Obviously for anyone that as a fan of The Cult or likes them.

The Cult recorded their new album, UNTER THE MIDNIGHT SUN (out October 7, 2022), at the same studio they recorded their debut album at, 1984's DREAMTIME.

I doubt they thought, Hey, let's... but it's apparently turned out in a way of that.

The new material sounds incredible. The trailer, Give Me Mercy, has classic Cult elements in it, elements of DREAMTIME, yet also the now Cult.





The second single is A Cut Inside. It encompasses the hard rock aspect of what they've been for decades but captures their original sound so sweetly. A kind of gothic underground rock.

Of which they are forefathers of.

Ian had given up on the aspect of the Long Player, the LP, in whatever format, back in 2009. Since then they've done 2 EPs and two LPs, with a new one coming out next month.

It ain't dead.

It sounds like (Gothic) Rock'n'Roll growing up. Love it

They both sound fantastic! Been a huge Cult fan since Sonic Temple, but to be fair, that's when I got into them at the age of 13, with Fire Woman. I am amongst the minority I think in believing that Ceremony is actually their best album. That's the one I go back to the most, and it has, by far, had the most spins.

Sme fans crave a return to form with their favorite band. Some never get it.

Obviously it's subjective as to what that means.

But this time with The Cult... too early to tell completely but it sounds like they've hit on something that is more so in that regard than the last three LPs, which are fantastic in their own right, especially CHOICE OF WEAPON, with nods to their early sounds.

I think serious Cult fans are in for a fantastic treat.

They are here again this Saturday at the Hard Rock Casino which is great venue for concerts, but I will be out of town sadly...

Been a big fan since the Love album. Wasn't a big fan of the last 3 albums so will give this a go. Like the two songs they dropped so far so hopeful about the rest of the album.

You don't like the 1994 self titled album? That was their getting back to sounding like them (DREAMTIME).

LOVE, ELECTRIC and SONIC TEMPLE were reactions to what else was going on in their surroundings. CEREMONY was a better sounding album but wasn't different enough from SONIC TEMPLE. THE CULT was a back to form plus the muscle of being an arena rock band and.. ACHTUNG BABY.

BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL... not much on that. Rise, Breathe and Speed Of Light are fantastic. The rest if just a bit much. Or not enough.

I thought BORN INTO THIS was brilliant. It's so... cleanly dirty. And different from all previous.

I think CHOICE OF WEAPON is their best LP since LOVE, which, of course, is outstanding and possibly their best album. ELECTRIC is right there. But CHOICE OF WEAPON has a maturity to it that makes a little more sense than ELECTRIC's wildness. Where ELECTRIC was kids running wild with defiant attitude on the streets, WEAPON is those kids decades later just cruising the street with ALL attitude.

But I understand why you don't think so of their last 3 LPs. HIDDEN CITY is a bit weak, actually. Some good tunes but overall a bit flat.

There is something for everyone on all their albums. What I have missed in those last albums after «The Cult» (although I listen to them a lot, and enjoy some of the stuff on them) is good, consistent songwriting.

When that is said, some of their best stuff is on there, too. «Tiger» on Born Into This, for instance.

I was thinking of attending, but the only album I really ever liked of theirs is Love from 1985 - might go for a cheapie $59 balcony seat.
It appears that sales are terribly slow with numerous tickets available in every section, so might hold out for an even cheaper ticket when prices drop.

The Cult did a tour with STP and Bush in 2018.

The Cult gave up the stardom that they had created, with momentum, in the mid to late 1980s with jangly rocking singles and playing arenas to playing theatres with dead end singles and heavy albums.

After that they went back to being what they started out as - an artsy indie punk band only with heavy rock touches.

After not duplicating their 1989 success of SONIC TEMPLE with 1991's CEREMONY (released that month: NEVERMIND's Smells Like Teen Spirit, NEVERMIND, the RHCP album BLODD SUGAR..., METALLICA, Tin Machine 2, Hole, @#$%& Bryan Adams, Ween, GNR ILLUSIONs, Ozzie and loads of others) they fell off the music map (in as much time as it took for Nirvana to blast everything apart in September I got row 5 tickets to see The Cult in February 1992 for cheap - the day of the show).

They weren't even a hair band, they just... went away.

BADMOTORFINGER and ACHTUNG BABY followed soon after.

CEREMONY just didn't carry the weight. It sounded retro, actually, which was oddly better than the heavily processed SONIC TEMPLE. Although the first single is excellent, song wise and video wise, everything else was pointless.

Their 1994 self titled album was "a return to roots" only with muscle.

A break up and a return and new album aside between 1999 and 2001, they've been basically focused on just being artists and releasing new music since 2007 onward and performing for their serious and curiously casual fan base.

The odd thing about 2022's first leg of the UNDER THE MIDNIGHT SUN tour is the new album won't be out until they just finish the first leg of the tour. They've since added later dates but it seems a bit awkward.

Of course the Stones did that in 1969. But The Cult are not The Rolling Stones. And it's 2022, not 1969.

They're still a big band. But they're not GNR big. What I find most interesting is they continue to create new music and go out and play it. 2012's CHOICE OF WEAPON is possibly, in terms of maturity, their greatest album. Overall, their second best album, just behind the excellent and sound defining LOVE.

Where as ELECTIC is a @#$%& blast, except for the idiotic cover, and SONIC TEMPLE is the FM rock radio pinnacle, CHOICE OF WEAPON is magical in its overallness.

From what I can gather, UNDER THE MIDNIGHT SUN will be more akin to DREAMTIME and THE CULT in essence than anything else, which means... it will probably be exceptionally awesome.

For Cult fans, anyway. For anyone else, there's always AC/DC and Led Zeppelin.

Yes, it was STP!! I actually think Live and Counting Crows were also paired up that same summer!! It was Counting Crows and someone, and I think it was Live.

I saw them fairly recently with Primal Scream co-headlining. Primal played first & were outstanding. I only made it through a few songs of the Cult. Wasn't well. They sounded ok but I've never been super huge on them.

A fantastic show from The Cult in New Orleans on September 29th. Wow! In all the years I've gone to see them, 2022 is the best they've ever sounded/performed!
