The Rolling Stones image in the news
Posted by: NilsHolgersson ()

Every time the media talks about the Stones' new album, you mainly see old men, 60+, in the record stores with their new record. This is of course their fan base, but the Stones marketing machine mainly shows young fans. The Stones have to be hip and stay in the Spotify top 100. It should appeal to young people who want to wear the tongue logo. But how do you do that when the news only shows old people as Stones fans every time? No one young wants to listen to the same music that their grandfather is a fan of..

Are the news reports destroying the Stones' sought-after hip image?

Stones-fans you see in the media:

Stones-fans according to the Stones-marketing team:

Young, cool, attractive. Are the news reports destroying the Stones' sought-after hip image?

does anybody really believe that drinking a certain drink, wearing certain clothes etc. makes them hip…?

Young, cool, attractive.

Watch the young girl with the €100 banknote at the Vienna midnight sale (report by Austrian TV) - [Wien.ORF.at] .

And then there's the typical 50+ age of Stones fans at the Bremen midnight sale (see the 7 photos below the Radio Bremen report) - [www.ButenUnBinnen.de] .

Most Stones fans are old and everybody already knows it. True story.

I resent that remark. I happen to be old, cool and attractive.

10% of the audience maybe – and half of them come with their parents and/or grandparents…

It all changes so quickly. Lady Gaga is probably considered old to the younger audience.

Everyone still thinks they're the same age they were when they first became fans but I must say I was a bit alarmed when I saw a bunch of old timers (probably younger than Mick) nodding off at the listening party the other day!

Hip image?

I thought you were talking about an X-ray on the hips.

I guess, just like many among their fans, also the Stones themselves have images of their hips done on a regular basis.

Well it is the old joke...

"Two Stones fans talk to each other waiting to buy HD :

- do you remember when we were young we wanted to look like Jagger?
- well... now we DO..."

Yes, when you watch an official live release, like Sweet Summer Sun, you see mostly young people partying in the audience. But in reality, mostly old people. Is the Stones marketing team ashamed of the aging core fanbase?

I think what you also need to consider is that young people don't go to the record store and buy an album in a physical format. And the few who buy Vinyl will also order it on the internet.

Of course that doesn't change the fact that the Stones fan base is more on the older side but those photos of record stores will show old people only for the reasons just mentioned.

As for the concert - in GA area you will actually find a high percentage of young people. In the expensive seats and pit not so much.

As is often well pointed out here, the Stones' fan base has not renewed itself as much as other bands (Spotify statistics, subscribers on Instagram...).

That is not my Impression. Here in Germany the stores (Media Markt, Saturn, Müller etc...) have increased their Vinyl shelfs in the last years so that they're often bigger than the CD shelfs. And I saw especially young people looking at them and buying them. But maybe they're not buying the Stones but other artists.

Obviously. You remember what happened with the 'Shine a Light' movie. The phoniness of the front rows being filled with blonde 20 somethings holding their phones made that entire concert look visually ridiculous.

And that was 17 years ago.

Perhaps the Rolling Stones PR machine should do a Hockney Diamonds Rice Krispies box prize treat commercial.

In Shine A Light the girls hold no phones because smartphones were not even invented in 2006! The first iPhone hit the market one year later.

Well just to clarify the movie came out in 2008.

If you/they/anyone wants picture of people buying music in vinyl or CD form, they will likely be of a certain, distinguished age.
