RIP Stanley Booth

Memphis author, music historian and cultural critic Stanley Booth has died.
A brilliant prose stylist and fearless reporter who often became part of his stories, Booth was the rare writer who was as colorful and compelling as the subjects he covered, which included the Rolling Stones, Otis Redding and Elvis Presley.
Booth died late Thursday night at ACH Harbor View nursing home in Memphis at the age of 82. His daughter, Ruby Booth, confirmed his passing. Booth had been in poor health for several years and had recently been moved to hospice care.

Sorry to hear of Stanley Booth’s passing. I have read his book on the Stones several times and is my favorite on that era. My condolences to his family and friends. Rest in Peace Stanley…

I cannot picture him, but he’s a very familiar name in the Stones sphere.

Rest in peace, Stanley Booth

My condolences to friends and family. It gives me pause, to think that a character in the Stones story like Stanley Booth, preserved in my mind as his much younger self, was in a nursing home somewhere. It underlines how lucky we are to be enjoying new music from his contemporaries the Stones, and anticipating more in 2025.

It was the time when authors (it worth also for some others), were also able to become very close (almost friend) to their subjects.
Long gone era...

Never met the man but we had an early email correspondence in 1990s.Not sure I'm ready to rewatch that Gimmie Shelter outtake at SF heliport. That moment between Stanley and Ronnie Schneider carrying on like loving freinds. Both gone now alais!

I'm making an assumption that the gentleman wearing the denim jacket listening to the playback of Brown Sugar with Mick and Keith in the hotel room is Stanley Booth, correct?

Stanley Booth's article for The Saturday Evening Post that featured his fly-on-the-wall view of the recording session for Otis Redding's "Dock of The Bay" is one best pieces of music reporting ever.

You feel like you are one of the lucky people there in the room at Stax on that very historic day whenever you read it.

47 Bermondsey Street, London - Autumn 1968 - by Ethan Russell.

An interesting set of rehearsals. Mick sometimes not being present as he was filming Performance. Tony Sanchez also took photos and Stanley Booth was also there and wrote about them with 2 articles appearing in Eye magazine in spring 1969 which later formed part of his stones book.

Anita was also sometimes present and filmed them on her cine camera. In the late 1990's she showed her silent cine-film footage from Bermondsey at 'The Horse Hospital' in Russell Square which was accompanied by an atmospheric musical soundtrack of her choice.

I hadn't dropped in on IORR due to being busy with family this past week, but it saddens me to hear that Stanley has passed. Great writer, and very knowledgeable about music. He was there.
RIP Mr Booth....

Since 1984 I repeatedly gone back to the Stanley Booth book, The True Adventures of the Rolling Stones, looking for Stones information.

One thing that amazes me about his book is what an excellent memory Ian Stuart had of dates and events in the bands history. Of course, in 1968-1969 when the info was compiled, just a few years had passed since the band started. I wonder if Stu ever kept a journal?

Thank you Stanley Booth for your contribution to Rolling Stones/music history!

When True Adventures came out I was living in Europe, and due to lack of access to the English-language music press I didn't get the message that it was actually a good book, and not one of those quickie cash grabs aimed at naive fans. I hadn't thought about it in years, but I've just ordered a copy, and I'm really looking forward to reading it.
