Next question, which are the best sounding series, the 2002 Hybrids, the 2012 DSD Remasters or the 2022 SHM Japanese reissues? Thanks!

For stereo, those 2002 ones are awesome though. I don't think I'm familiar with 2012 DSD's...is that Japanese too?

No, those were in Jewel cases released in 2012 that said DSD remastering. They were domestic meaning US.

The US DSD were released in 2002.
It's the same mastering as the 2002 SACD hybrid CD layer.
Both are stereo if they were released in stereo in the 60's.
The 2022 japanese SHM CD are only mono.

Old West German London CDs allegedly flat transferred from original master tapes by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab in the early 80s . Well, not of those West German titles (17 CDs) were transferred by MFSL but still, they are the only source of true wide stereo mixes.

Ironbelly can you please tell me which of those have the wide stereo? I would love to purchase those.

These were the first CD's that I know of that had stereo versions of Heart of Stone, Satisfaction, Get Off of My Cloud and Mother's Little Helper.
Satisfaction has Brian's acoustic and piano on one channel that are very clear.
Cloud is similar, guitar and Mick on one channel. Helper is similar, with sitar? or 12 string guitar with Mick's vocals on one channel. They sound a bit weird because the stereo separation is so wide.
My versions were on the West German Hot Rocks 1 CD which I bought as an import in 86. This was just disc 1 of the regular Hot Rocks.. Haven't listened to them in a while so just going by memory.
I still like the W German Aftermath version of Lady Jane, think it sounds more crisp than the 2002 hybrid sacd. Bought all the hybrids back in 02 when they came out.

4. Hot Rocks 1 [820 141-2]. This one is essential because it contains a couple of tracks in wide stereo unavailable elsewhere. Be careful, because it was 'secretly' remastered in the late 80s. This remaster came with premature fade ins and fade ups for some tracks. You need to look for discs from glass masters 01 and 02. The best way to recognize those is red diagonal banner 'digitally re-mastered' on the front page in the upper left corner. If this banner is not there with 99% probability you'll get a disk with 'secret remaster'. Otherwise look for Japanese [ P33L-25011 / P25L 25047 / POCD-1927]
5. More Hot Rocks 1 [820 515-2]
6. More Hot Rocks 2 [820 516-2]

These are all mono
1. The Rolling Stones UK version [820 047-2]. The early pressings from glass master 01 came with long version of track Tell Me. It ends cold but not fade out.
2. 12x5 [820 048-2]
3. Out Of Our Heads [820 049-2]

Stay away from French made Hot Rocks 1 [820 141-2] and Hot Rocks 2 [820 142-2]. These were made using ABKCO based tape transfer from 1990. French Hot Rocks 1 came w/o wide stereo mixes and both with inferior 'old ABKCO' sound.

Japanese version like 1989 series [P25L 25031] - [P25L 25050] essentially was based on the same tape transfer that was used for West German CDs (same mixes) but is mastered slightly differently (equalization profiles). Also, Japanese set has 3 unique titles No.2, Big Hits (High Tide And Green Grass) UK Version and Through The Past Darkly UK version. There were unavailable for the ROW and came from unique tape transfer and mastering. Big Hits (High Tide And Green Grass) UK Version is a bit weird, though, because it contains a few tracks in electronically reprocessed stereo.

PS. Purists will object me because those old London CDs were made from the tapes that were transferred using old equipment and definitively in inferior conditions comparing to 2002 SACDs and 2016 In Mono box. But still, it is fun to listen to those unmolested weird wide stereo mixes and BTB and BB playing on wrong speed we used to for decades .
