It's not that sinister (rather beautiful and dream-like) and to me it ends on an optimistic tone, unlike GS or Morphine.

Lots of interesting answers in this thread!
I think my answer may have changed, there’s a pretty convincing argument for Sister Morphine. Love in Vain is another good one, that one feels so empty and hopeless.
Agreed that Moonlight Mile really isn’t that dark, I think the ending implies that the narrator made it home and is being swept up in a torrent of passion.
I think the darkest albums are Let It Bleed and Goat’s Head Soup. Let it Bleed just seems like it was recorded from the depth of hell at times, especially Rambler and Shelter. I do think “it’s just a kiss away” could be interpreted as a hopeful ending, but it could also be something else entirely. Live with Me and the title song are so squalid and nasty.
GHS feels like a gloomy, rainy day after a long night of heavy partying, just laying around in absolute sleaze and not wanting to come to terms with whatever ails you.
Undercover has dark subject matters, but isn’t as successful in creating the right atmosphere the whole way through.
