Any One Write Lyrics
Posted by: jagger50 ()

I just had this one published. It's gloomy. About depression.

BLACK DOG.
I feel like I'm caving in and giving up
This fire and brimstone just won,t stop
I push it aside, but it keeps comimg back
I'm lost and floundering, my train's off it's track
All I've got is this black dog
I've forgotten what to remember
And what I forgot
Is that the light creeping under the door
I'm tired and drawn, can't go on any more
Each day passes with no conclusion
What's the point in this confusion
Some days are better left in bed
Some days are better with nothing said.

Winston Churchill suffered depression. He called it his black dog.

I have been writing for 30 years. Mainly for songs.

Jagger50. Good luck with that depression thing. I take it the song is somewhat autobiographical. As for Lenny and Elmo, short and sweet, and yet the words speak volumes (hardy har har).

Let me have a go at it:

Lonely ponies,
forgotten toys,
replaced with cars
and goofy boys.

No more pleas to stay up late.
No more time to sit and wait.

Empty hugs and untold tales
No handsome prince
No wishing wells.

When at last I looked her way,
I saw my daughter move away.

Pretty good, Lukester. BTW, I do write songs - some silly, some serious.

Wrote this many years ago for my band. Bonus points for who figures out what it is about winking smiley

It's half past three in the middle of the night,
Just came home and I'm feeling allright
But I hear, I hear somebody screaming
And I don't know if it's real, or if I'm dreaming

I take a glass and I fill it with wine
Hope some drinks will make me feel fine
But still, I hear somebody screaming
And I still don't know if it's real or if I'm dreaming

Then the screams begin to sound just like a train,
And I realize it's not in my brain
And now, I wake up with that feeling
That I still don't know if it was real, or if I was dreaming

Hey Koen, I'm guessing you used to live in that apartment building where my ex girlfriend once lived?

or you lived near the primate village of the NC Zoo?

and Elmo, lets hear one of your silly songs, no serious, no silly...aw hell just surprise us.

The Visitor.

The spacecraft crashed into the sand
A friendly face held out a friendly hand
You're here in time to see the dust
Left in doubt like the rest of us
If we come with you to another land
It's best we try to understand
Where rivers are wet and the air is clean
And the sky and land lay in between
The moon and stars are all beyond
From far away is where you're from
The tiny spacecraft covered in dirt
Are you the last or the first?
Time is only a state of mind
The equalibriams hard to find
No one listens and no one learns
For those about to be concerned
Sight and sound would seem absurd
If the spacecraft had the final word
Seigmund Freud is devoid
That's the message from asteroid
Creatures and features looking strange
The spacecraft came to rearrange
The rich the poor the priest and the whores
We all scream behind closed doors
If we keep up this fleeting pace
We may just meet in outer space
The alien speaks "I don't belong"
The rest of us sing a different song
The spacecraft left in a ball of dust
And the arrogant say "what's all the fuss."

OWZAT?

Hey Koen,
Your lyrics really sound like they would be good for a rock tune. I can feel it. Nicely done. In my most humblest of opinions.

I liked it, Jagger50. By the way, are there 49 other Jaggers just like you? I found it to be more cheerful than "Black Dog," (duh) but still not bubbling over with an abundance of hope, which I'm guessing is the point. Nice images, too. I like imagining a spacecraft with dust on it.

Thanks for the compliment. Actually, they are from a song I wrote winking smiley Fast blues scheme in B with a backbeat, and a screaming slide solo. Too bad I don't have any decent recordings left - they all got lost during moving.

That's cool Elmo. I'll drink a lot when I listen to it (that's not a real chore for me, trust me).

Thanks Lukester. Black Dog is my personal experience. And your lyric seems to be personal. Lyrics reflecting personal themes appeal to others as most of us go through similar things. When we read say your lyric, all parents of grown up children can identify it in themselves. Most of my 30 years writing is a little down. But not necessarily sad. Most songs written throughout the world have just one theme. The thing you and I and everbody goes through. Relationships.

