Review: The Rolling Stones blow the roof off B.C. Place with their first concert in Vancouver in ages

Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood know how to put on a rock ‘n’ roll show.

Shawn Conner
Jul 06, 2024

Arlen Redekop /PNG

How is it that Keith Richards is in better shape than Joe Biden?

By rights only one of them should still be standing, and it’s not the one who fell out of a coconut tree.

And yet Richards and blues brother Mick Jagger go on. And on.

I mean, all the health and wellness articles in the world can’t explain how Immortan Mick has lived to become the most dangerous senior citizen since Betty White.

But here’s the thing: at B.C. Place Stadium on Friday night, these guys rocked.

They played with the passion and ferocity of a band half their age. Which, come to think of it, is still kind of old.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Rolling Stones began with Start Me Up. And is there a more perfect way to open a rock show? The go-go randiness of Let’s Spend the Night Together followed, keeping the sexual energy of the two-hour Cialis commercial flowing.

There were many more highlights during the show, the band’s first in the city since 2006.

Jagger likened Vancouver to “the girlfriend you only text with and then when you see her you realize how much you’ve missed her.” Um, thanks?

For each concert on the current 16-city tour fans can vote on a song from a choice of four. For tonight’s treat, the last vestiges of democracy spoke and chose Street Fighting Man. The band turned in a ferocious performance.

Angry, the first of four songs off the new album Hackney Diamonds, was a reminder that Jagger and Richards can still write a hook when they put their minds to it. Or that they can hire someone who can, namely co-writer and producer Andrew Watt. And how funny is it that Mick is still complaining about girl troubles 60 years after (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction? Is this what I have to look forward to? I should be so lucky I guess.

Somewhere around the middle of the set the nearly ageless sex symbol took a breather and Richards took over. Playing a Telecaster that looked like it had been dragged down 100 miles of bad road, Johnny Depp’s role model mumble-crooned the mild Tell Me Straight (off Hackney Diamonds), Tattoo You’s NSFW rocker Little T & A and the Some Girls gem Before They Make Me Run.

As the latter ended the screens around the stage were bathed in red and the familiar opening chords to Sympathy for the Devil sent a shiver down 50,000 or so spines. Then Jagger reappeared.

This was how you put on a rock ‘n’ roll show.

A surprise for this reviewer was Midnight Rambler. The seedy ‘70s rocker had always struck me as serial killer fan-fiction. But by this point in the evening the band was so on, I mean it was a machine, that a 12-minute blues odyssey, complete with Jagger blowing harp like a train-jumping hobo, seemed like the best idea in the world.

One of the most impressive performances of the night came courtesy of Chanel Haynes. The backup vocalist blew the roof off the joint with her show-stopping solo turn on Gimme Shelter.

Richards’ and Ronnie Wood’s guitars sounded magnificent on the set-ending Jumpin’ Jack Flash, more stadium-filling and merciless than they had all night.

Along with the Jurassic Three of Jagger, Richards and Wood, the band is made up of Rolling Stones touring stalwarts bassist Darryl Jones and keyboardist Chuck Leavell along with keyboardist Matt Clifford, sax players Karl Denson and Tim Ries and backup singer Bernard Fowler. Steve Jordan has replaced original member Charlie Watts, who passed away in 2021, on drums.

During the first song of the encore, Haynes gave Jagger another run for his money. This time it was during their duet on Sounds of Heaven. Another Hackney Diamonds cut, it’s the kind of staring-into-the-abyss gospel number that could only have been written by people approaching their final countdowns.

And then how fitting that it was followed by the song that, in some ways started, and says it all, (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.

I wanted more; I loved every minute of it, even Wild Horses (a bathroom break song for the gents if ever there was one).

But that was it for the Rolling Stones Hackney Diamonds Tour at B.C. Place Stadium.

By the way, opener Ghost Hounds sounded great, at least from outside the stadium, and Jagger made sure to acknowledge the Pittsburgh band’s set.

