Single-Greatest Live Renditions of any Song by the Stones
Posted by: BornOnTheBayou ()

There was a thread about this a couple months ago...

To that thread I have to add:

"As Tears Go By"... Chicago U.C. 1-23

"Can't Always Get What You Want"... Chicago U.C. 1-25. As interesting in it's own way as it was on the Exile/Sticky Fingers tour. Very unique and elaborate lead by Ron Wood makes it a standout.

Here's a link to ONE of the prior threads this topic:

"Midnight Rambler" from Brussels '73 has to be it, but a close second is "Out Of Control" from MSG, 1/16/98 - the one on the promo "OOC" single (I think it's the "Don Was Mix" or something). MUCH better than the album version, better than on the St. Louis '97 DVD, and even hotter than the one from Buenos Aires on "No Security".

The version from two nights before (the first MSG show) is still the best thing I've ever witnessed with my own two eyes, though. Anybody have "OOC" from the 1/14/98 show?

Love Midnight Rambler from Welcome to New York, some of the blusiest dirty riffing on any record.

If You Can't Rock Me/Get off My Cloud from Love You Live! Man they nail it, great raunchy power riffs, and Mick is so intuitive with his cat calls and moans.

Satisfaction from Gimmie Shelter "why don't you go down on my baby" and that hilarious look Jagger shoots Keith when he hits that raunchy chord!

You Can't Always Get What You Want from most of the 72 performances.

Symptahy for the Devil from Get Your Ya Ya's Out. Sublime!

Apart from the well-known Brussels/London 1973 recording which is truly outstanding in its entirety I always found some other live songs brillant:

Love in vain (GYYYO and Leeds 1971 - I wish there was a stereo version of that one)
Time is on my side 1981/82 (can't decide which is the best version)
Waiting on a friend 1981 - the version from the TOP OF OLD SMOKEY bootleg
Salt of the earth - Atlantic City 1989 - different from the album arrangement but great

The greatest visual live performance I saw was

2,000 lightyears from home - Munich 1990
