by the way why shouldn't they do a live radio broadcast of a show? Old school it would cost next to nothing and people would love it.

question: what does Mick says to Ronnie at the very beginning

anyway great version

Possibly he asked Ronnie to cut the song short at the end, that's what appears to have happened, we didn't get to see the part where Mick sings with Sasha and Bernard at the end and the weaving guitar outro is very short.

From the newspaper [www.WAZ.de] :

Rolling Stones: Police "rescue" band members from traffic jam

28.07.2022, 11:42

Gelsenkirchen. Around 50,000 fans experienced a spectacular concert in Gelsenkirchen. But why the police had to escort band members across the A2 beforehand.

The Gelsenkirchen police officer on duty must have been amazed when he picked up the phone on Wednesday evening. Because at the other end of the line was apparently the team of rock star legend Mick Jagger. Apparently, at least some of the band were stuck in a traffic jam on the Autobahn 2 on their way to the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen and were afraid they wouldn't make it to their own concert on time. The police quickly remedied the situation and escorted the Rolling Stones past the traffic jam at the Buer exit to Gelsenkirchen, where tens of thousands were already waiting for the age presidents of rock'n'roll. In fact, the Rolling Stones reached the almost sold-out stadium on time only with blue lights and delivered an inspiring show.

And they have been doing this for 60 years now. That's why the current tour is called "Sixty". Gelsenkirchen was the third last stop on the tour on Wednesday. And as a tribute to the colours of his football-mad host city, Jagger wore a close-cut satin jacket in Schalke's royal blue at 8.50 pm when the concert began.

It's colourful around the arena even beforehand. Although admission is not until 5 p.m., the first fans arrive early in the afternoon. Like Armin Günther from Hanover. This is the seventh concert of his favourite band that he is experiencing live. "I saw the Stones for the first time in Hanover in 1982. And even then they said this was their farewell tour," the tall man says and can't help laughing. Because today, 40 years later, Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood & Co are still performing. He came to the Stones through his brother Joachim, who was five years older than him, says Armin Günther. "He set me on course musically." His favourite album is Sticky Fingers from 1971: "It's simply the most versatile of them all," he says.

Gelsenkirchen - Police escort Rolling Stones across A2 motorway

28 July 2022 at 2:17pm

Gelsenkirchen. The Rolling Stones gave an acclaimed concert at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday as part of their "Sixty" European tour. However, the old rockers spent their nights in a luxury hotel in Düsseldorf. And had to find out: Even legends get stuck in traffic jams.

The Rolling Stones are on tour - in a private jet, as befits their status. But the fact that a private jet is no help when you want to get from Düsseldorf to Gelsenkirchen via the busiest motorway in the Ruhr region - and in rush-hour traffic at that - is something the musicians now found out too.

The Gelsenkirchen traffic police received a call early on Wednesday evening. The exact wording is not known, nor is there any information about who exactly was on the other end of the line. In any case, it was about the band's punctual arrival for their own show. Since the motorway was relatively crowded - due to the aforementioned rush hour - a police escort was requested. A police car quickly brought the car with the darkened windows across the motorway - but not across the hard shoulder [emergency/breakdown lane], as a police spokesperson told our editors. In Gelsenkirchen itself, things got a bit more exciting: Since there were of course numerous fans on the way to the arena in addition to the band, the patrol had to "switch on the blue light a time or two and make use of the special right of way," according to the spokesperson. Since the Buer exit leads directly to the stadium, he continued, the police asked the concert-goers in advance through various channels to use a different route if possible, for example an exit beforehand. That's why it was easy to get through.

Fortunately for the almost 50,000 fans, Mick Jagger and Co. arrived on time after about fifteen minutes of escorted driving at the Veltins Arena, where the frontman, who had just celebrated his 79th birthday in Düsseldorf, opened the 117th German concert of the rock legends with the hit "Street Fighting Man".

CONCERT

Indestructible

The Rolling Stones at Schalke - that was their 117th gig in Germany. But it was also a lesson in how to escape time, it was political, and it was a bit of mourning. Culture

It doesn't get more satisfying than this

On their European tour, the Rolling Stones made a guest appearance at the Arena auf Schalke. Even without Charlie Watts, the Brits put on a brilliant show with numerous hits. One of the many highlights of the evening was a political statement.

BY JÖRG ISRINGHAUS

GELSENKIRCHEN We miss you, Mick Jagger calls out in German to Charlie Watts, who died a year ago - over 50,000 heads in the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen. It's a beautiful, touching moment pretty much at the beginning of the show on Wednesday night, after the second song "Let's Spend the Night Together". Before that, as a prelude to the evening and in order to address the vacancy in the band right away, an image-rich tribute to the drummer could be seen on the oversized screens above and next to the stage. So Watts also seems present at this second German appearance of the Rolling Stones on their current European tour "Sixty", although Steve Jordan has taken his place on the drums - inconspicuous, but sovereign. The chemistry seems to be right, also because Jordan doesn't even try to steal the show from the three rock monuments. Which would be doomed to failure anyway.

