John Lennon - Do you think he is one of the top 10 figures of our generation?
Posted by: ShatterednVA ()

I am interested to hear everyone's thoughts on his legacy. Personally, he is one of the 10 most influential people in my life. I also feel that his music and his actions were more important to society than the Beatles.

Yes he's more important than the Beatles now or at least he used to be. During the Beatles he wasnt really, they were a bit like four parts of him. Maybe he was schizo? Paul was important in the Beatles of course. But afterwards no, not at all. Lennon isbigger because of his naked soul in 1968-1971. He made a great impact during those years and its none of that peace thing but the music, lyrics and feel. Also he was in a lot of pain and that made him special cause he didnt hide. When he hid behind the comical and witty mask it made him special too. He was a very special person.

Like any person that promotes peace and is then a corpse in the most vile of ironic ways, he/she's bound to become an icon of sorts. Or at least their legacy is.

I'm a huge admirer of him in so many ways but he was such a living contradiction (which alot of us are I guess) it's hard for me to make what to think of him at times.

My initial reaction, feeling wise, is one of awe when I think of him so for me I guess I admire him greatly. I also feel very sad for they way his life ended.

But even causes aside, his body of work musically is really only comparable with McCartney and Dylan. Love or hate the guy or anything in between, one simply cannot deny his absolutely enormous influence over modern music.

I felt very humbled when standing out front of the Dakota and at Strawberry Fields in CP - it was a wonderful thing to see so many people there at any given time (I visited four times) and not only that, the age range of people there.
I remember a girl of perhaps five or six asking her Dad "what did this man do?" and her Dad just smiling and looking over at me (was standing next to him) and saying "you'll know one day".

Definately one of the icons/figures of our generation, at the very least one of mine.

Have you ever lent somebody $20 and never seen them again? It was probably worth it.

Sure, an icon for 3 to 4 generations.

John is certainly one of the TOP 5 voices of our time! ( Voice meaning not only singing). He was also one of the most complex, intelligent musicians ever to rise to such status; I have been watching the Dick Cavett interviews and his wit, sometimes very cynical humor, and presence are the things that jump out at you! He was a force! I have also visited the Dakota and Strawberry Fields and it always makes me very depressed for a long time after, I mean days. The heaviness lingers even now when I think of that day in December, the 8th day to be exact. Yoko still says it was the 9th, something about John's mystical number. Anyway, his short life was like a meteor, bright, like lightning and then gone too soon.

That's my thought as well.

From what I know he was a reclusive nut. Yes he made some great music, but I've read too many accounts of his "peace" activisim that make me question his sincerity, and motivation.

He made some great music...isn't that enough?

So has Dylan and that's enough, sure. But, Bob's in the top 10, too.

So you need to be American - or make a revolution somewhere near the US - to be a figure?

not at all but some songs are nice. the "voice" of the Beatles is george. But medias make what they want, aren't they ? mozart mozart mozart james dean james dean robie william...NO // too simple. I prefer mick jagger or george harrison. They are themself. I prefer "bangladesh" than "live 8" LENNON: bof... imagine or let it be, the same thing : boring. demago indeed. "WOMAN" IS GOOD (true lennon)

I don't put murderers and freaks ahead of a creative genius like John who inspired good things! Maybe I misunderstood the question but I think he was looking for GREAT INFLUENCES not the killers who robbed us of JFK, RFK, and ML KING! GEE!!!!!

haven't read thru all this thread, but Lennon and the Beatles never made an impact on me.
I was on fire with satisfaction and heared help, but no way, the stones can't be removed from my #1 spot.
from then >----------------------------------------------------------->to now

I haven't been influenced by Lennon , by his glasse, by his wife....
even his music kept me cold.

nothing to get exited about - IMO.

You may care otherwise - I love Mick & Keith

Isn't a negative influence an influence just the same?

I thought it was importance that was being discussed here, not who was the sweetest.

It that's true, then Chapman had as big an impact as Lennon.

Open-G says it all for me too. I am always suspicous of people who are held up for sainthood, always appeals to the cynic in me. John Lennon is always talked about in hushed reverential terms and like most people no-ones that good, even our John. Some of his music was ok but most left me cold."I Am A Walrus" what the hell was that??????
