Start from the top:

Gram Parsons & The International Submarine Band

Sweethearts Of The Rodeo (Gram with The Byrds). Buy the newly released issue with bonus tracks (most of the songs with Gram on lead vocals).

Some bootlegs from this era and earlier
Gilded Palace..

Burrito De Luxe

GP (Solo Album)

Cosmic American Music (bootleg) (Early versions and rehearsals.)

Gram Parsons & The Fallen Angels LIVE (a killer!)

Griveous Angel (very very good!) (Solo Album)

Dim Lights Thick Smoke... (compilation of unreleased incl Wild Horses). GREAT!

The very best of the flying burrito brothers

the BBC Gram documentary "Fallen Angel" (Sid Griffin brainchild)
is due for DVD release in the spring.
With rare footage and contributions from our Keith.
If you didn't see it on tv - get the DVD.. it sticks to the facts.

'Grand Theft Parsons'- is a good fun, Phil Kauffman inspired movie, which doesn't stick to the facts, but has some fine performances from the cast ,and if it helps a new audience reach Gram, then all well and good.

p.s...Dandelion = any chance of some Gram/Fallen Angels boots,
ovee on buy-sell??

The Burritos albums ("Gilded Palace of Sin" and "Burrito Deluxe") win on production and feel. "Palace," especially, is a stone classic. A coked-up LA hippie-cowboy freakout. With soul. Contains Gram's version of Aretha's "Do Right Woman" which is possibly the best summation of what he was shooting for.

NB: Gram left after those two records, but the Burritos continued on. Avoid the post-Gram material.

"Gram Parsons & The Fallen Angels: Live, 1973" What a cool record. This one is a treasure and avoids what I think of as the overproduction of the two Reprise solo records. "Cry One More Time," "That's All It Took," and the "Forty Days/Almost Grown/Bony Maronie" medley--amazing stuff.

The "GP" and "Grievous Angel" albums have been available for awhile on a single disc. Sooner or later, you need to have that material. But my understanding is that there is a "Complete Reprise Sessions" compilation in the works, so it might be wise to hold off.

The Byrds' "Sweetheart Of The Rodeo" album is one of the alltime greats as well. A must-own.

Went to the November '03 Tribute Concert, at The Union Chapel, London.

(special guests, Jim Lauderdale, Evan Dando, Sid Griffin etc, etc)

Not only was it a fantastic musical event, but i had the great pleasure of meeting Polly Parsons (Gram's daughter),
who's doing such a fine job of preserving her father's legacy.

DPowder seemed to cover pretty much everything. The only thing I would add is "Through The Lonely Nights" a comp of otherwise unreleased tracks recorded between Burrito Deluxe and GP (recorded with both the Bros. & his solo band). As far as I know, this is the only place you can get Gram's great version of Honky Tonk Women.

I also would recommend (as the good Reverend mentioned above) live 1973 - a real burner.

And yes, do all you can to avoid post-GP Burrito albums.

It is an incredible song--also brings to mind the tribute album "Grievous Angel: A Tribute To Gram Parsons." So many excellent covers--Whiskeytown (featuring Ryan Adams) does an amazing take on "A Song For You."

the tribute album, is fantastic and comes highly recommended.
Great contributions, from Lucinda Williams, Emmylou, Whiskeytown, Wilco,
Elvis Costello etc, etc
my personal favourite is The Mavericks version of Hot Burrito #1
- a gem of a song.

amen to all above comments, especially Rev. Robert W.'s pointing to "Do Right Woman" as a summation. Right on. also the 'Return of the Grievous Angel' cd, produced by Emmylou Harris, with Grams songs done by various people (great version of Hot Burrito # 2 by the Mavericks) is a good tribute cd.
When is Stanley Booth going to finish the GP biography he stated he was writing?
Sid Griffin did a good one but I think Booth could really capture Gram..they're from the same town, and we know Stanley Booth was there.

Just for your listening pleasure:

"Still Feeling Blue" - Gram Parsons + The Fallen Angels
Live at Max' Kansas City, New York, March 9, 1973

[s53.yousendit.com]

It's an excellent audience recording, posted on Dimeadozen some months ago. Will reseed it maybe if it's banned now for inactivity, but we'll have to wait until Dime is back.

Btw, Gram was a genius in my opinion, I love all the great music he gave us solo and with the Burritos! And it would be really cool if the TV documentary would be released as DVD, it's a must seeing!

I would highly recommend the DVD of the Gram Parson's tribute concert, “Return to Sin City”. It has some excellent performances. My fav is Keith doing a duet with Norah Jones on “Love Hurts”. Keith also does “Hickory Wind”. The grand finale jam is “Wild Horses” with Keith singing the first verse.

Just got finished watching Return to Sin City for the first time, great stuff. Seems like yesterday that that the tribute show in L.A. was being discussed on this board but it's been two and a half years now.
I've always known that Gram was interred in New Orleans, but never knew exactly where. After watching Fallen Angel a couple of months ago, I discovered he is actually about six miles outside of N.O. alongside U.S. Hwy 61, the same Highway 61 that runs through Mississipi blues country. Turns out I drive past Gram every day on my way to work. Perhaps I'll visit the cemetary one day and post a pic here if anyone is interested.

"It's just some friends of mine and they're busting down the door"

Re: Gram................

great thoughts and knowledge from all in this thread. Gram's songs, his voice, are singular in music... who else could have written a song like "The New Soft Shoe"?
that one to me is beyond knowing, its in the realm of pure feeling. the lyrics deal with ...what? a car designer named Cord, a southern mall where someone is speechifying..and the line "did you ever hear a song that's hard to even play"

I love it. the GP/Grievous Angel disc is a must but as everyone has mentioned, so are the others!
another way to appreciate Gram is to listen to others who may have picked up where he left off...Lucinda ...Chris Hillman...Emmylou Harris...

I don't drive by there every day anymore, but I haven't forgotten about it.
I'll get out there eventually.

Side note: Last Saturday night stumbled onto a movie on the independent film channel (IFC) called, 'Grand Theft Parsons'. This is a fictionalized account of the theft of the body of Gram by his manager who granted Gram's wish to be creamated in the Joshua Tree desert. It is hilarious, and I recommend it - anyone who's a fan will get a kick out of it.

Yes, quite hilarious. Of course, the part about renting the limo is B.S. A friend already had one. BTW Jonny knoxville of Jackass plays the part of thier manager.

Also quite funny is the Guy Terrifico movie... the main character is somewhat based on the Gram persona.
