OT: Other bands' 'Midnight Ramblers'
Date: November 6, 2024 15:02

MR is a unique track in the Stones cannon. Keith has described it as a «blues opera».

There are parts in there that they always play, but they are also adding new parts in concert when improvising. Some of those improvised parts have become staples in the song after numerous gigs, but weren't there when they recorded the song.

I've always found MR very fascinating, and it is evident that it's a song that they love dearly themselves.

Obviously, The Stones are not alone in creating extended pieces of music that differ from their other songs.

Here are a couple examples of other bands' 'Midnight Ramblers'. The former got a MR-ish status in Quo's setlist. The latter (to my knowledge) have never been played live.

Status Quo - 4500 Times (Live)

The Who always played Magic Bus different from gig to gig.

Not an easy task as it only features three chords and a one note bass line which Entwistle hated playing.

True! But live versions included many tempo shifts and great jammin' which also allowed John to improvise a bit.

thumbs up

Magic Bus from Live at Leeds is probably one of my favourite live performances of anything.

Whenever I plug in an appropriate guitar, with just a gnats of hairy gain dialled in, I can never resist peeling off some of those licks before I play a note of anything else. grinning smiley

As far as having a song that sounds like nobody else, unique for them, I'd donate these lot:

Kashmir-Led Zep

Acquiesce-Oasis

My Generation-The Who

The Fly-U2

However none of them are open to improvisation, they are just unique for the bands respectively.

I am with you on this Spud. IMHO Magic Bus from Live at Leeds is the greatest live interpretation of any song ever.

Agreed 100%.
Or the Stones’ D&C is MR.
I’ve been saying that for ages.
There is a structural similarity between these two tunes.

The Doors - LA Woman

Everything The Doors released sounds to my ears unique to them. No one has sounded like them since.

There were so many in the 60s and FM getting popular that it is hard to remember them all. Get Ready by Rare Earth. When The Music's Over by The Doors. Goin' Home by Ten Years After. Hell, Goin' Home by the Stones (!). Of course god-awful In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida by Iron Butterfly. Pile on...

Very true/ Like them or not, they were pretty unique. My favorite Doors story is about Ray meeting Jim for the 1st time, and Jim recited the lines for Moonlight Drive.
