Yes, IT'S ONLY ROCK'N ROLL is a great title. Trouble is the cover was awful (the anti-thesis of rock'n'roll), and the album didn't deliver: do you really think "Time waits for noone", "If you really blah blah blah" and "Till the next goodbye" contain any grain of rock'n'roll? I think the title was just a bluff and it was meant very ironically. Mick was in a very cynical mood at the time.
Captures so much of the album's spirit and the band's state of being in a single phrase
London Calling
Beautifully hints at the danger and urgency of the period in a way that's nostalgic, apocalyptic, and fresh.
Damn The Torpedoes
Could be the subtitle for any good rock'n'roll album.
Mule Variations Bone Machine Rain Dogs Swordfishtrombone Heartattack and Vine Closing Time
In my opinion, Waits is perhaps the most accomplished and poetic lyricist in contemporary pop music. His metaphors are almost always original and compelling for both his key genres: grand weepers and grim creepers.

Yeah, that's Jockey Full of Bourbon during the title sequence of Down By Law, Jaramusch is a perfect fit for Waits. And Jockey Full Of Bourbon's a great title for a song, never mind an album. I like the stepson analogy, very apt, but he's got a lot of influences . . .
Here's a few that surprised me:
"Frank's Theme." "Little Rudy Vallee there. Interviewer: At what age? TW: From the grave. Rudy Vallee. From beyond the grave, we now bring you& the missing broadcast."
"More Than Rain." TW: "Oh, yeah, a little Edith Piaf attempt."
"Cold, Cold Ground." "That's the only real Marty Robbins-influenced number on there. Just kind of a hardening back to his earlier times; a romantic song thinking about home, and all that."
And some that didn't surprise me:
"He [Keith Richards] writes songs in some ways similar to the way I do--you kind of circle it, and you sneak up on it; it was a real joy to write with him. You can't drink with him, but you can write with him. I felt like I have known him for a long time, and he's made out of very strong stock, you know. He's like pirate stock. He loves those shadows."
"That Feel" TW: "I had this thing I used to say. This sound, I didn't know how to identify it, and I used to say, "That Keith Richards-type style thing." So instead of learning how to explain what I meant, I heard he was coming to New York, and it worked out."
A cool little movie "Smoke", with Harvey Keitel and William Hurt, uses Waits' "You're Innocent When You Dream" in its final scene. Really cool use of a great song.
A NOD IS AS GOOD AS A WINK TO A BLIND HORSE, Faces! LOVE THAT! Let It Bleed, always loved that and how can you get better than STICKY FINGERS!? YOU CAN'T! Nasty images called to mind in both cases! Other great album titles: IMAGINE, ( Lennon)LOW SPARK OF HIGH-HEELED BOYS, ( Traffic), HONKIN ON BOBO ( Aerosmith), BLESS It'S POINTED LITTLE HEAD( Airplane), STOP MAKING SENSE( Talkin Heads.
I always thought "I've Got My Own Album To Do" was clever. Straight and to the point and tongue in cheek at the same time. A Nod's as Good As A Wink To A Blind Horse always makes me laugh. Bless It's Pointed Little Head by Jefferson Airplane is great, too. Great cover with Jack Cassidy by himself, passed out drunk holding a bottle of wine at the end of an enormous empty table.
But, you all already thought of those. Let's see ...
Midnite Vultures by Beck Blood Sugar Sex Magik by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers Get Behind Me Satan by the White Stripes Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow by Funkadelic
The Wailers: "Catch A Fire" Nitty Gritty Dirt Band: "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" Stills-Young Band: "Long May You Run" "The Otis Redding Dictionary Of Soul" Bob Dylan: "World Gone Wrong" Elizabeth Cotton: "Freight Train And Other North Carolina Folk Songs And Tunes" John Coltrane: "A Love Supreme"
Beside Rum, Sodomy and The Lash by the Pogues, there is another great album called "Cop Shoot Cop". Takes a minute to get, but it's a good one. I;m glad to see more Tom Waits fans. I am a huge fan.
