Janis was good but I much prefer Patti Smith (still sounds great today) Don't forget Grace Slick either plus a British jazz/blues singer called Linda Hoyle who played solo and with a band called Affinity. Mustn't forget Polystyrene too from X-Ray Spex for sheer enthusiasm.

In no order: Billie Holiday Bessie Smith Mahalia Jackson Aretha Franklin PJ Harvey Nina Simone Bjork Ann Peebles Marion Williams Dorothy Love Coates Patti Smith Gladys Knight Celia Cruz Nico Patsy Cline Emmylou Harris Mavis Staples Big Mama Thornton Ella Fitzgerald Sade Lyn Collins Big Maybelle Irma Thomas Mary Wells Martha Reeves Ronnie Spector Sister Rosetta Tharpe Maria Callas Omara Portuondo Tina Turner Etta James
Hands down on top of the poop pile. Just because you wail & spaz out doesn't mean you're good. Look at Joe Cocker...that performance at Woodstock was horrible...no matter how famous it is...then again...it's a bad song.
Ok, new rules, if you're unattractive, can't sing & spaz out...you're really artsy & therefore you must be good. With those rules...I'll put Janis #1...of course if she was good looking, folks wouldn't hold her as high...
janis wasn't great 'cos she could wail and spaz out - she was great 'cos she could SING the blooze like few before or since. End of story. If you don't think she could SING, I have some serious doubts about your ability to hear.

Listen to the original version of Cry Baby (Garnett Mims & The Enchanters) and you'll never want to hear the cover again. Baby.

I hate to use this as an example, but if you ever watched American Idol or other versions you will find that many of these young singers fall into a particular category of voice. (if you have kids you have to watch sometimes) and everyone says you sound like this one or that one. But how often does one come along that sounds like Janis and can sing at the top of her lungs like that. Very very very few if any. She was one of kind. Is she Aretha Franklin, or Maria Callas, no but a lot of those blues singers you mentioned can be bundled into one group. Different genre's > > > > > >

I don't think so. Ronnie Wood told a story that he was at a party and she was there and she was flirting with him. He was freaking out because he didn't want to get with her, but he didn't want to insult her either. Then, luckily for him, someone else (Hendrix perhaps) showed up, and she switched her attentions to him instead. Ronnie jokes that he was gracefully saved from an embarrassing encounter.
guys, you really should check out beth hart, compared to janis a lot even played in a musical called janis but: way better. never seen a performer like it. i can recommend the dvd beth hart live @ the paradiso. you will be blown away. frank.
For sure Janis is #1 but Tina is a very close second. It's a shame there are so few female rock singers of quality and the word that is important is ROCK! I am not thrilled with female singers of today and I can't think of any that can be even put in the same category as Janis and Tina. I always loved and still love Joni Mitchell's voice and Karla Bonoff as well but they are more folk singers. Alanis Morissette is ALMOST in the same category as Janis only leagues BEHIND Her! I always loved Grace Slick so I'll put her third on my list. I am not a huge Patti Smith fan, and Chrisie Hynde is just OK!

I'd love to hear Lisa do a rock album on her own but her solo work that I'm aware of is pretty poppy. She even has a song called "Some Girls" but sorry to say it's not that "Some Girls".
Janis Joplin was the greatest female rock and roll singer of all time. Tina Turner is *not* rock and roll. Tina is a time bomb that delivers unadulterated sex in one soulful salvo. One can't really compare the two....Janis was kicked in the head with a beer bottle and laughing about woman who lived and died in psychedelic blues rock.
