Look you weirdo Sultans of Swing aint all that. In fact it is Crap! It blows chunks buddy. I have a guitar mag/cd that has the whole Sultans of Swing backing track. Sounds just the same as the original. Just some punk at the guitar mag playing it. Go back on the morphine drip ferrante/shearer/BAFFOON.

First of all, turn off the caps lock. Jeff Beck is the best guitarist that I personally have ever seen. He truly was playing every style of music, and doing so absolutely convincingly, with feeling and soul.

Ry Cooder is a LOT BETTER!

All right, has anyone ever seen Steve Morse, formerly of the Dixie Dregs and did a stint for a few years with latter day Kansas? I know this may sound a bit obscure, but he is one of the fastest guitarists I've ever seen, and I've seen him dozens of times. Other than that, Eddie Van Halen is an amazing guitarist and so is Al Dimeoli, formerly of Chick Corea and Return To Forever. Their fingers are a blur on the frets, they are so fast.

Oh, and FERRANTE, SCHEARER9 or whoever you are, Knopfler's good, I respect your opinion and all, yadda, yadda, yadda, but in my opinion he aint all that.

The group that made feel rocker since the day I was born was Dire Straits and I loved them as a kid.No compares to stones of course.My uncle had this lp where Knopfler is on the cover you know a strange one where his face is missing.I can't decribe it well beacuse my english are poor.So my first love was Knopfler.He is a great guitar player,but I am angry when I hear statments like he is better than hendrix and hendrix was making noise.What kind of bullshit are you talking about???Sultans of Swing great but Jimis songs are way better.Noone is better than hendrix.The others follow or imitate Hendrix.Not originals like Keith who is the king of rock'n'roll.

StratoGR, your english is just fine, better than many friends I know who speak it every day. Please don't get upset, please, because you heard that Jimi is "making noise," and that Knopfler is "better than Hendrix." Most people know that it is impossible to say Knopfler is better than Hendrix. Nevertheless, this is a matter of opinion. Each person who hears Jimi and Knopfler are entitled to form their own opinion.

I have been around this world a few times, and I believe that most people, even Mark Knopfler, would agree that Hendrix is a better guitarist than Knoplfler. I don't know this for a fact, but I feel it in my heart. I also feel that the person who started this thread (conversation) about Knopfler, is making his (or her) statements about Knopfler with the intentions of upsetting people. I don't know this for a fact, but I feel it in my heart.

It worked, too, didn't it? Are you upset? Lots of people got upset by this persons comments. That's cool, too. But I'm not upset. No, I am happy to be alive and breathing the same air that Hendrix, Ghandi, Jesus, Mohammed, and Mark Knopfler once breathed.

Did you buy that air on e-bay? Because I saw a listing for "bottled air that Keith Richards once breathed." It looked kinda murky, I'm not too sure about it.

Hell, ohno, are you telling me I've been breathing this cess pool of air I get for free, when I could've had some of that righteous Keith exhale air? Damn, I didn't think that stuff was still available outside of kings' debaucherous dens. And Money For Nothing, Lady Writer, So Far Away, and Tunnel Of Love still bring me to my volume knob to turn it up while I tell my friends to, "Shut up, damn it, while I listen to some righteous Knopfler, and his brother, and those other dudes." but still, if you want a person to acknowledge that they produced the "GREATEST ROCK AND ROLL OF THE WORLD DURING THE 80'S," I'm guessing your going to hear, "they weren't all that."

I could be wrong, and god knows I will apologize to you and all other impressionable readers if in fact I am wrong, but being the betting man that I am, I'm going to say, in spite of the knees and the volume and all that other stuff, that I bet Dire Knopfler AINT ALL THAT.

beatles-not r&r more like pop-didn't tour last few years of decade
70's-wings- I like Wings, but they're near the bottom of the top 25 of the 70's
80's- dire straits- zztop had more appeal than the money for nothin' boys.
90's- that was the best decade for the Stones???
00- the seals are more popular than McCartney.

90s: stones : examples: babylon tour, vodoo tour, no aouthority tour

Dire Straits are nothing but lift music,the only time you hear them now is as muzak in shopping centers their music was just pap that only appealed to yuppies and teenagers who played air guitar, Knoplfer is a fine musician who has done some great work with Dylan and Chet Atkins and some nice soundtracks like Local Hero but as a group Dire Straits must be up there as one of the most boring sterile sounding bands of all time.

Every band you ever hear at weddings and family get togethers plays Sultan Of Swing because its so easy to play and it appeals to all age groups from little kids to the old folks.

to sum it all up.....mark knopfler not only is the best guitarist of all time, but he is a great songwriter too.

he sings better keith richards...he sings ala bob dylan ......


but his guitar playing is out of control.....sultan of swing is so cool....

i always wondere how the beatles would have been with mark knoplfer on guitar instead of g harrison.

or the stones with knopfler instead of bryan jones or rod wood.

can you immagine knopfler playing solo on start me up or jump jack flash???
