Whatever he did to get it sound like that is pure alchemy. It beats the Alembic, IMO, for tone. Now I will have to hunt down a Dallas Tuxedo.

Here is an interesting article about a Dallas Tuxedo guitar found in the loft of John Lennon's childhood home in 1966

One of the many pleasures of the re-mastered Ya-Yas is Bill Wyman's playing and his sound. Was he playing a Mustang Bass for those shows at MSG, or was it the Armstrong? Either way it's pure r&b mud. I have tried to re-create his tone with my Mustang Bass and cannot do it.

Mustang bass, thin flatwound strings, Ampeg SVT.

Oh, and some very small hands.

Hmm, I have flatwounds on my Fender Mustang. Must be the amp.

Apologize for the bad quality pic. Could not get the book to sit right in scanner. Thought we needed some Mustang in the thread. It is such a pity that Majesty's pics have all been deleted.

Sorry for the zombie thread resurrection, but I've only just joined the forum, and the first thing I did was look for threads about Bill. I play Bill in a Stones tribute band in Australia, so it's great to be here

I recently purchased a 1966 Vox Wyman to use in my Stones tribute show ...

And, this week my reissue Framus 5/150 arrived ...

I also have a Gibson EB-3 reissue and an Ampeg Dan Armonstrong reissue that I play in the show as well ....

I'm looking forward to the new book Stones Gear arriving from Amazon once it ships later this month :-)

Cheers

Yeah, they just made them without asking for his input on design etc and there they were.

Yes, you're right. And so was Bill - the necks are ridiculously skinny, even for someone with girlie hands like Bill. For a regular sized person like me the string spacing is very awkward indeed. Mine sounds passable for something I bought purely for appearance. And it is a pretty thing up close.

I don't know if this has been posted before, but I came across it on a Rose Morris / Shaftesbury guitars web site,
[shaftesburyguitars.wordpress.com]
They confidently assert that Bill is playing a Rickenbacker copy, made by Shaftesbury, in this picture taken in 1969 at Wembley Rehearsal Studios.

Bill's Shaftesbury was used for a David Frost Show appearance. He couldn't recall owning it and it might even not have been his anyway.
