I believe the MT 1958 LP he played with 1969-72 is at the Hard Rock Cafe
Have we ever located Keith's Dan Armstrong 1969 guitar? Or is that forever gone ...?

It's funny how Taylor, in particular doesn't give. F...

I think Taylor’s guitar is with the Hard Rock Cafe, yes.

Others here, have commented that Keith’s ‘69 Tour Dan Armstrong is definitely still missing. If it had surfaced, I’m sure we’d have seen pictures and read discussions about the discovery, here.

Keith had two Dan Armstrongs. One in standard tuning, and another one in open G tuning (the one he played Brown Sugar with in 1971).

He did play one on the ABB-tour, methinks, but that was most probably a replica.

I don't remember him playing the Dan Armstrong but he did play the 5-string Newman guitar on "Sway" in Glasgow in 2006

The 1969 DA is the better version.
Keith also played a DA early on the 1972 tour...

Keith had three DA's -the 1969 model with white prototype humbucker used on the 1969 tour, and a second model added for open G for the 1970 and 1971 tours. The first one got stolen in July 1971 never to be seen again, and the second model was most likely given away as a present. He replaced both with a new 1971 model for the 1972 tour, but he didn't like the thinner neck and only used it for the first couple of shows. He used a new 2006 model sparsely on the following tours, and on pictures from the Hackney Diamond sessions he can be seen using it again.

Keith and Ronnie both played Dan Armstrongs during the 2007 leg of the ABB tour. I think they were assumed to be replicas (need to check the old ragbag boogie threads). Just from scrolling through the pictures in the 2007 tour review page here on iorr, you'll find photos of both of them with DAs from the Rome show onwards (Keith probably during Sympathy and Ronnie on the B-Stage (IORR or/and Satisfaction)

That was the 5-string Zemaitis guitar. As fas as I know he only played a Newman in 1973 and then in 1979 with the New Barbarians, and a loaned Newman on one show in 1981.

Just about all guitars they played from 1968 on have resurfaced one way or another -at the Hardrock, with collectors, in the collection of the Stones. The main guitars missing are Keith's 1969 Dan Armstrong and Ron Wood's 1972/1973 Metal Top Zemaitis stolen on the Bahama's in 1977. Keith's 5-string Pirate Zemaitis guitar was destroyed in the LA rental house fire in late 1978.

Taylor sold both his 1958 and 1959 Les Paul guitars used with the Stones in 1982/1983 to a London shop, for 5000 pounds each. Both guitars were then bought by musicians, not collectors. The 1958 ended up with the Hardrock Cafe, and the 1959 (with the stripe between the pickups, now called the ' Exile Burst') still is in the hands of the musician, who takes it to guitar exhibitions and conferences for anyone to look at and play it.

What happened to to the Ya Ya's SG? Might have even been called a Les Paul at the time.

The story is vague -it was used in the summer of 1971 in Nellcote, and dissapeared after the robbery. But according to Mick Taylor he gave it to his brother in law Robin Millar. But there are no pictures of Millar owning it, even though he showed his studio and guitars during various interviews. But then Taylor also sold some instruments while in the Stones and after for various reasons.

There are many threads on IORR related to Keith and his guitars.
Using search like the one below on google would give some of those threads:

guitar keith site:iorr.org

If someone could e-mail me, or pst here, the 5-10 most important threads in a list by URL, then I could merge these ino one main thread, and add it to the "Forum links of interest".

This one is definitely not made by Tony Zemaitis.

Tony made only two Macabre.
One owned by Keith, which got stolen or disapeared somehow and a second one with the exact same specs which is now in the hands of a private owner.

5000 pounds each is peanuts for a Rolling Stones' guitarist who was still a big name at the time.

Well, £5,000 in 1982 is about the equivalent of £25,000, today. One still may think that ‘low’ for a guitar belonging to a famous musician, but guitars were not the collectible valuable that they are today.

Tony Zemaitis made at least three Macabre's: Keith's original, one exacxt copy for Zemaitis collector Kurt Scheidegger in 1981, and a 1990's six-string version, also for Kurt Scheidegger.

The 1981 copy has sold for 80K US$ some years ago. Noteworthy is that it isn't a 100% copy of the original as the body is about a centimeter thicker and has a more shallow taper of the front horn.

After Zemaitis death he sold his drawings to the Japanese Zemaitis company, and they made more copies of the orginal, but they do vary a bit from the original.

That was the going rate for 1950's Les Paul's at the time. Taylor was broke, didn't have a contract with a record company, and had sold his royalties back to the Stones in 1981. He needed money to relocate to New York and tour the USA with Alvin Lee and Bob Dylan.

Do you know what happened to the white Music Man Silhouette that Keith played from 1988 to 1990?
Because in 1992/93 he played a black one?

Keith still has the white one, he used it in the studio until at least 2007. It was part of the Exhibiotionism Museum collection of instruments.

The black Silhoutte was for sale on Ebay years ago -apperently through Alan Rogan Keith gave some ofd his gear away that he was not planning to use anymore. His Boogie MK1 amp and his black SiLo were among those. The guitar was up on ebay and then dissapeared again. If I recall correctly the body and neck where then sold seperately.

So...in summary..
Taylor's 58 LP, Hardrock Cafe
Taylor's SG ..MIA
Keith's DA 1969 model ...MIA

Would love to see the DA show up one day...I'm guessing serial numbers are unknown?

Thanks for the replies...always fascinating

It's even unknown if Keith's DA had a serial number. The first 20 or so guitars were prototype models with a white resin pickup fitted. These guitars were given to musicians and also used for display at guitar fares, and most likely did not have a serial number. When the guitars went in production the pickup material was changed to a brown resin, and serial numbers were added on the back of the neck.