Seeing the Stones in Vancouver was as far away from the Netherlands as I can think of.
My first Hackney Diamonds Tour concert. Couldn't wait till next year.
Now, after this fantastic concert, I feel confident I will experience more than this concert and the next in Santa Clara.
Where ever they plan to go next year, I'll be around.
What to say? They opened with enormous spotless power: Start Me Up
Not to forget LSTNT, Bitch and Angry. One would think they'd calm down a bit, but as soon as the fan vote was out, they immediately blew our minds with another powerful masterpiece: Street Fighting Man. My goodness!
As and old-timer I off course was looking forward to Hackney Diamonds songs. Well, non less than four of them were on. I thoroughly enjoyed all of them. However, Sweet Sounds of Heaven to me was the most shiny diamond!
No need to mention the other great hit songs, they were put down as one can expect from The Rolling Stones. What a great evening.
See you soon, guys!

Twas a beautiful evening, glad you made the journey and enjoyed yourself. I saw Seattle in May, just fabulous as well...we got an extra song on Friday so that's awesome, considering they played YCAGWYW, Midnight Rambler and the 11 minute Satisfaction. A lot of long songs and even a 3-Keith set, leaving you completely satisfied!

Strong vocals from Keith ProfessorWolf, he's getting increasingly forceful with each show.

Surprisingly Keith's showing no signs of tiredness or slowing down, the healthy lifestyle enabling him more energy and the crowd really applauding this gutsy version of BTMMR.

yeah this was a pretty good one

i think i like btmmr more then happy in this slot

we've really been on a roller coaster this tour with keith's set

1st he's only doing 1 song but it's little t&a and it being played pretty good

but he's not playing tms

then he's doing 2 songs but still no tms

then he's playing tms

then he's playing 3 songseye popping smiley

then the last song goes from happy to btmmr

if his set was the whole show it be one third new songs, one third deep cuts, and one third warhorses

and some people think this tour is boringwinking smiley

This might be the best set list of the tour so far. Whatever about Miss You - it's tired. Or, obviously, too long. The should put Emotional Rescue in its place ha ha.

Seeing that there's very little wiggle room in the set list, what, 2 songs that have been replaced, plus the one HD song they switch out, WWW or Mess It Up, they've honed in on it, by dismissing Miss You and putting in Midnight Rambler.

And while this tour has been going on, HOT ROCKS climbed back up in the charts. Which is typical.

Seems they've laid off hyping HD a bit: everyone should know by now.

Certainly has been a Rollercoaster ride, we are no more aware of why 1 Keith song stretched to 3 songs and then stayed there.

My guess is that Mick doesn't know what Keith ( in what shape ) will turn up at show time, ( is Keith in the mood to play or is he going to pose and mess up ) but apart from Keith starting the tour suffering from Covid he's been a rock, Mick perhaps happy to let Keith stick to 3 songs giving us 20 song shows and at 80 I'm pretty sure Mick is happy with a 20 plus minute rest while Keith does his set.

Just one thing about Keith that continues to baffle me is what is going on in his head when he takes to the stage and messes up SMU.
I find it hard to believe he can't just hold back still for 2 seconds and nail it properly.
Anyway it's a minor thing, Ronnie and Mick have been great the whole tour, no complaints from me as far as Mick is concerned, he's just incredible even though obviously slower but that's understandable.

It was a perfect SMU intro Friday night.
Is it a nerves thing, an adrenaline thing who knows… I thought Friday night the very few guitar howlers there was were Ronnie’s. I’ll have to listen back to the show but I think the solo in YCAGWYW had a howler or two, Keith shot him a look and a laugh and Mick gestured and made a face towards Ronnie during another tune walking back towards the stage from the catwalk.
The sound Friday night was pretty unforgiving at times. Typical BC Place sound lottery…

Hey Paddy, I sat in section 245 which would be in the lower bowl just before it wraps around the endzone. I thought the sound was decent there.

Maybe it was the mix that was a little unforgiving? I was in 218 and Ronnie’s guitar jumped way up in the mix a few times. It was however pretty much side stage so I’m guessing it sounded better the further back you were.

We were on the floor and thought the sound was excellent. But I've been to BC Place shows where the sound sucked so probably where your seat is, is a big contributor.
