Since 1962, no band is worthy of 2nd place, still searching though.

A lot of US bands that came after the Stones in the 60's could be a good choice (Buffalo springfield, the Byrds/Flying Burrito's, Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix Experience, etc.). But if I had to pick one it would be the Stooges as I feel they pushed further the Stones attitude and taste for experience. And Iggy Pop onstage presence is a natural follow up to Jagger's.
Then in the 70's I guess it'd be bands such as Patti Smith group or the Clash...
But ultimately I would dig in the 90's output as there was a clear resurgence of the sixties spirit : Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Kyuss /QOTSA... And probably Primal Scream or Oasis for the british part.

But if I want a Stones feel a bit on a cheap side, I don't mind to listen to Royal Trux, Jon Spencer blues explosion, the Kills and so on...

Very interesting topic. Waiting for The Stones to go on, I've sometimes looked around and wondered about the musical preferences of the other people in the audience. Now I know a little more.

First tier: The Doors, The Birthday Party, (early) Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Tom Waits (post 1983), Joy Division, Sex Pistols, The Ramones, Bob Marley, John Lee Hooker, Howling Wolf, Velvet Underground.

Second tier: The Clash, The Jam, Pretenders, Leonard Cohen, Crime & The City Solution, Einstürzende Neubauten, Johnny Thunders/New York Dolls, PJ Harvey, Tom Petty, Chuck Berry, Blondie...

An honorable mention: The Boomtown Rats (note the quotation of "Now I've Got A Witness" beginning at 1.43):

Going by my music collection it’s Nirvana. There’s maybe 400 items in there between Vinyls, CDs, Tapes etc. I have about 200-220 different shows on CD and Cassette and a lot of official/bootleg vinyls I picked up over the years since 92.

Going by whom I’ve seen live the most, this summer Uncle Neil creeps one show ahead of the Stones with his two nights in the park.
