OT : Taj Mahal is fantastic!

One of my favorite guest's performance was when Taj Mahal showed up in Chicago(05/28/13) and with the Stones covered the country r&R gem "6 days on the road". The Stones are very excited, Taj is "On" big time and the result is a rocking performance that means a lot.
I have been listening to Taj Mahal's music lately and what a musician!

Yeah that "6 days on the road" cover was great, better than "Corinna" they'd done previously IMHO.

On a related note, a Jesse Ed Davis article where Taj Mahal contributes : [archive.ph]

He's great, I remember getting that Paint It Blue record back in '99, his HTW was deltaheaven!

I heard Taj mahal at the very small pub called hagges Tonder - a pub isn by the festival. It was in 1988 but I still remember the concert as a fantastic one. The pub cannot have more than 70 spectators - so the audience was very close to this Fantastic person. A Great evening.

I saw Taj a few years ago, on Sept. 23 (maybe 2021).
I was there during soundcheck sitting near his tour manager who was doing the front-of-house sound.
The guy turned to me and asked, what day is it today, the 23rd? I said yes, Sept. 23, John Coltrane's birthday.
So the manager speaks into the soundboard mic and says "It's John Coltrane's birthday."
Taj then started playing a few seconds of My Favorite Things.
I thought that was pretty cool.

I really enjoy Taj in the R&R Circus, but don’t know much more about him. Can anyone suggest a good starting place with a a CD or two?

You can't go wrong with this one, contains a number of raw, hard-driving blues classics. This also might of been his first release. Both Jesse Ed Davis (been a lot of chatter about him on this board lately) and Ry Cooder are also featured as backing musicians. This is an album i've kept going back to over the past 50 odd years.

...and here's some latter-day, 'down home' Taj.

Taj remains a treasure. His records always sounded fantastic. I happened to have played his first two albums back to back last week, and man what great fidelity! If you can find early pressings, they are worth seeking out. I'm sure those albums are decent on CD as well.
