Yes, it's a bonus cut from the official Criterion DVD release...

I hope I'm not crossing the rules that much, this is just one track, in very basic sample quality...

You can also hear this on the famous MSG boot, recorded from the audience, and it actually sounds much better.

Two reasons it was never officially cleared for release by Mick and Keith:

1. The e-string is way flat. That's not so obvious on the audience recording but is crystal clear here.

2. Possibly due to factor 1 above, Keith ends the song a verse early. Mick starts to sing the rest of the song, and then is forced to say: 'Uh well ... alright!'

Still I would have been happy if it had made 'Get 'Yer Ya Ya's Out!' a millenium ago!

For some truly GREAT live versions of Prodigal Son, check out Detroit, San Diego, Boston and other '69 shows. In Detroit, the audience claps along with each verse. and every time Keith play his solo, they positively go crazy.

My only regret is that they didn't play this song when I was at Altamont in '69.

You can see Keith adjust the string in the middle of the song.

This brings me (back) to the question, Who evented the accoustic set? U2? NO WAY, period!!!! Some people like to say the Stones follow U2 (1994), this is bullshit!! Never ever!!!!

Koen:

Cool! I haven't seen the video footage so I never knew that. But that confirms what our ears already knew.

Hey all: A question I've asked elsewhere:

Boston '69, Prodigal Son. It REALLY sounds like someone (probably MT) is playing 12-string. A total departure from Keith's usual National Steelbody 6-string. Other knowledgeable people have written in Shidoobee and initially speculated that it was Keith on a different guitar, but 'upon further review' changed their mind. Check it out if you can. The sound is unmistakeably different; the fat, multiple string sound - combined with the light touch of the bass string runs - suggests it's either MT playing a 12-string alone with Mick, OR that it's MT and Keith playing together. The second scenario is unlikely, however, because the initial warmup notes really sound like a solitary 12-string guitar.

... Yes, I have no life because I think about this a lot. But if it's true that MT once did the accoustic set with Mick, that's interesting historically.

Last point: Christiaan - you're DAMN RIGHT. The Stones were doing unplugged before that word - and before U2 - existed.

love the visual of Keith seated with just Mick singing. that's the way they started As Tears Go By this tour too...probably should have just kept it that way - really no particular need to have the band play along.

On the picture that with sssoul posted, Keith plays a slide. What song are they playing there, No Expectations?

Dude, there is no slide on Prodigal Son in the outtake clip posted in the first post by vedran. I am referring to the 4 pictures from Joseph Sia posted above.

great 2 acoustic songs...
The band would only play them if they thought the crowd would "dig" 'em....there are some '69 shows where they didn't play those 2 acoustic songs.

Here's Carol - AUDIO ONLY! Can't find the DVD right now, and don't have much time anyway... This is what I had on my hard drive for some time, so I figured I could share it...

And keep in mind, this is in ac3, the original intact DVD stream. You'll need "Media Player Classic" to play it or find and download ac3 decoder for WInamp, WMP, etc.

it's gotta be You Gotta Move - thanks for noting that, Koen, and multi apologies for implying that it's Prodigal Son.
i was so charmed by the way the Glimmer Twins are behaving that i didn't even notice the slide.
those shots are from one of the MSG shows, by the way.

"What do you want - what?!"

Those pics are among my favourites that have surfaced here on iorr. Especially the two middle ones. Thanks for sharing.

He tunes the string a first time, but it only gets worse, then you can really hear it (or at least I could). Then he tunes it again a few bars later and more or less fixes it.
