Are there Still RockStars* Dont say Taylor Swift

In the past, everyone tuned in to the same radio stations, watched MTV, or read popular magazines. Now, with streaming platforms, social media, and niche communities, the audience is highly fragmented. People follow their specific interests instead of the mainstream, making it harder for any one artist to become a global superstar.

Whats your greatest Rockstar ?

It is the social media thing .

Old school stars were created when popular music was the main focus of youth culture. Stars were created by people hearing the music, buying the records and attending the gigs.

Music just isn't the same driver of youth culture as it was and won't produce global stars in the way it once could unless it's accompanied by mass trending on all the online and social media.

It's a different world we live in.

I honestly think it's the other way around. People follows more than ever the big ones. They're selling out stadiums in a way our stars were never able to do it. On the other hand smaller acts have to cancel tours because there's not enough demand. I won't name the biggest star of our times as requested by you but Just what hype is generated by people like Ed Sheeran, Adele or Harry Styles.

"Rock" is a dying format. Like jazz or blues before it. So there won't be many new rock stars coming up when Springsteen or/and U2 stops touring. Pop is still a vital format though.

The “rockstar” image used to be synonymous with rebellion and breaking boundaries, but in a culture that increasingly values humility, kindness, and relatability, the traditional rockstar persona doesn’t resonate the same way.

Check Gyasi on youtube he has all the skills to be a new ziggy Rockstarcopycat.

The Struts, fronted with an Early Queen like Singer.

Palais Royale who have Keith Copy on guitar.

This 3 Bands live up to the Hype, and have the skills.

They are on a everlasting tour and release album now and then but the way to

stardom seems thin and narrow..

That's a very interesting point steffie...but I'm a bit of an old cynic.

It was once the trend for perfectly nice ordinary folks to paint themselves as a bit of a "bad-ass" .

Whereas these days, everybody pretends be all sweetness and light...but half of them would cut your throat for the price of a fancy coffee grinning smiley

The western world, today, is too woke for a real rock-star.

Maybe Oasis then but I consider them more pop/rock/indie than pure rock. They sure have the bad attitude though. But soon they will turn old too...

That's why hiphop artists make loads of money and top the charts?

Not too sure about that smiling smiley

The world is more fragmented than it used to be – also when it comes to music. There are millions that go to rock concerts every weekend. The only difference is that those artists aren't super stars anymore.

There is lots of great rock music still being made, though.

Rock star is a great title, that’s why it’s still used. But no way it should be compared to icons that created it. Not meant as an insult but just the way it is. I always say the kids should enjoy their generation.

I don't want to sound negative, but I certainly think at best, this is "country-specific". I want to see a culture that values these attributes but if anything see things moving in an opposite direction.

If you can maybe highlight where you're seeing this, that would be helpful.

Complete lack of new Rock Music is the culprit. Can't have rock stars if there really isn't contemporary rock bands. Rock music as the forefront of popular music went out about 20 years ago. Hip Hop, Pop and Country past Rock a long time ago. Times change and music tastes have changed. Unfortunately Rock just isn't as popular these days.

Re: She Who Shall Not Be Named, Toronto will have 6 shows in the next 10 days. There are planned road closures and travel restrictions such as I have never seen before, even in the days when the Stones walked among us. I’m at another show tonight, well north of the area thankfully. From the CBC…

“…The city has also announced several traffic measures near Rogers Centre. At 2 p.m. on show days, multiple street blocks around the venue will be restricted to local traffic only. That includes Bremner Boulevard between Spadina Avenue and Simcoe Street, and Blue Jays Way between Spadina Avenue and south of Front Street.

There will be designated drop-off and pickup zones near Rogers Centre, as well as traffic agents in the area.

More road closures will come into effect after showtime and additional spot road closures may be needed for crowd management, with everything set to reopen by 1 a.m., the city has said, adding that those plans will be adjusted as needed.”

I feel like this thread should be renamed "Excluding the largest Music Star in the world right now, why aren't there Rock Stars". I'm going to add to my earlier comment. Another issue is Rock fans don't even support new bands. Greta Van Fleet could have been that next big Rock Band but all you heard was Zeppelin/Plant rip off and they got a ton of hate from older rock fans. Are they a Zep/Plant rip off? Of course. But never mind that Zeppelin themselves ripped off all their influences as well. Nope, The Lemon Dong doesn't sound like Howlin Wolf's Killing Floor at all winking smiley

Taylor is a super famous pop music star. For example I would not compare her to John Lennon, who was a rockstar. Doesn’t diminish her importance to her fans, but the age of rockstars is over. Just the way history works. I think some of us resent new comers claiming they’re in the same category. In the end it’s personal taste but I wouldn’t consider Mick to be in the same category as Frank Sinatra. Also I wouldn’t think that’s important to anyone. Or?

