Based on the Wembley Stadium show, I think Dave Grohl used the Tribute gig to trial several possible short-list drummers, to continue the Foo Fighters with.

Possibly, but what makes you say this? Obviously they needed to have drummers perform for the tribute...
Of course, but I think as obvious as that is, it is also obvious that if you have a bunch of drummers perform with you at a gig, not just rehearsals, you can feel out how they interact with the band, what the audience will accept, and then if and when you do plug in another drummer it feels less jarring because everyone has already seen them do it in some capacity. I think its gonna be Rufus Taylor.
As for Nirvana material, they are SUPER guarded about doing that and exploiting it. While it would work here obviously and they were all present, they might have thought it would overshadow the rest of the event, it might legit be too hard for any or all of them, or they just wanted to do something different. Might be too obvious so they'd have more fun playing with Soundgarden. I was expecting it but also they've done it before, I don't feel we were cheated or misled.

I think Rufus Taylor is the obvious choice if they choose to continue. He nailed it and if he is super loyal to his band The Darkness, they can bring them on tour as warm up!

Now that I am single I don't have to pretend to like this band anymore.

They are one band I've never really been able to get into. Really dug the debut album, and maybe 2 songs? thereafter. Grohl was a great drummer in Nirvana, and I loved his song, Marigold. But for me, I've never felt that FF's song stood out really from what else was out there. Nothing against anyone who does enjoy them - I know they have a massive following. I'm just not one of them.
