Favorite Stones Compilation(s)

It's probably a matter of when they came out: SUCKING IN THE SEVENTIES (I didn't know about TIME WAITS FOR NO ONE until years later) and REWIND are the two that stick out for me (my dad had BIG HITS 1 and both HOT ROCKS) because I got them as a young teenager understanding they were new.

Friends had MADE IN THE SHADE.

I didn't find out about BIG HITS 2 until later.

With the internet I found out... holy crap, there are a lot more than what I saw in the 1980s and 1990s.

JUMP BACK was interesting but just a slightly updated REWIND. FORTY LICKS was interesting at first, with the four new songs, of course, but more so because of the agreement between ABKCO and Promotone via Virgin. It hasn't aged well due to the 4 songs not allowing 4 other better songs.

Contractual agreements, like SITS, or contractual fulfillments (REWIND with Atlantic) or blatant marketing (2012) or just because (HONK), there have been plenty of compilations. Decca (ABKCO) leads the charge with the most.

I know they're essentially obsolete in the digital streaming age but... they did (still do) capture a block of time (the ultimate pre-playlists?). THROUGH THE PAST DARKLY is more poignant than the second disc of HOT ROCKS for its time - its immediacy for the time and it's the original album home of Jumpin' Jack Flash and Honky Tonk Women.

Culturally relevant in that aspect.

The Rolling Stones (Promotone) have released:
Made In The Shade
Time Waits For No One
Sucking In The Seventies
Rewind
Jump Back
Forty Licks
The 2012 horribly titled one
Honk

ROLLED GOLD was, originally, an much more interesting version of HOT ROCKS for the UK - and then got the PLUS treatment in 2007 by being expanded with an additional 12 songs, basically making HOT ROCKS (and in a lesser way, MORE HOT ROCKS) irrelevant.

My favorite is REWIND, quickly followed by SUCKING and then HOT ROCKS or BIG HITS 1 and 2, depending on what I want to listen to.

For me, it has to be the two originals: Big Hits, and Through The Past Darkly. These Decca compilations are the perfect companion releases to Aftermath; Between the Buttons, and Beggars Banquet and Let it Bleed respectively. Subsequent releases may be more comprehensive, but there’s no personality. And yeah, U.K. releases all the way!

I recall as I first got into the band in 1980/81 purchasing "Stone Age" and "Slow Rollers", two interesting ABKCO compilations that I didn't realize weren't part of the "normal" discography.

The Italian version of As Tears Go By on Slow Rollers was the very first time I'd ever even heard that existed.

It's funny really, how in one way you could see that ABKCO through it's greed was actually ahead of the curve, insofar as creating playlists of songs you could mostly already access on other albums. They sort of tried to prey on the public's ignorance of the material, pulling out obscure material and adding them to known songs to make the "new album" seem unique.

I think Stone Age originally came out at the same time as Sticky Fingers and the band put out a full page add disavowing it or something like that.

Yes, the advertisement appeared in the New Musical Express, I think.

Hot Rocks ... and More Hot Rocks!

My first one was Through The Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol.2) (UK version), Czechoslovakia pressing and the second Made in the Shade Bulgarian pressing. I liked the latter but had a kind of mixed feeling about the former. Maybe I was not ready to the mix of blues rock and psychedelia winking smiley. Years later I got West German pressings of Rolled Gold (on Nova), 20 Super Hits By The Rolling Stones (on Decca), The Legends Of Rock (on Decca) and In Concert (on Decca). The last one was a combination of GLIYWI and GYYYO as a double LP.
Sure, Hot Rocks 1&2 as West German London CDs. And Sucking in the 70s on CBS CD.

Still think that Rolled Gold (original LP but not a remake on CD) and Made In The Shade are their best efforts. Well, I have a soft spot for West German London CDs Hot Rocks 1&2 because of unique stereo mixes.

