Speaking of the Stones with Clapton, when was that Carnival song recorded and who plays on it?

just downloaded and listened...how the heck does this not make a Rarities collection? must be a business side issue? weird...it's positively awesome.

don't know what the "issues" might be....since they recorded it with clapton...and actually released it on rolling stones records.

i would love to see this one cleaned up a little and put on a rarities collection....it will likely happen someday.....

anyway....i have enjoyed this version of bs ever since first hearing it. love the vocals with mick and keith and the keith and clapton clashing on guitars. glad some who may not have heard it or even known about it are getting a chance to hear it now as well.

It's a bootleg which uses the Rolling Stones Records label. A fake, so to speak. "Brown Sugar" with Clapton was the B-Side, @#$%& Blues (which technically belongs to ABKCO, as it was the last song the Stones had to deliver to terminate their DECCA contract) was on Side A. Both songs were never officially released, and that's probably the reason why "Brown Sugar" was not even considered for release on Rarities.

Is this the version that was allegedly recorded on Keith's birthday in 1970? It certainly sounds like some partying was going on LOL -- love it. Another question -- was Taylor playing on this track?

BTW -- thanks for offering this one, open-g! The only copy I had is on cassette tape.

it seems that " to the carnival" have been played during rehearsals
before msg 75.
this song came out on a eric clapton lp in mid seventies.

Actually, @#$%& Blues has been officially released once. It was in a german DECCA LP-box, and it came as a single included in that box. It made it to the stores, but was later without the single. Can´t remember the name of that box, but it was released....

Now those two sides certainly belonged on Rarities!

you're right mickijaggeroo,
the box "the rest of the best
(the rolling stones story - part2)"
was official released in 84/85 by decca
with @#$%& as bonus-single, which
was a mistake by the company.
from time to time you can find it on
ebay but most without the single.

WOW !

Has that got a sound to it... kinda shows you that the STones would have been such an incredible band with EC replacing Mick Taylor on lead...

The only problem is that the "typical" Stones song is a bit "confining" for EC's style, AND will "Aries" Eric be willing to "fit in" to ANY band ???

Clapton is such a major player... one of only 3 white guys to be "enshrined" in the House of Blues smiling smiley

For 100 points, name the other two smiling smiley

Yes it is the "birthday version" and Mick Taylor is playing on it, and there is also Al Kooper (piano). Although it is doubtful if it was really recorded on Keith's birthday. Also it is unclear if it was recorded in 1969 or 1970.

18th of December, 1970 Olympic Studios.

Rolling Stones + Eric Clapton, Al Kooper and Bobby Keys.
Jimmy Millers idea to throw a joint birthdayparty for Keith and Bobby.
Glyn Johns let the tape roll during a jam, and the resulting version of BS was at one point up for discussion if it should not be officially released.

I have seen these dates at various places but noone gives his source, to me it sometimes seems people are just writing off each other...

Vilhelm, can you tell me what is your source for this information?

Well, "officially released" it wasn't. German TELDEC company (Telefunken-Decca, the German leg of DECCA) released this 4LP-box (Rest Of The Best) and as a special bonus, they included @#$%& Blues on a 7" single (white labels, B-Side was BLANK!) because they believed they had the rights to do so. But in fact they had not. DECCA was extremely upset and even filed a court injunction against their german company, forcing TELDEC to withdraw from further distribution of CS BLUES. So they had to remove the single and sell the box set without it. Technically, this CS BLUES release was nothing else than a bootleg because neither the Stones, nor ABKCO or DECCA London agreed to release it. The TELDEC release of CS BLUES was in fact taken from the original bootleg single, not from the master tapes!

In fact, german TELDEC company was quite adventurous with the release of the Rest Of The Best 4LP box. It also included the Chess 1964 outtake Tell Me Baby (How Many Times), and because they were not sure if they had the rights to it, they simply named it TELL ME (Version 2)! Again, this outtake was not taken from master tapes, but dubbed from a scratchy bootleg!

All in all, a funny story...german TELDEC tried hard to release something interesting for the fans, but in the end was accused of bootlegging by their british mother company DECCA...

wow - yeah, adventurous is the word.

Martin Elliots book "Complete Recording Sesions 1962-2002".
Martin is a credible guy who does extensive, thorough research. Nice guy too, met him in Stockholm 2003.

Are you sure this is the version with Clapton? The slide and the solo sound much more like Mick Taylor to me.

Yeah i think so, too! Comapre the -Brown Sugar- Slide with the -All down the line- slide. I think it´s the same tone & player. Anyway, great version. It really rocks more than the oficiell version. It´s harder & it´s got more drive!