I have been writing for years, LOL and like Keith it seems I "receive." If I try to write it sounds like crap, and then one day I will just sit with my 12 string and an hour later something has appeared. Sometimes it is just lyrics, a lot of times just music, and occaisionally both together and almost never "worked out." Likle this one below, appropriate for all of us aging on a Stones Board:

Well I can't see...much of the boy I used to be
When I look into the mirrow ...see the man looking back at me
And all my dreams and schemes...and all the rest
Have dried and disappeared ...with all my best
With increasing pounds and decreasing hair
They have vanised into the wind...like air

But I don't feel like I thought I would
It really doesn't hurt like I heard it could
And I can't rock but I still roll
And a freindly smile will make me feel whole

So departed friends...gone to heaven or hell
And to the things you left behind...I wish you well
Cause the things you missed...like greys and rust
Age better than your memories...you damn body's dust
You bought that crap screamed out by the WHO
An early death...the price you paid was due

But I don't feel like they say I should
It really does'nt hurt Like they told me it would
Now I can't rock but I still roll
And my lover's embrace can make me feel whole

So thank you darlin'...for all that latitude
And for my boys...they think I'm such a cool dude
And my sweet baby girl...shes' heaven's gift
For a simple paycheck...this toast I lift
A young pretty death is just poetic lease
Because reality loves every wrinkle...and every crease

And I don't feel like I thought I would
It really doesn't hurt like I l know it could
Now I can't rock but I still roll
And growing older has finally made me whole

The Fork in the Road

Just out of town, made of red cinder block
A place where the locals like to stop
The bathroom door reads “lighten your load”
At a joint called the Fork in the Road
A picture of a dead armadillo on the pavement
A knife and a fork by its side
They sell a lot of beer and liquor by the drink
And they serve a few items that are fried

The Sunday School teacher from the Church of God
Was here Friday night in a halter top
Riding a hog that made traffic stop
Met a boy with a bone in his nose
Had one drink and it led to another,
Then another and just one more
And while I can’t swear to it, everybody knew it
She went home with that circus boy

(Chorus)
We travel through life, some go light,
Others have a heavy load
You can go right but most go wrong
Down at the Fork in the Road
Down at the Fork in the Road

Young Jimmy Thompson just turned eighteen
Looking for the money to follow his dream
Sittin’ in the lot with his hand on a gun
Thinkin’ he should let the car run
He walked through the door with the gun in his pants
Heard a sound nearly made him cry
The pistol hit the floor as he looked out the door
Saw his car being taken for a ride

Common sense strolls out the door
When a drunken fool steps on the floor
A push and a shove is all it takes
There’s a fight and the glasses break
The bartender pulls the trigger on his gun,
And hollers “who wants to dance?”
A guy in the corner in a “No Fear” shirt
Swears he needs to change his pants

(Chorus)

CRAZY MARY

Well hide the babies she’s coming down the street
In the dead of winter in her stocking feet
Smells like urine and day old gin
With a hollow eye and a sheepish grin

Well Mary lives just outside of town
Folks can’t remember when she weren’t around
She lives all alone on here daddy’s farm
But Crazy Mary don’t mean no harm

(chorus)
No one believed a single word she said
When the sheriff came ‘round all the cattle were dead
Now a days she’s being all she can be
Crazy Mary is an abductee

If she watches a pot she knows it ain’t gonna boil
In a baseball cap wrapped in ‘luminum foil
She talks all night on a cellular phone
But folks say the damn thing ain’t turned on

(chorus)

She said there weren’t no sound just some flashing lights
It became high noon in the dead of night
They telepathically removed all her fears
Then they taught her ‘bout Jesus and his missing years

(chorus)

First verse:

Bustin balls off the court
Seems so long I must resort
I saw there you wore a frown
Came up to you and shook you down
You recall we still can say
Come out today Come out today
