ABB songs ignored by the Stones....
Posted by: salar ()

Can not believe what`s going on in Micks mind....
at last nights show at the Hollywood Bowl the playd 21 songs, from which
they just perfomed 3 new tunes...or,even worse, just 2+1.
"Oh no, not u again"
"Back of my hand " and
"Infamy" by Keith.

Do not want to start the good old "bashing the setlist" thread again,
though I do it in a kind of way....but what i want to say is:
The Stones are NOW touring for almost 3 months....as long as the new album has been published.
Starting with 3 new songs at the very beginning of the tour is ok IMO,
as the new album is almost unknown.
BUT after 3 months there is absoloutly no more reason to hide the songs from us(fans).
This is the BIGGER BANG tour...not LICKS part 2.

" We have to play new material, otherwise we would be that kind of nostalgica act" Micks words.
" I don`t mind the audience shouting for the classics..I like to play the new stuff on stage"..again Mick.
" Playing the new songs keeps us fresh" Keith.

I love the Stones....maybe more than i should.
But after all that hype about the new album.....I can`t see the point not performing the new tunes.
I am very, very deeply dissapointed about that and it makes me upset !!!

They could easily put 3-4 new songs in the first part of the show...till keith`s part..
then 1 new song by Keith and 1 new song at the small stage...and(maybe) a last one during the home straight warehorses section.
That would be about 6-7 songs..still enough songs left for covering the usual structure of the show.
by puting 1-2 obscures..1-2 classic ballades, 2-3 middleknown songs like bitch,Rocks off or All down the line. and still they could play at least about 8 warehorses.

Is it realy Mick and Chuck who are puting their heads together day by day, trying to find out the perfect setlist for evry night ?
What would the setlist look like if it would be choosen by Keith & Ronni ?
Or by Charly & Keith ?
Would it more vvary or would it be even more safe and autopilot like ?

Rough Justice should be the opening song.

i agree (even though it won't happen)...how about the first 3 "bang" songs for the first three songs of the set...that would be great and i think the Stones might light up with inspiration on those new tracks

I gotta be honest...SMU is so @#$%& played-out. I almost yawned when I heard Keith play the opening riff...something like Rough Justice, played with CONVICTION and BALLS (even faster than on the album) would really get the show kicked off right. No coasting on a warhorse...either you play it hard and fast, or else it falls flat on the crowd.

RJ is a bore - saw it in Portland back-to-back on the b-stage with it's cousin, YGMR - and found it even less interesting than the album version. If there was anything encouraging (and there really wasn't) about the Hollywood Bowl setlist - it was the exclusion of RJ for the first time.

On the other hand...the Stones opened with YGMR at the Boston '03 show, and it fell pretty flat (it took SMU to get the crowd going, ironically)...but RJ is a much better song than YGMR, so who knows?

I could see an ABB setlist looking like this (about 1/2 the songs on the album on a given night and about 1/3 ABB and 2/3 classics):

1 Jumping Jack Flash
2 Drive Too Fast
3 ONNYA or She Saw Me Coming
4 All Down the Line
5 Bitch
6 Dead Flowers
7 Let Me Down Slow
8 Back of My Hand
9 Midnight Rambler
10 Night Time
11 Slipping Away
12 Infamy or This Place Is Empty
13 Rain Fall Down or SSMC(to b stage)
14 Rough Justice(b stage)
15 Get off My Cloud (b stage)
16 It Won't Take Long or LWTCDI
17 Gimme Shelter, PIB or Honky Tonk Women
18 Sympathy for the Devil
19 Brown Sugar
20 You Can't Always Get What You Want (encore)
21 Satisfaction (encore)

I don't know what all the pessimists on this board feel.
How many songs off Steel Wheels were played in 1989/90? Just Four/Five (excl. Continental Drift as Intro): Mixed Emotions, Sad Sad Sad, Rock And A Hard Place and Can't Be Seen. In 1990 they added Almost Hear You Sigh.

During the entire(!) Voodoo Lounge Tour it were seven off the album.

During Bridges to Babylon Tour six, I think.

Now they have played Rough Justice, Oh No Not You Again, Infamy, Back Of My Hand and Rain Fall Down. That's okay for me.

You all wish songs such as Sway, Winter, Faraway Eyes etc. They're not on ABB!!!