Because the show is damn great, even at the 117th edition in Germany, as Jagger later announces. The show starts with "Street Fighting Man", and the 79-year old reels off his entire repertoire of movements from a standing start, so to speak, prancing along the catwalk into the audience, stretching his arms, heating up the audience, who are immediately swept away from the seats they bought for a lot of money. Most of them, let it be said, remain standing for the next two hours. With the Stones, the mere fact that they are (still) there is enough for a permanent standing ovation. The band takes it for granted the way Jagger shakes his gestures out of his sleeve; his body has virtually memorised them, he just has to call up the movements like we do when riding a bicycle. Well, the running step has become walking, jumping has been dispensed with, but otherwise the limbs still flap and wobble as they did when he was young.

In general, Stones concerts are like the flux compensator in "Back to the Future": for a few hours you can indulge in the illusion of cheating time and feel as if you could dance the night away to "Midnight Rambler". This is partly due to the well-honed songs, but also to the fact that Jagger, from a distance and in washed-out black and white, appears on the screen like his own juvenile revenant. In some moments, the images seem like recorded archive footage, but they are actually filmed reality. The iconic image overlays reality, a striking effect. Perhaps the Stones, and Jagger in particular, are simply out of time, beyond all fashions, so to speak, difficult to measure by normal standards. In fact, they still seem to be having fun doing what they do, enjoying the audience's encouragement in a short round of introductions. Ron Wood jumps excitedly along the catwalk, headband wearer Keith Richards smiles soulfully like a pirate who has lifted a treasure.

Richards is allowed to sing two songs in the middle section, "Slippin' Away" and "Connection", and you can see how happy he is. Jagger, meanwhile, has to recover from classics like "Honky Tonk Women", "You Can't Always Get What You Want" (fitting for the turn of the times) and the wonderfully soulful "Wild Horses"; during "Out of Time" the audience is allowed to sing along, which they manage effortlessly. Sometimes in the first part the pauses between the songs are a bit too long because Jagger has to put on a new satin glitter jacket, and at first the sound suffers from too much reverb, which the technique corrects later. Luckily, because this way Jagger is easy to understand when he calls out in German: "Nice to be back in the Pott."

In the second half of the evening, things get much rougher and rockier; in the sprawling, playful "Midnight Rambler", Jagger picks up the harmonica and engages in an exchange of blows with Richards. With "Paint It Black", the Stones put on enormous pressure to the accompaniment of an effective lighting thunderstorm, only to step it up again with "Start Me Up" - until the arena shakes. A highlight is "Gimme Shelter", which the band ends with images of shot-up houses in the Ukraine, an unmistakable political statement that is met with much applause. "Jumpin' Jack Flash", on the other hand, falls off a bit and closes the official part.

For the encore, Jagger sings "Sympathy for the Devil" in a black glitter tuxedo; probably he has even secretly made a pact, but not with the devil, but with the gods of the Blues. In front of me in the row, father and son are blissfully in each other's arms, the older one a Stones contemporary. Even a grandson can learn what it means to be a Rock'n'Roller. Maybe that's what the Stones are all about in the end - simply blocking out time and building a bridge between the generations. It all culminates in the anthem "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", roared from 50,000 throats. It doesn't get more satisfying than this.

That's because the 60 concerts are a big deal and a joy to be at, especially at a time when much of the world is falling apart/in flames/at war/et al et al, and the band are playing fantastic gigs, stuffed with fantastic songs from a wonderful epoch of popular music that is almost over and will not be experienced again, and they are nearing the end of a very long road, an end that is clearly in sight for them and for all their audiences, and of course there are the rough edges and flubs that stay-at-home perfectionists may spot and feel enraged about, but these are joyous and very special gatherings - people at a rock n roll show don't give good reviews for perfection, generally, but for feeling, for the whole impact. If you want 'perfection';, see The Eagles, I guess! Or a tribute band ... One thing I love about the Stones is that no tribute band would ever dare to play like them - and no tribute band would ever have their power, either. I reviewed Hyde park 1 for the Arts Desk, and I gave it five stars because it was a gig and an event that deserved five stars, to me it was joyous and powerful, and that was the feeling I got from the audience around me too. So no apologies from this hack.
As for petits fours and champers... If only!

What do you think of Ronnie's solo on YCAGWYW?

I think, I never have heard him play on that song like this, in that mode.

Starting at 3:50, ends at 4:48. Especially the last part from 4:24 until 4:48

If you take time to read the review you'll find it a good one. The guy has seen his share of shows before. Especially liked this part about the b/w video effect it is a worthy observation.

Thank you for your review Dean. But what do you mean with "The only bigger highlight of the excursion was getting out of Germany and landing in wonderful Stockholm".
I don't get it. Maybe because my English is not good enough to understand, but for me it sounds like you don't like Germany very much. Tell us why please.

After a well deserved vacation I am coming back to the "controversial" Gelsenkirchen concert, the third and last concert I attended. Due to the Lufthansa airline strike I had the chance to squeeze in this show, so I am happy to have made it at all. I was a little bit disapointed that we only got two "surprise songs" (which were actually fantastic!) and therefore a shortend set list. On the other hand, I have NEVER seen Keith as happy, relaxed and alert as at this concert. So much energy and happiness! Therefore it was a fun show (as always) and I am glad I went.

Finally, a last batch of pictures (with a lot of Keith).

Enjoy!
