Rickenbacker guitars have a distinct jangly sound to them, I couldn’t imagine that in most of The Stones’ music.

yes but theyre known for non-jangly sounds too and several players, Johnny Marr, for one. have used them for non-jangly.

There’s a photo of Brian playing one in the inner sleeve of High Tide & Green Grass I think. Maybe a different album, I can’t remember for sure.

Great sound but I struggle with the small size of the fretboard.

I think Fender and Gibson guitars were always more easier available than Rickenbackers. Also since the Beatles were really famous for using Rickenbackers I can imagine the Stones didn't feel the need to also get them.

Brian used a 12-string Ric for Mothers Little Helper and some more.

I think that with them being endorsed by Gibson they just didn't think about other guitars. At that time they weren't yet looking for different sounds in different guitars -they had one that stayed in tune, played nice and sounded good and they stuck to it.

There’s also pictures of Keith miming on stage with a Rickenbacker; probably Top of The Pops or some such.

I like the Rickenbackher a lot: from The Beatles and The Byrds, to the sounds of The Jam and The Smiths. It’s certainly had an endearing popularity.

Didn't Tom Petty play one occasionally?

A Rickenbacker didn't sound jangly in Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's hands.

The design philosophy of these things seems to me like someone looking at a gibson thinking "how can we mess this up?"

As far a I can find it Bill used a Shaftsbury copy of a 4005 only.

He did. Both The Byrds and The Beatles were big influences for him, and both used them extensively.

Let's not forget that a Rickenbackher was Pete Townshend's choice of guitar throughout much of the 1960's. When did he switch to a Gibson? The Tommy album?

Both Brian and Keith bought a 1993 model in 1965. One or both of these was used for September 1965 sessions at RCA Studios.

Brian's was stolen during the end of year 1965 North American tour. Brian and Keith chipped in together to buy a 360/12 as a replacement. The one shown in ROCKMAN's pic up above.

This was used by Brian and also Keith, for example by Keith on Gomper, and later for slide for Monkey Man and Midnight Rambler.

Pete Townshend switched first to Fender because the Rickenbackher were too fragile and could not be repaired from one gig to the next one whereas the Fender were more easily fixed. Othewise they would have run out of "playable" guitar (actually they did at some point...)

Also tiresome how they always point out how Pete was frustrated about some minor nuisance with the guitar. Yeah right

Great thread.
Rickenbackers were hugely popular during the mid 60s.
But they were best suited to the jangly sounds ala The Byrds etc..
Great guitars though.
Probably Stones thought they wanted different sounds

Lookwise and soundwise I always like the Ricks. The intro of The Byrds Mr. T
is still one of my favs, but I coudn't get used to that narrow fretboard.
