a few people.........this is the Stones headin' into a new live era...........if you don't like raw & ragged and great rock'n'roll, then this isn't for you

yes it is special all right - the sound quality and tempo put a lot of people off, i guess,
but those renditions really get under the skin.
the DVD is beautiful and absolutely worth buying - what an astonishing moment that was.
on with the impossible! just like ... well i'll be darned: just like the greatest rock & roll band in the world.

Hyde park was a great party. I was there on a hot day. Maybe 200000 or400000 there. Stones performed "Honky Tonk Woman" for the first time.

Some songs are better than others on this show. Honky Tonk Women and JJFlash, for instance, really, really rocks!!
I've got the VHS release, I bought it in 1990 or something. Is there any extra material on the DVD?

The Hyde Park show is very unique and fantastic in it's own way - not to mention a very interesting set list. I have an old Video of it and I only hope they cleaned up the picture a bit since mine's not a boot but it still looks like 3 rd or 4 th generation or something. Very washed out and contrast-y. The sound also seems to be a bit slow. It really deserves the same treatment "Gimme Shelter" recieved. A Classic must have.

Havo & Terry -

Do you remember approx. what time it was when they hit the stage? Just a little detail I've always wondered about.

I really find this show to be a bit depressing. It marked the end of an era with the passing of Brian Jones only a mere two days before. MT, Brian's replacement, certainly would step up to the plate as an unparalleled guitar virtuoso who made some great contributions during his short tenure with the Stones. However, the Stones, with the Hyde Park show, would embark on a new path as a juggernaut world-touring outfit and by using the same guitar-based rock formula for their subsequent studio albums from SF to A Bigger Bang. Forever gone was the effective experimentation in the studio that took place in the 60's. Forever gone were the days of playing in smaller, charming venues like Alexandra Palace. Also gone forever was the sense of danger, darkness, and rebelliousness that Brian brought to the band. 7/5/69 was indeed a very sad day in the long history of the Rolling Stones.

Quite an odd show from the drums point of view - Charlie was playing a drumset made up of half his old Ludwig set and half his new Gretsch set. The gretsch was black, the Ludwig was sky blue pearl (for those watching in black and white).

lol rockman me old triumph herald...yep those were the days ..what can i remember about that day, it was hot and some skin heads causing trouble...but it was mostly a peacful day, people chilling out ...lots hanging from trees..i parked my car on the ege of the park..and a van oposite me was selling honky tonk woman...saw the stones come into the park in a old ambulance...loads of police around them....the stage was so far away, but i saw jagger dancing with an african warrior guy during sympathy for the devil...i think the stones hit the stage about 1pm..as i was home in maidenhead berkshire at 5-30pm.it was just great to be there, my first stones show.

ohhh Neptune ... yes it was a dreadful hard day, and a stunning one. of course it was.
no one i'd ever heard of had ever done anything like that before - just go on like that?! how?!

you know ... i'm doing another workshop on the Stones next month, and a colleague of mine decided to collaborate with me.
she'd never been too into the Stones before - simply got intrigued by my last workshop - but she wants to do a presentation about their lyrics.
she's now read through dozens and dozens of them, and last time we met to discuss the workshop she said:
"JJF is a great example of the most characteristic thing the Rolling Stones convey - it's about ... "
[i held my breath while she hunted for the word]
"it's about survival."

ohh, you got it, baby - you got it. gritty and tough and mighty hard sometimes, and it lasts. it's the Rolling Stones.

Neptune, i don't agree with much in your mournful assessment of what the Stones have done since Brian left (love & light to him!) - but that's okay.
even if you personally don't dig what they do, that beautiful music you do love is right here.
it hasn't fled, it hasn't decayed or curled up or crumbled away. we can hear it whenever we want.
the Rolling Stones have been giving us all this glorious music *for keeps*. just exactly the Rolling Stones, all down the line.

is the Hyde park DVD complete? I'd hate to grab it and find out a couple of songs, Mick reading Adonais or the dead butterflies not there.

Leonard, is Lemon Squeezer this song of which Keno.org writes?

I'm Yours And I'm Hers (aka I'm Yours, She's Mine)
(Johnny Winter)

The Stones opened the Hyde Park show on July 5, 1969 with this song, the only time they would perform it. They played it for Brian Jones who died two days earlier. This was at the time, Brian's favorite song. Mick's vocals don't match the lyrics that Johnny Winter wrote, but Mick Taylor's slide sounds great. Released on the video Stones In The Park, in 1983.

I believe someone posted this by yousendit within the past 2 months.

I loved the JW tune on his raw 1st Columbia release.

no, it's not the complete concert; it's more of a documentary of the event than a concert film per se.
Mick reading Adonais and the butterflies *are* in it, as well as some really nice footage of the Stones before the show;
but only a handful of the numbers they performed are shown. it's beautiful, though; i can't imagine anyone regretting they bought it.

Yes this was one helluva concert.......the weird thing is that even when they played out of tune (not the song!).........it still sounded awesome!..how do they DO that?

I like the concert too. But more for its historical aspects, which include:

- First concert with Mick Taylor.
- It's in honour of Brian Jones.
- Special setlist and remarkable version of Sympathy For The Devil.
- Free concert for allot of people.

The musical quality is not exactly the greatest. But that's not all rock 'n' roll is about. Mick looks funny and that alone makes watching the show worthwhile.

But then, the 1960s were over. The society opened more and thus it got more difficult to break taboos on which the Brian Jones period was based on. However, it was probably Mick Taylor's departure which marked the end of the true legend that the Stones were. After that they were still big but they were hooked by the Big Business.
