I was driving home from the market last night, channel surfing the radio when Janis Joplin came on "Cry Baby" I think thats the title.
I cranked it up full volume and just listened to her wail it out. Now I've heard the song dozens of times but this time I listened to it very closely. Man can this girl sing. A very unique style.
Which had me thinking, has there ever been a more definitive female singing voice? Again the mid 60's to mid 70's will never be repeated. Best of the best.
Janis always has me mesmerised. Tina sings countryrock better than the other girls. but bullet to the bones every time Jennifer Herrema- the sweet heart behind royal trux.
any advise on a great Live janis collection?
I'm free to do what I want any old time... I'm free to sing my song knowing it's out of trend

yep....and "this business is killing me"..........gabba gabba
Why only the old ladies? I'm a die hard of the Stones and Avril Lavigne (21) as well, although three of the Stones could be her grandfathers. Unbelievable great performer with loads of future potential. Hope she will be opening act in Europe someday.
i can think of a handful of female rock performers that have been decent the past couple of decades - Chrissie Hynde and comes immediately to mind. But, rock is more or less a man's world, for better or worse....
Janis J. was the first concert I ever attended; WOW she was wonderful ! Not too many people there [an old auditorium in Nashville, that's also gone] but she raised the roof.

Janis was support at some 69 MSG shows? could be wrong. remember hearing wyman moanin about her groanin. amazin to finally see some o her set on the woodstock dvd extras. all slo mo and sublime. beggers belief how her voice and style could have flourished even more with age, even just a few more years. shit thats choked me up now.
PJ & Patti both outdo Janis as rock n roll singers.
As far as Janis being even considered as the greatest female blues singer ever, some of you need to put the pipe down.
Janis Joplin was a decent singer & a hall of fame drunk. Dying young and hideous certainly added to her reputation, but she shouldn't enter the "top 20 female vocalists of all time" discussion.

Was this at the Universtiy of Texas Student Union?
Anyway I think that Janis was a very unique singer. She poured all of her soul into her music. She had a very powerful and distinctive voice. Was she the best ever? I don't know, Pat Benetar has some serious chops and so does that Austrialian chick from the Super Bowl. Janis did leave her mark though....gotta go listen to Mercedes Benz...I sing it to everyone I know who ones one!

They still play occasionally and are probably a better band NOW (much tighter anyway) then they were when Janis was their singer. I saw them in a bar (not even a real "club") a few years ago. Three original members, a new guy on lead guitar, and a Janis impersonator. Maybe 30 or 40 people in the audience. Best band I've ever seen in bar. The chick singer had Janis down, right down to flirting with guys in the audience, which was pretty weird, because SHE wasn't really flirting with you, "Janis" was flirting with you. It pissed my wife off, I can tell you that!
Last I heard Sam Andrew was trying to get a TV network to buy his idea for a show called "Search For The Pearl" which is supposed to be sort of like that show where they found a new singer for INXS. That show got terribe ratings so I don't think the "Pearl" thing will ever fly. Advertisers don't give a shit about people in their 50s and let's face it, that's who would be watching a show like that.

So name the 20 female vocalists that are better than she
I would put Janis in the top 20 only b/c I can't think of 20 female rock singers worth mentioning. She really wasn't all that good...and as far as Avril Lavigne...I REALLY hope this is a joke...Crow stinks too btw. Patti Smith by far is the best female rock singer I can think of.
Come to think of it...I'd probably even put Lita Ford (who I can't stand) over Janis. Joplin had a few good songs (my fav. being "Call On Me"), but is REALLY overrated.
