What a nice read on the late Willy DeVille. Such an overlooked artist. Dime has a number of live stuff by him if I remember right. His music is well worth diving into. Enjoy the swim.
Loved him! I hope this new documentary sparks an interest in his music.
He covered so much ground. His early records reflected the Brill Building sound of the Ronettes and early Phil Spector.
For his third album "Le Chat Bleu" (1979), he used Edit Piaf's arranger and recorded the album in Paris. I think this one is his masterpiece.
He moved to New Orleans in 1990 and recorded some New Orleans-style R&B.
At the end of his life he was using Chicano musicians out of LA to record what he called a "Spanish-Americana" sound.
A lot of people are confused about him because his first five albums were recorded under the rock band named "Mink DeVille." Starting in 1986, he began recording under his own name, Willy DeVille.
They loved him on the European continent, but for some reason he never found a big audience in the USA or UK. Mark Knofler liked him, Knofler produced his 1976 album "Miracle."
Mink DeVille were a terrific band and Willy continued out under his own name. Last time I saw him was with his band opening for BB King in the open air in Alberschwende, Bregenzerwald July 23 2001. Great concert although it freaking poured for B's set. Torrential downpour, but BB Kings band played a longer than normal set. A memorable day for many reasons!!Cool that Willy was the opener.