The “first” always holds a special place cuz it turned me onto the Stones.. Just finished my paper route, stopped at a garage sale and picked up High Tides and Green Grass for 25 cents

My next purchase was Hot Rocks, those are the only two Stones albums I need (even tho I love the others smiling smiley

That's a big part - the personality of certain releases makes them relevant to the discography where a something sweeping, like HOT ROCKS, is, well, it does have Midnight Rambler from GYYYO! on it, which is kind of bizarre.

Another aspect of the albums that I wasn't aware of until the internet - the UK and US edtions. Last year I completed the ABKCO 2002 reissues (as best I could) and got the UK edition of BTB and AFTERMATH. The two hits comps aren't available.

The UK (Decca) editions make the most sense since that's how the band wanted them while the US (London) editions were different. Of course, REWIND was the next and last different release like that.

I've never seen anything said but it seems to me that TIME WAITS FOR NO ONE having 3 GHS and 3 BAB songs on it because of the UK tours for both of those albums were only in the UK.

Angie and Bitch were on MADE IN THE SHADE so they could've done other.

For me it is my mother's copy of Rolled Gold which I played a lot during the late 80's and early 90's as I sat on the floor with earphones while my mum, dad and brother watched telly. The last side was my favourite with Shelter and HTW. HTW is essential in how I fell in love with music at an early age.

Although, I must admit that the best compilation for a hardcore fan in pre-CD era was German The Rolling Stones Story - Part 2 (The Rest Of The Best - Single-Tracks And Rarities From The Decca-Period) 4LP box. I remember paying a fortune (100 DM) in 1996 for that one.

For myself, REWIND is the compilation I had played most often in my CD player over the years (interesting too is that there are two versions of REWIND - UK and US - with slightly different track listings. I owned the US version. Wished the two versions had been merged).

I also found it curious why "She Was Hot" (which I personally preferred to "Undercover Of The Night") was never included in the compilation, but the REWIND cover art was taken from that track's promo video.

Ahhh! Yes! Exactly! It is weird that She Was Hot wasn't included.

With playlists you can make your own UK/US combo expanded (for example, include Shattered, She Was Cold and She Was Hot) and it's a fantastic 'hits comp'. The latter material featured on JUMP BACK isn't as interesting. HONK fills it all in, essentially the Promotone HOT ROCKS.

I made a playlist from the CDs covering SHADE-HONK plus newer and it's essentially REWIND Deluxe which got called SIXTY LICKS. It's also way too long to just simply listen to.

That's awesome! And I agree that "Shattered" should have also been included in the REWIND track listing (as should have "Wild Horses", to make it a perfect 1971-1983 compilation to my ears).

I'm amazed that All Down The Line didn't make it onto MADE IN THE SHADE, only TIME WAITS FOR NO ONE.

Hot Stuff appears on SUCKING and JUMP BACK.

Star Star made it onto TIME WAITS.

All Down The Line is a song that should've been released as a single, which apparently they considered, but if Star Star, Dancing With Mr D and Dance Little Sister can make it onto a hits comp...

Why didn't they release a third single from EOMS? They persisted on EOMS being a double album and the second single was Happy?

WTF were they thinking?

That's just the way things were done then.

The amount of singles didn't increase until 1981, kind of, if you want to count the videos of Neighbours and Worried About You, but 3-4 singles was the normal by STEEL WHEELS.

I love the Telefunken/Decca (TELDEC) compilations from the 70s and 80s.

Slow Rollers and Solid Rock, for instance.

100% agree. In my opinion, "All Down The Line" is as strong a track (if not stronger) as is "Tumbling Dice". Easily could have performed very well on the charts as a single and should have been considered for at least one of the many compilation releases back in the day.

And that’s more than fair enough.

About this album: I discovered it in the late 90’s, and always thought of it as just another U.S. studio-album. It did baffle me initially upon later reading that it’s a ‘compilation’ For those American’s amongst us, and around at the time: was it advertised and marketed as such? December’s Children is also a cut-and-paste job, yet that’s considered a ‘studio album’

I discovered the Stones via my dad's Hot Rocks cassette, so that will always be the most important one to me. This was 1989, 8th grade. Next I bought Steel Wheels and then I bought Rewind.
