New York City meeting place Jan 18-20

Mustang Harry's
352 Seventh Avenue (between 29th and 30th Streets)

Great place to meet up.
We have been using it on every tour since 1998.
Longest bar in NYC they say, may be it is true?
Plenty of cold draft beer for any taste.
And they have great food as well.

I will try to post proper info about this place
and also a Boston meeting place if I can find one soon.
So that they are properly linked from the IORR tour pages.

Mustang Harry's is on the MSG side of 7th avenue,
just 2-3 short street blocks from MSG.

How does Mustang Harry's compare to Walters Bar at 389 Eighth Ave (29/30th)? The Shidoobees are having their little get-together at Walters.

I prefer the dive atmosphere of walters, but as i'd like to meet some of you guys, i'll follow your lead.

Walters is a nice little pub but it is simply too much noise and not really possible to sit down and eat properly, as it is very small. And they used to smoke there so you could not even breath. But now may be NYC have got smoking restrictions like other cities? So I use to drop by there to see some friends too, for a five minutes talk, but it is impossible to talk or move really. Mostly for drinks. Nice thing with Mustang Harry is they have almost endless capacity, and still a nice bar for drinks. It looks small and intimate from the front but inside they have lots of space for foods and drinks. But I will list both of these when I get to update the NYC links pages about what is on in NYC Jan 2006. One more thing. Mustang Harry is open all day so it is a great meeting places even for a lunch, fish'n'ships, a snack or just some early drinks.

If you are planning to have a meal at Mustang Harry before the show on the 18th and/or 20th then I can arrange for some tables to be reserved for us at 5pm. They don't really like reservations as they want to have the flexibility on show days, but if I have names and do know who is coming they give us the best tables still in there. MSG is 2-3 minutes walk crossing a couple of streets so it's quite central.

And if you are still looking for hotels in NYC, I noticed the Ramada right next to MSG on 8th Ave is still available at 135 dollars. That is cheap in NYC, and it is much better than Hotel Pennsylvania, who many people have been reporting about small creeps in the rooms, beds and so on.

I was just checking out when the RS shows use to start at MSG - because some may fly in late. They (RS) are on around 9:45, give or take 5 minutes. I guess the curfew is 11pm. Which means show start closer to 10 with a 2 hours set. So even if immigration queues do take longer these days, you should be safe as long as you are inside MSG before this time. Then, while reading old reviews, I also found the "Mustang Harry Napkin reports". Comments on the show written by fans and friends on a napkin at 2am in Mustang Harry. Check out the comments and the show review. Why MSG is so great? Read on!

Hi BV,

I will be there, straight from Portugal, for the Jan 20th with my wife a friend of ours.

We will be for sure as MustangĀ“s!

2 questions:

Are we allowed to smoke during the concert at MSG?
Is it easy to get inside with a small foto camera, or the entrance is heavy controlled?

thanks as always and see you at Mustangs Friday 20th aroun 5pm!!

Sure. I forgot about that incident, when the Major of NYC saw Keith on TV HBO direct broadcast, doing his cigarette as usual on stage MSG. And how he tried to stop the show.

These days you are not allowed to smoke any place in the US as far as shows goes, I think. I have been to a few shows, and every place you go they ask you to get rid of the cigarette immediately if you try to smoke inside the venue. But they allow you outside many places, in section that belongs to the "inside", so that you can get your nicotin kick. The only place I saw some more "liberal" smoking laws was in Nevada and may be in Texas? In Las Vegas NV they did actually smoke inside the casinos, in the hotel lobby areas and also in the elevators. Like being in a time macine. They did not do it for years where I come from.

Cameras? Many places allow them, but most of them ask you not to use them. If you are desperate to make a bad photo or three - mind you private photos are often bad due to small lenses and poor lights - just make sure it is private, and don't flash or annoy anybody. But remember they are not allowed. I did not say it, but a famous Al Bundy quote is (not my recommendation still) : "It is not cheating unless you get caught".

Keith is doing one cigarette every night as part of the show. It is as sure as he is saying "goot to be here, good to be anywhere". It is lit then he is tossing it away as he is starting his first of two songs. He did it every show Licks and every show Bang. Some times I wonder if he does it for Marlboro but I think he does it for his image. On Licks he did that cigarette one minute only for most of the shows. On this "bang" tour he smoke a little bit more. I mean real smoking not just image smoking. Still people think he is a heavy drinker and smoker.

dont be silly. That rumour was obviously nonsense and completely fictitious. Just because someone starts an "I heard theyre going to play at..." thread doesnt automatically make it in any way credible.

Bit pathetic if a 62 year old man feels he has to light up to keep his 'image' up.

I hope youre not trying to suggest he's not a heavy drinker!!!

Hey, if the Stones don't show up you can at least have a great Double and Potato Pie and take in all the music history in the area... Queens is really the "birthplace" of rap you know.

Everybody is welcome to Mustang Harry at any time during the Stones stay in NYC. It is not a closed event place. You don't need a badge and you don't need to book or reserve anything. It is an open bar & restaurant. I have been there on every tour going through NYC and MSG since 1998, meeting new friends, talking about Stones or just relaxing with a meal at lunch, afternoon or evening. The nice thing is it can be used as a meeting place, so that you can arrange to meet friends there whenever you want. Or you can just drop by and talk to anybody with Stones T-shirts, scull rings or any other symbols that's telling you have the passion for the greatest rock'n'roll band in the world. Even at 5pm or 6pm on show day you can find space there so just drop in!

Hey Bjornulf, are you gonna be at the MSG for the January concerts?

I go to many shows but I am kind of Greta Garbo type don't like to be in the center of anything and don't like to print my picture. Don't ask me why it's not a gimmick I am born that way. But there are many people who know me and if you ask for me in these places then I am sure you will find me, if you want to meet up and say hello. I am not organizing these meetings to be seen or to be the one to meet, but so that everybody can met and talk. Yes. I will be in Mustang Harry. Often. Every day. And yes I will try to find a nice similar place in Boston too soon. And it would be great to meet up!
