Holy crap, it's a good thing they left Gimme Shelter at rehearsals. That was awful.

Play With Fire is awesome! It's really bad but it's killer!

Ha ha - Ian didn't know what key Tumbling Dice was in!

These recordings are very interesting. They show the long way to go from rehearsals to the show to be played and performed.

I like the the Gimme Shelter. The keyboard riff kinda works, and Ronnie's lead mixes the 73 style lead with the 78 blistering speed.

I got the green bootleg with these rehearsals. I love the pic of Keith with his gun at the back, hilarious! grinning smiley

Really cool to hear these older songs like Prodigal Son and Play with Fire (which I used to cover myself)

Jagger sounds great

I like this version of Gimme Shelter more than the Wood/Preston era. They could never top 1972 so hearing Richards take the lead again makes so much sense to me.

I bought these cds in the 90's and I played them very often. It's raw and not supposed to be heard but it is great, right there with the Woodoo Brew and Woodoo stew and others. The Stones in 1978 were something else!!!

bittersweet memories....perhaps one of my most favorite times to live in NYC was 1978....where has the time gone?

They turned a minor into major. Interesting twist.

I don’t believe there is a minor chord in Gimme Shelter. I believe the borrowed chords give it an illusion of minor

The descending chords are C# B and A, all major chords with hammer-ons to perfect fourths. There is also an E. Attempting to use classical Western music theory doesn't really work here, as with many blues-rock tunes.

That major/minor ambiguity is fundamental to the blues and to Blues based Rock music.

An interesting remark, Rip This. Would you mind to sketch out what the magic was about?

I've always love it when they've covered Eddie Cochran .

Some the greatest Rock N Roll songs ever penned...combined with Stones' unique approach and delivery.

Good explanation. The Taylor's solo is in C#minor though.

The piano player -whom to date is unknown by the way- on this 1978 rehearsal does play the riff wrong though, making the entire version quite cringe worthy.

The A (studio version) hammer-on is different than the others, still not a real minor, but closer.

We don’t know the pianist?! Wow, I assumed it was McLagan. If it’s all major chords maybe it’s Stu! But seriously, Nicky Hopkins (not him here) always played to the chord; he leans more “major” on Gimme Shelter. At least the live versions if I recall correctly.

Taylor’s solo from what I recall is mainly a C#m pentatonic with blues bends aka a C# blues, but I do think he throws in a note or two from the C# natural minor scale for added drama.

Nope, we don't know for sure. They tried out several pianists, Ian McLagan came very late to the rehearsals and these recordings are from fairly early on. This player certainly isn't McLagan or Stu. Nico Zentgraf mentions Bernard Harvey, and also Chuck Leavell is mentioned to have joined for a day.

That was 1981, not 1978.

No, Mathijs is right about 1978. From my memories Ian coming only the two last days in Bearsville

I like the "trainwreck" of Gimme Shelter. I think this "sped up" version would have fit perfectly on the 78 tour.
