Peter Greenberg (DMZ - Boston based, late '70's Stooges like band)....Johnny Ramone for his bare-bones and nasty tones buzz-saw attack...Ron Ashton (Iggy & the Stooges)check out his fuzzed out wah-wah geetar on the first Stooges album and Funhouse....Dave Davies (the raw excellence of the early Kinks sound)....Bob Stinson of the Replacements (some wild & tasteful playing)...James Williamson (Iggy & the Stooges) his playing on Raw Power rivals Iggy for the spotlight on this "insane" masterpiece

Elliot Easton, formerly and now again with the Cars can play with anybody... did such an incredible job in Creedence Clearwater Revisted too...

I don't hear Neil Young mentioned often enough though I guess everyone recognizes he's a great player ... Jerry Garcia, same thing...

Mick Mars and John Frusciante, two incredible guitarists in one-guitar bands with huge unique sound... they make it work.

Lindsey Buckingham's great, Don Felder...

Another standout guitarist, rarely mentioned... Richie Sambora...

Someone mentioned Frank Zappa, never gets his dues...

Guess there's a bunch of them.

Is there any serious music fan who doesn't recognize how great MT is ? He's really one of those names that almost "goes without saying"...

It's like "who's the great guitarists"... you don't have to mention Johnny Winter, u don't have to mention MT... nobody's gonna knock them who's heard any amount of their songbook.

Heard someone mention John McLaughlin...

Wes Montgomery is outtasite as a great jazzman... my very fave Wes CD by a mile: "Bumpin'"... if you love eerie jazz guitar, that's your album.

Grant Green has a really cool jazz sound... Idle Moments and Green is Beautiful are fantastic CD's ...

....these guys are awesome.

Ron Ashton - stooges. fierce stuff.

Neil Michael Hagerty - royal trux, always floors me.

Billy Duffy
Clarence White
Francis Rossi
Andy McCoy

These are all great guitar players with huge difference in styles. Of course they are not overlooked, but IMO they've not achieved the recognision they deserved.

<Another standout guitarist, rarely mentioned... Richie Sambora...>

So I'm told. During the years I've tried to understand his stuff, but everytime I listen (with a clear mind...) I hear poodle heavy clichees (even in his blues), and that just doesn't do it for me. I don't think Sambora is a standout guitarist; not in the sense of creativeness, style, swing or even technique - I've heard very much of his stuff and I just don't get it smiling smiley

Yo Dandy...

Like him or not, he's THE GUITARIST for one of the greatest, most long-lived LIVE CONCERT ACTS ever...

They just started their "Nice Day" Tour, and this marks over 20 years together...

I first saw this band as a backup to the Moody Blues in the early 80's... you knew they had the talent to go to headliner even then...

So... who's making it happen ?? Jon with his "movie star looks" ?? There's musicianship there that separates them from so many "hair bands" (Ratt, Poison, etc.)...

Even today, their gigs are just drawing rave reviews... 24 songs, 2.5 hours, 4 song encores, ending with the classic sing-along "Wanted Dead or Alive"... the audience just goes NUTS for this band...

Not to mention LOTSA HOT CHICKS IN THE AUDIENCE !!

There's an "anthem" quality to their music, and anthems almost always revolve around the guitarist... Eric Clapton, great case in point.

If Richie's stuff was easy, everyone would do it and sellout every arena they play...

Edge and Joe Perry, without a doubt. And Joni Mitchell. That's right, you heard it here. And let's toss in Bonnie Raitt. She plays a mean slide and rhythm.

Can't disagree with that. I know he's got more than the other poodles, but I'm just not too impressed by his blues playing (he keep stating that he loves the blues smiling smiley )

I don't see how guitarist who have made millions of dollars can be regarded as "underrated". There's a couple of guitarists that are considered "masters" (like Hendrix, Clapton, Beck), the rest of the millionaires can't complain in my opinion. 75% of the guitarists named above are millionaires, meaning they have sold at least a million albums. Not bad for an "underrated guitarist".

Whether Sambora says he's playing "blues" or not... what Bon Jovi is really playing is "mini-anthems"...

Check out Ane Brun (Norwegian singer/songwriter). She has some mean licks (inspired by Nick Drake among others).

You misunderstand. The idea of this thread was too examine those guitarists who we personally feel are under appreciated for they're actual ability. In my opinion, wealth or record sales has nothing to do with that.

You don't have to over analyse things. It can be quite simple. For instance, you could argue that Slash is an underrated guitarist. In my opinion he isn’t. I think he gets all the credit he deserves, but you could argue that the bands excesses and debouched lifestyle have blinded some to his sheer brilliance as a guitarist. I like him as much as Clapton, but who is talked about and revered the most. That in itself could be someone’s case for Slash being underrated.

-Michael Landau (of Burning Water, Raging Honkies, etc.)
-Michael Ward (of School Of Fish, Tiny Buddy, but not really his work with the Wallflowers)
-Mike Campbell (of Tom Petty's Heartbreakers)
-Junior Brown (he plays that double-necked 6string/steel guitar combination)
-David Lindley
-Marc Ribot
-Ethan Johns (producer)

Mike Campbell is a terrific call. Not a bit of showboating and he never fails to remind you of how much you love rock'n'roll.

I can't resist mentioning Neil Young. "Underrated" perhaps only in the sense that it isn't possible to say enough about his guitar playing. Part of that is the "Jeckyll & Hyde" phenomenon...

On the one hand, being at Crazy Horse arena shows in the 1990's was like standing in the middle of a napalm attack or an avalanche. You could watch him dive into a part and then feel the sound pour down from the rafters. Huge and heavy--earthquakes, glaciers, tidal waves--all summoned by the crazed old man stalking around the stage.

And then, six months or a year later: Sitting on a stool with a Martin, doing the most delicate and melodic picking. Holding an audience at absolutely rapt attention. And often taking those same electric monsters into new and shadowy places.

Uhhhh...sorry.

Did anyone mention Bert Jansch?

Neil Rules!

How great are his best live albums ?... "Live Rust" and "Weld"...

On the topic of Neil Young, why not throw in Stephen Stills as one of the great "unheralded" guitarists ? Neil's said that his main motivationn for joining CSN&Y in the first place was so he could play guitar with Stills who he considered one of the greatest players.

You know who kinda sounds like "Neil Young on Speed"... with that constant grinding sound ? Mick Mars.
