no offense intended – but there's a certain lack of historical perspective

I love Mick. I love The Stones. Certainly he and the rest of the band were a popular force over the last 60 years. That said, using the United States (as one of the major markets) as an example, no Stones album has sold significantly more than 6 million copies. That pales in comparison to many other artists.
What The Stones achieved was to maximize their potential in a popular music sub-genre by establishing a marketing brand and turning 20-25 years of popular songs into sustaining their position as one of the top touring acts for decades.
Jagger's stage presence and energy, the other band members' contrast of images and style, their assimilation of modern musical and fashion influences into their core sound and look, and their unparalleled ability to court corporate sponsors and the international elite without sacrificing the spirit of rebellion they built their reputation upon all combined to make them unique among their peers as well as the bands that followed in their wake.
That said, for all they have accomplished in a truly remarkable career, it is trivial in terms of changing the course of human history or altering the direction of literature, art, or philosophy. Mick is one of the greatest front men of the rock era. That's undeniable. In the grand scheme of things, that's just a drop in the bucket.
