No Satisfaction 1972-1978

With an occasional exception, Satisfaction wasn't played much in the 1970s. A one off performance in 1972, 1976 and a couple of appearances in 1978.Why the absence? The Stones play it at every show now. Any ideas why it wasnt a popular option for the stones in the 70s?

Nice find. According to setlist.fm they only played it once between August 1972 and May 1978. Played it live 6 times in 1972 and 5 times in 1978. Why? I have no idea.

Two more 14-date tours playing it every show would bring the count to 1000 (Some shows may be missing from the setlist.fm count). HTW will pass Brown Sugar to move up to #2 on the live playlist count (HTW just one behind Brown Sugar), if BS stays off the setlist.

P.S. Bv will probably move this to the setlist thread...

they did it 6 times in 1972 (https://www.setlist.fm/stats/the-rolling-stones-bd6ad22.html?year=1972) and 5 times in 1978 (https://www.setlist.fm/stats/the-rolling-stones-bd6ad22.html?year=1978) and once in 1976

I guess that the absence of Satisfaction is due to the fact that they didn't do much of their early stuff but concentrated on Beggar's Banquet onwards

I’ve read before that for a while they couldn’t find a way to play it live that they loved.

If you look at their set-lists during the 1972-1978 period, very little of their pre-1968 catalogue was performed. Post-1989, they’re a nostalgia-act; hence the return of Satisfaction, Paint it, Black, and so forth.

Back then Stones were not a warhorse band. They were pushing their new material. I think Mick said something like he would be embarassed to sing Satisfaction in his thirties. Maybe he was afraid of becoming "nostalgia act". Of course times change...

Mick said he didn't want to sing it past a certain age.

Hey, who knows why? They abandoned Paint it black for more than 20 years and now it's among of their most popular, must-have things live ...

Version wise Satisfaction peaked on th 1969 tour.Even with questionable guitar tuning and sloppy playing the Hyde Park 69 version was fantastic. I still love it but its never been as good as back then imo.

Always liked the Uptite/Satisfaction medley they did with Stevie Wonder and Wonderlove on the 1972 tour