Most people tend to hang on to the music that was modern or trendy when they were in their most formative years, say between 10-20. Of course you move on from that, more or less, but it's still the base for your popular music taste. In a way it's the same with fashion or technology - it's constantly on the move. Young people today aren't formed by rock music, some are, but not the majority.

TumblingDice76, I like your Greta Van Fleet comment. Actually I'm guilty of this going back to The Black Crowes when they were new. Hard to believe now though since I like them. Also, I thought GVF was still popular? I don't follow them myself but a friend of mine does and he thinks they have staying power. Although I'm okay with them and they're composing/playing Rock music I still wouldn't put them in the same category as "Rockstars" that was a particular time, unchartered territory. Plus it wasn't orchestrated like it would be today. That's part of the appeal for me. I like this subject. Very relevant for old fans I would think.smileys with beer

I saw the Struts open for Foo Fighters and they were great. Sure its a pure early Queen rip off, but hey its not like Queen is able to do that anymore.

My issue was, and is with many of these newer bands, is then I go back and listen to their albums and they just aren't that good. I don't think thats me being a snob or stuck in the past, but a lot of these bands just don't have the consistency of those classic ones, which was also a big part of the appeal. Sure these guys were rebellious and put on a great show, but they had the music to back it up. Any band I like nowadays I feel struggles to put out two good albums in a row. You can have a good show, but you need the content to actually back it up, at least at a certain point.

I'd say Dave Grohl is the only real rock star of that bunch. I love guys like Jack White, Radiohead and Derek Trucks, but they ain't Mick Jagger's. Sure you could argue no one is, but Grohl is as close as you can get these days. The others are successful artists but they aren't traditional "rock stars" in the way I think most think of them. MAYBE Jack White, but he ain't playing the venues Foo Fighters are.

I think if Greta Van Fleet had better music they could have done better (and honestly, they're doing fine). I didn't mind that they were a clone, I just didn't care for the fact that their music could almost be 70s AI generated. Another band I like and wish were better and more original is Dirty Honey. They put on a great classic rock show, but the songs are just so formulaic. If you don't have the music, that's where it feels too imposter.

I watch a Greta Van Fleet video, and I end with thinking their whole shtick as being a bit ‘sad’ At least with, say, the Darkness, it’s entirely tongue-in-cheek.

Being a Rock Star is as much an attitude as a measure of commercial success. You either have it or you don’t.

Currently I'd I agree Dave Grohl is probably the last true rock star and I'll even throw in that Taylor Hawkins was probably the last non front man from a band that most people knew. Only problem for me is...The Foo Fighters are the one band I wished I like more than I do. Just vanilla and bland to me. Couldn't sit through a Foo concert but I wish I could. I can't help of think of bands like Tool that prefer to be faceless. I wonder if that is another issue. Being a "Rock Star" just may not be all that important to younger musicians. May not be the case, but worth considering.

I'm a big Foo Fighters fan, but I do understand what you're saying. Dave's appeal and their music are two very different things IMO. His energy and enthusiasm is infectious. Recent cheating aside, its hard not to love the guy. On a lot of levels he seems perfect and so well liked. Now I AM a big fan of Foo Fighters music, but I feel I've always been the first to say its nothing revolutionary. They are NOT Led Zeppelin, in a lot of ways they aren't Nirvana. A lot of it is inoffensive, but I do think its solid, though I understand how to people its a bit too bland. Its been harder to defend them over the past decade because I feel their releases have been shit. Their output from 97-2011ish is incredibly solid IMO. Color And The Shape, Nothing Left To Lose, In Your Honor and Wasting Light are all excellent albums IMO, as well as the Skin And Bones acoustic live album. Since then, Dave really got on a high horse with his writing and its suffered because of it.

I think the thing with Foos is they have legit hits. My Hero, Everlong, Best Of You, Learn To Fly, All My Life, Times Like These, The Pretender, its a pretty decent list. I can understand how they aren't everyone's cup of tea, but a lot of bands these days don't even have that. As a fan, I'd say their hits are undeniable, though they are my least revisited just cause they've been overplayed. I'd much rather hear them dig deep into their catalogue, which is why I've stopped seeing them live because they are truly just a hitsfest when they have so much more than that. For years, I defended them saying there is more to them than people give them credit for, but then ironically when they became a stadium act I was like "ok, they're not THAT good." But its the right moment at the right time, and I think they got to that level more on Dave's celebrity strength than the actual quality of their music. For a modern day rock band, I think they're very good, but its not like they're even at the quality of a GNR or something, who have a far smaller catalogue but what they have is more substantial and lasting.

I have to disagree...what about Oasis. I mean I don't like them, but they clearly are to be considered rock stars.
