A handful of songs at the Superbowl????
Posted by: TooTough ()

How long is the halftime at the Superbowl? Why?

This is what Bill German writes on BeggarsBanquet.com:

"February will find the Stones in places like Puerto Rico,
Mexico, and Argentina. In March, they'll head back to Las
Vegas and L.A. But their highest profile performance will
come on February 5 in Detroit. That's where the Stones will
churn out a handful of songs during halftime of the Super Bowl.
A local audience of some sixty thousand, but a worldwide TV
audience in the tens of millions. No word yet as to whether
Mick plans to flash his nipples or provoke any wardrobe
malfunctions."

A handful of songs!?

I am not sure about the worldwide TV audience. Superbowl is not very well known in Europe. Sure in USA and Canada, where they play the "world series", but not all over the world. They will play well known songs only. I am pretty sure. This is not a Stones crowd you know. It is a sports crowd.

One fifth of the earth's population usually tunes in to see the Superbowl. And it is pretty known around Europe. I see it, and many people I have spoken to will see it.

McCartney last year had exactly 13 minutes.
I would assume it's the same for every act, every year.

it might be available to one fifth of the worlds population but id doubt that many watch it, due to the time its shown at (early hours of Monday morning in Europe and breakfast time on a Monday in Asia) and the fact that it's a sport not that popular outside the US.

It would have a huge audience for sure, but 1/5th of the worlds population = 1.2 billion. Hard to attract that many people to watch a sporting contest in the early hours when they have no 'partisan' interest in it.

I think back in the mid 80's when the NFL was popular in Britain and throughout Europe, they got 10 million viewers the year that the Chicago Bears won the Superbowl. I doubt it would attract much more than a third of that now

I forget the stats but it is indeed a worldwide viewing phenomenon. They tell how many households worldwide easch year and the number is staggering. The NFL has worked hard to promote the game in Asia, Europe and Australia.

The Stones will play three to four songs and I guarantee they play at least two from ABB. They aren't doing the SuperBowl just for the money they also want to promote their album.

There will be no pre 71 song in the set,
because of that Allen Klein, right? They avoid
to give him money when they can.

To compete with Janet Jackson, maybe Mick's trousers will fall down after he has busted the button on them.

bv's right. In my beautiful and small mid-european land nobody knows, what the f...uck superbowl is, and we are not interested either. So non of the tvs broadcast the happening.

you're 'guaranteeing' it?

Pointless playing "at least two" songs from an album that no-one in the audience knows about and 99% of the TV audience doesnt care about

If they dont have the balls to play those songs in front of an audience of Stones fans, then the last thing they're going to do is play them to anyone else.

They're past the stage by that time where they need to promote the album. The main promotional aspect from this show is to promote the rest of the tour. It'll be around 3 oldies that they've played to death and which everyone knows - almost certainly Start Me Up, Brown Sugar and probably either HTW or JJF.

Interest is more widespread than most want to believe. Myself, I could give a fiddler's f**k. and haven't watched in years, but will this year. Out here in the Pacific Asian Rim where most shows fram USA, includimng the news LOL, are delayed a week, it is one of the very few events carried live. The morning of the Superbowl is almost a Holiday, with many places delaying opening their doors. Places like my island with a casino, Macau, places where legal gambling is big business, are choked with Asian High Rollers. They may not really undrestand American Footbal, but they sure grasp the odds and the bettting!

SMU has to be in there since it was a NFL league sanction intro to games for years.
After that I'd say IORR, and Satifaction.
Brown Sugar won't work, it's not PC enough.
Jumpin Jack maybe.
Honkey Tonk Women would be a wild card.
Nothing of ABB at all.
That's my bet.

Imagine the HORROR!!!

All our European friends from IORR having to sit through a torturous half of American Football just see the Boys perform. What time will it be? This is more outragous than the ticket prices of this tour. When will the Stones stop the insanity????

I can't sleep worrying about you guys.

That's fine. The Stones are playing the Superbowl halftime primarily to promote their album and tour IN THE UNITED STATES, not Europe. So whether the Superbowl is broadcast in your country (or anywhere else in the world) is basically irrelevant. You WILL be missing out on a historic performance, though.

For the setlist, my $ is on:

1. Start me up --- no brainer really given it's extensive ties ins with NFL games.

2. Rough Justice --- I think they have to play one (and one only) tune from ABB and this will be the one given the song is used in NFL promos / commercials.

3. This is the tough one to call, I think they could either do: A - IORR or B - JJF / Satisfaction (for a total of four). Given that SMU and RJ are up tempo, straight forward rockers, I think they will opt for a bit of change of pace with IORR where Mick can play around at end of song with "I like it" bit to fit the exact time they will have alloted.

So, I'm betting:

SMU
RJ
IORR

If Rain Falls Down is still on the charts,
I'd suppose they would play this,
or if not, some other ABB track,
coz they do have an album to
plug. If you could pick
the ABB track they'd
play, what would it
be?