In my opinion, the Stones provide a nice mix of new songs, older tunes and greatest hits. What's wrong with that?

Some people never get satisfaction. Would you prefer another 1978 Tour, when the entire Some Girls album was played?

Where is, for instance, It Won't Take Long? Must be a fantastic live song. Where is their
first single? We get nothing but Satisfaction and Brown Sugar instead.

But presumably, they're getting old, and You Can't Always Get What You Want is an
easy-to-play and easy-to-sing encore.

> " Playing the new songs keeps us fresh" Keith.

Might in fact be an idea.

Meise,

you're totally wrong on the B2B tour:
Flip the switch
Anybody seen my baby
Lowdown
Already over me
You don't have to mean it
Saint of me
Out of control
Might as well get juiced
Thief in the night
How can i stop

That's 10 (TEN) out of 13!!!

ThereĀ“re many here among us - who feels that lifeĀ“but a joke...

Take chanses! Why not play 10 new songs every night? Tell me why??? GO FOR IT!!!

I don't want to hear the WHOLE album, but 6-7 ABB songs would be nice...figure out a way to mesh them with their classics.

Pacing and order is so important when it comes to a setlist. Don't waste time between songs with mindless banter...keep the tension running high, just keep hitting the crowd hard, don't give them a reason or a chance to look puzzled, just make them rock out.

Terrifying got several airings too

In 1990 they added

excellent, wasnt it? Having the balls to promote your new record. Wonderful. But then a Stones audience in 1994 (and 1997) had a higher percentage of actual 'fans' in attendance

how many of them on the same night, though? usually three, occasionally four.

I dont think anyone has argued that they should play JUST ABB + a few hits.

new songs - usually 3. Greatest hits (aka warhorses) - about 10-12
The definition of 'older tunes' is a bit vague. Generally they've been songs that have been played frequently on recent tours.
>

yes we have. Loads of times. Thats part of the problem. When you experience and appreciate greatness its natural to expect such high standards to be maintained.

Would you

are you kidding? Of course we would!!! I'd personally settle for about 5 anyway (with others being rotated) and some 'fresh' older songs at the expense of some of the warhorses (which could also be rotated). Its not that outrageous, really.

I think they should play shit loads of ABB. Its really good stuff. When you dont play it, youre telling your audience youre not too happy with it. Lets get it together boys.

I do. "+ a few rarities" rather. They are the Rolling Stones, and not a party band for hire.

Sorry for being such an extremist. I'm just fed up with YCAGWYW, Satisfaction etc. Can
you imagine a live album from this tour (as it is so far)?

We don't want any more of the Stones than that they just play what they want to
play. I can hardly imagine that any of them is enthusiastic about playing Satisfaction
for the 573rd time while not having played Won't Take Long once.

It is the Licks tour all over again...... Sad sad sad.....

Hope they will change their setlist once in Europe!

Why release a new album if it is to play the same old songs..... Lets hear the new stuff instead....

No, they never played all these songs at the same concert. In Europe we didn't get Low Down, Already Over Me, Might As Well Get juiced (only as intro for the '99 No Security leg).

There's another point I want to add:

Most people attending a Stones concert are NO hardcore fans like us here. They barely know songs such as She's So Cold, Sway or Hand of Fate. They wait for the greatest hits, that's it. And the Stones know that.

My opinion is: if you dislike this tour or the setlists, stay home. Keep dreaming of your wish set lists and go ahead whining.

lets start sth. to make them play more of their great new stuff!!!!
old stuff is fantastic easy to play and makes the greatest hits fans satisfied-but not me! want songs IWTL, RJ, ONNYA, TPIE and so on....

This a very interesting point you made here Salar!!!
I would love to see what the other guys would come up with if they would make the set list.

I know Charlie said in a intervieuw during the B2B tour that he would love to play all the songs from B2B album in a show because they are new to them and that he gets bored playing the same old songs night in night out on every tour.
Keith has said that he sometimes tries to push Mick to not be so conservative with the set list.
But we all know that the set list is made up of songs that 95% of the audience is coming for so Mick does make a good set list for the majority of the crowd.

Cheers,
Wuudy

Rough Justice is excellent live so is Rain fell down. I would love to also hear Laugh, I nearly died, then there would be 5-6 good new songs on the set lists. It would be great.
