Rate the 'Flashpoint' version of Satisfaction

Certainly a novel version of their time honored classic, it is my personal favorite.

The counting part is kind of fun...overall, not very good. Doesn't it have horns on it? Yeeech. Satisfaction is NOT a horns song (when the Stones do it, ok for Otis Redding).

The horns is precisely what makes this version stand out. Very brash, theatrical and celebratory.

Keith originally envisioned it with horns...

I love this type of comment. Like we fans know best that the musicians who created the song what they should do with it.

Don't like it. Far too mechanical, with all those "can you hear me one time"... and so on. Liked the 99 version a lot,

Brutal. much, much better in 69, 81/82, and 2005 B-stage,

I love THIS kind of comment.

Am I not allowed to say I don't like Satisfaction with horns?

Lots of opinions around this board, sorry, get used to it. I kind of think that sharing our "takes" is one of the fun things about posting.

By the way, I know Keith envisioned it with horns initially...notice they didn't record it that way!

I actually.....uh hum....don't like this song much at all, never have. JJFlash were it for me, as the raw primal 60s single. And JJFlash has aged better and better...whereas Satisfaction seems to have, well, just ... aged.

Agree with you about 2005, disagree about 1981. I think 1981 version was the worst ever. Scratchy 100% play (i could suffer something like 75%...). Mick was singing as if he was munching roasted chick-peas...

In my opinion, this is the one song that has never sounded as good as the recorded version, which is just sooooo cool.

I would like to hear them play the song on the B-Stage, in the original arrangement -- slower tempo, with Mick singing in the higher octave. I would add Street Fighting Man as the other song that I think sounded best in the Studio (tho Stripped was good).,

I never listen to Flashpoint . . . and I generally can't stand the '89/'90 tour . . .

but I love that version of Satisfaction.

I'm glad they don't play it that way anymore - but it's good to have on record. It's a real kick-ass version - kind of an Otis nod crossed with Vegas. Makes me picture Elvis singing it - and I mean that in a good way!

Glad it's captured on record like that, glad they play it straight nowadays.

What ruins Flashpoint, and especially Satisfaction, for me is Jagger's absurd will to show himself as some big screamer. On most original versions as heard on boots his vocals are just amazing. Why on earth did he re-record them with all that silly growl?

Flashpoint is the one album on which he seems embarrassingly concerned with sounding young or dangerous instead of being his super cool self.

But I like the revamping of the song. The Tokyo version rocks like hell.

The only good live version is the 1981/82 version. Didn't like the 69 version with the muddy riff played on the light strings, 89/90 was 100% Vegas. Afterwards, it became boring, but in 81/81 it was great IMO.

Mediocre, a little boring, not rough enough, "over-produced". I prefer the boot versions of this tour. There is a much longer and rougher solo from Keith (Philly '89, London '90 e.g.).

In my opinion it's just OK... am I the only one here that thinks the '98 versions were the best?

I like very much the intro with the same note on guitar befor it blows into the riff..!

The version in 'Gimme Shelter' was the best

I liked the version they did on the Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle tour, especially with the James Brown ('give me one time/two times' etc.) bit towards the end. The Flashpoint version seems to be heavily edited.

But nobody's mentioned the 'Leeds '71' version, strting out kinda like The Velvets before that big Stax ending - the definitive version, IMHO.

Keith has alwqys said that Otis Redding got it right and that was how it was suposed to sound.

It is really hard to beat the 69 version. A different feel, a different guitar sound...it was the best version ever.

Yes the Leads version is great - although Mick has no voice at all that day. And I agree that the 97-98 versions were excellent. The one from St Louis is exceptional, compact and powerful.

I liked the fact that on VL they played it about 7-8 songs into the show - at a time when people didnt expect to hear it (most 'warhorses' tend to be either the opening song or played in that final 40 minutes of the show). It always kicked the show into overdrive.

I agree that the version in "Gimme Shelter" is the best live rendition of it.

It's never really sounded quite right live. They never have enough fuzz or volume on Keith's guitar for the opening riff. It should pin you to the wall like it does on the studio version.

I actually like the fact that Blondie plays acoustic on the song now. The acoustic in the studio version gives an almost subconcious lift to the song (also in Brown Sugar).
