Recorded Universal Studios - Chicago February 1950
Muddy Waters first release on Chess Records June 1950

Well I wish I was a catfish
swimmin in a oh deep blue sea

She said Now come on in now Muddy
you know my husband just now left
Sure 'nough, he just now left
Sure 'nough, he just now left
Oh Lord oh well oh well, oh well

Well my mother told my father,
just before hmmmmm I was born,

Back down the road I'm goin
Sure 'nough back, sure 'nough back

There is a pic in the "Some kind of Stones connection" thread that shows Keith playing the same guitar with a capo on at the 2nd fret.

This track is decades of experience condensed in few minutes.
NO ONE but them is able to record this song the way they have done.

Muddy Water’s Rollin’ Stone from 1950 is the supreme version of all variants reaching magical heights with to-the-point badass attitude and guitar playing. The dynamic interplay between his vocals and guitar is stellar with a beautiful call’n response riff after each verse (Oh Lord / Oh Well / Oh Well He’s a); which is not really heard prominently in any other version (Stones included). He reuses the vocal melody and main riff in his Still a Fool version from 1951.

You're all going to kill me, but this is one track on the album that I haven't listened to more than twice. I love most of the album, but just not too interested in hearing this kind of thing...

Perhaps I'm crazy, because the other track on HD that I don't care for, and haven't listed to more than a couple of times is the near-unanimous favourite SSofH... Just too bombastic for my tastes.

Now ducking to avoid rotten veg projectiles...

You're not crazy . You just prefer different sides of what is a very eclectic band.

Haha! Yes, I'm just kidding really, just that I understand I appear to be the only one here who isn't blown away those last two tracks on the album.

I realize Andy pushed them to record this one and he considers it one of the better one. It representing the full circle from their original blues formation makes sense too. But, it's just not a good or catchy song at all. I find it boring and now it's the only song I skip.

Their performance on this track is phenomenal. The sparseness of so few instruments means you can really focus on the individual parts, vocals, harmonica and guitar.

For me that harmonica is unbelievable. It transports you to the place described in the lyrics. The interplay with the guitar is phenomenal.

Including this track, which wasn't necessary in terms of album length, was the true "bonus" track on HD. Brilliant.

The moment after the last verse, where Mick follows Keith's lick gives me goosebumps. Incredible!

This is what I find most interesting about the subjective nature of music fandom. This blues is easily my favorite song on the album and I would skip Angry (which I find whiny and annoying) and the one that sounds like a cheap rewrite of You Can’t Always Get What You Want!

I completely agree with both of you, very well said.

Both a bit overrated songs, in a strange setting. Like : we recorded them, we have to put them somewhere.
Luckely in the end, and not at the beginning !

Why the Stones did not record the whole lyrics ?
The 4th part is missing:
“Well I feel yes I feel,
Baby like that low-down time ain't long
I'm gonna catch the first thing smokin’,
Back, back down the road I'm goin’
Back down the road I'm goin’
Back down the road I'm goin’
Sure 'nough back, sure 'nough back”

Most likely because they wanted to end it with “…he’s gonna be a rolling stone”.

The one I enjoy most along with Angry, Mess It Up and Tell Me Straight.

I NEVER tire of listen to the boys playing the Blues.

It's like Bach. Outta this world. Muddy's version is number 1 but this is just pure pleasure listening to.

Could be! ... I was guessing that its most likely that Muddy recorded this several times, and the one they based it off ends there, but I'd have to look that up to verify if the case.

DOGS HOWL

I've been playing the new album (on CD) but usually get to whatever and turn it off for whatever reason, time to go to bed, I dunno. Or get to Tell Me Straight and start over.

But.

Times I've let it play while sitting on my front porch... Sweet Sounds Of Heaven gets over and Rollin' Stone Blues plays... my dogs, inside, start howling about a minute in. They don't howl when it goes to the A7 and the B7 part.

But that E whatever, the E minor 7 blues roll lick...

They howling.

Way back I studied sound and how it affects (effects?) people... animals.

People are animals but the science is tigers, bears, whales, etc

But this here is very interesting.

I will experiment soon with Muddy's version (I have the CD somewhere) ... and then maybe pull up whoever whatever version.

It's probably Keith's playing making my dogs howl.

I've played it loud. I've played it not so loud - same results.

Would love to see any comments regarding people on IORR (or not, thank you Google) with dogs hearing The Rolling Stones' Rollin' Stone Blues.

Try 'em with the run off grooves after A Day in the Life ....

There's a high pitched frequency there that dogs can hear ....
