Your ability to shoe horn in 6 of 12 HD tracks is impressive, though you lose points for not including WWW or SSoH. Ah...such a good album.

There's no physical release for Mess It Up, right? Just digitally released and the remix?

A promo CDR: [www.discogs.com]
(if it is genuine and not a bootleg...)

For me it's the opposite Rod!

I was (apart from Angry) rather underwhelmed during the virgin listen for the first 6 songs but then things shook up when Mess It Up started and I immediately felt the unique Stones groove.

Thanks to Charlie and Don.

Genre: Electronic

It’s why it’s my least favourite on HD - It’s just NOT The Stones !!

Point observed.

However... it is now.

Of course Jordan doesn't have that 'oof' part of the swing that Charlie had.

But.

Just like with Mick for Brian and Ronnie for Mick... it continues. It's The Rolling Stones 2023. So... at this point, enjoy it.

Charlie, basically, said so.

Maybe it's just a coincidence, but I noticed that the word 'landlord' appears in both Mess it Up and Live by the Sword. A word that is actually not used very much these days, I think.

Now those are exactly the two tracks on the album that Charlie plays on. I was toying with the idea that maybe it's a nod to him or something like that. Or is that too far-fetched?

Think your'e clutching at straws with that one.
The word Landlord is used widely in the UK to describe either someone that rents out property or is a publican (the person that owns a pub).

Fair enough grinning smiley. I can't recall the use of the word in any other Stones song, and suddenly it appears twice and on those two songs..

I wonder if they ever used inside jokes on tracks now that I mention..

About the 'landlord' - [en.Wikipedia.org] .

I know the word and the meaning. In Dutch it's called 'landheer', but it's an old-fashioned word that's only used in history books and such. That's why I thought it was remarkable. But if it's a common word in English language, it probably is just a coincidence.

I respectfully disagree with the word "landlord" not being used much these day. With the price of housing leaving many unable to purchase a home, many people are opting to rent. If you look on reddit in any real estate sub, in my experience it I hear it used frequently.

Also, IIRC Mick was known to be a renter. Even though he owned properties, he would still opt to rent. When you are one of he most famous people in the world, you can't stay in one place too long. Although, I will readily admit that what I just mentioned is hearsay.

Well, Jalfstra was looking at it from a Dutch perspective, of course. Here, in the U.K., property landlords are still very much a thing. Who can afford a mortgage in 2024??

Re: "Landlord' on Hackney Diamonds

My guess is that Mick has notebooks for each session filled with ryhmes and lines that can be used in different songs. Beggars Banquet is riddled with Biblical references, lines were shuffled across Exile etc. 95 % of Jagger lyrics are written from the "I" or "You" perspective.

This is the beginning of Emotional Rescue: "Is there nothing I can say, Nothing I can do" This is the beginning of Terrifying: "No matter what you say, No matter what you do"

In the end it is the same man writing lyrics, there will be repeats and similarities. Just variations of the same. Then occasionally you get something brilliant and unique, like Sympathy for the Devil or Mother's Little Helper, lyrics with some depth to it other than "You're awful bright, you're awful smart
I must admit you broke my heart... crossing the Rubicon" etc.

You ask if it might have been a nod to Charlie… I wondered the same about SSOH where Mick sings ‘Bless the Father, bless the Son, hear the sound of the drums as they echo through the valley and burst.’ I’ll always think of Charlie when I hear that.

Landlord = “huisbaas” in Dutch. It has nothing to do with noble persons.

The same here. What a context! After blessing the Father and the Son the little Christian theologian in me starts to expect the mentioning of the Holy Spirit somehow, but instead of that we start hearing the Drums echoing.. That's a beautiful nod to Charlie (no matter if Mick did it intentionally or not...).

A long way - and only an echo left - since the lively days of 'And the drummer, he's so shattered, trying to keep on time' and 'The drummer thinks he is dynamite, oh yeah'...
